I'm in the same boat. I started my weight loss journey at over 330 lbs. I know of several people who have lost over 100 lbs and have been left with a lot of stretch marks and loose skin. I also know of people who have lost as much weight and the stretch marks and loose skin is minimal. I'm guessing genetics plays a big part.

Does it matter how fast you loose the weight? My sister is on WW and losing lots of weight. She's concerned about the same thing -- loose skin and stretch marks. If you lost weight slowly, would it give your skin time to "catch up?" I don't know how that works.

I lost over 100 lbs twice in my life and each time it was slow (3+ years), and it made no difference as to skin elasticity. I will always have loose skin in my upper arms and upper thighs that can only be removed by surgery: even had a tummy tuck and breast lift 13 years ago when I first lost the weight, and I have no children and was 19 at the time! Sorry but loose skin after a dramatic weight loss is inevitable.

"Mega loose skin"

I am in the midst of loosing a large amt of weight. Been up and down for years, and finally making the connection with both food and workout out daily. Anyway, I am worried about my stomach and under my chin not to mention my breast fat - and the excess skin that will be there. Does anyone have experience with this? I will have to get surgery but don't want to if I don't have to.
Thanks!!
Jo

Hi Knoxville,

To reply firstly to question, I have not experienced excess skin on my chin. I do experience it on my upper thigh and a tiny one on my upper arm. I must admit overall my skin has improved over years. I am so happy now that I no longer have flabby arms yuk:mad:

IMO "mega loss" is relative. For less 5 7' height loosing more than 100 pound makes excess, probably "hanging skin":eek::eek: inevitable:mad::mad:
So far I have lost 99 pound.

Now for me personally the only surgery I have had is for my breast and it had to be done. I had too much excessive skin. When I was obese/overweight I was not happy with my breast anyway:(:(:(.

This was an emotional big issue and loosing weight made it worst. That being said I was and I am not keen on tummy tuck or any other "former obese surgery" cause my skin would not heal well from scars. TBH I feel I do not need it as my skin has catched up quite well. You or someone else might think I am lucky. I do not hold any excessive hanging loose skin on my tummy. when to saw my doctor after loosing 65 pounds, He was amazed how my skin coped with the loss! I can recall that I was not lifting at the time.I would like to add that this love affair between myself and lifting the weight ;);););) has tremendously helped! I had (still do) to work very hard.

As it has been mentioned above, yes genetics help. Afro Caribbean skin has a slight advantage of coping with elasticity. But it has also got a disadvantage of not healing properly from scars.

To conclude, before opting for surgery do a lot of homework and gain knowledge of pro and cons. Tummy tuck procedure can leave big scars. I have to say so far this is putting me off:eek::eek::eek:

Make sure you choose a very good competent surgeon. This is about how you feel. The decision of opting for surgery depend on how you feel about yourself. Let's face the truth. Being overweight/obese is a result of years of bad nutrition and lack of exercise/Being active. A three month, six months weight loss campaign will not completely erase all damages! It is all about embracing a new lifestyle.

All the very best knoxville,

I heard that wheat germ oil makes scars fall off. I have a huge scar in my throat and have been meaning to try it. I was told that a lady who had open heart surgery as a child used WG oil and the scar turned black and fell off.

My vocal coach was 380# when I met him. He lost 1-2# pounds a week w just following a purely nutritious low sodium diet. When he got down to 190# he showed me his waist. He had minimal, hardly noticeable, loose skin around his belly button. He did have stretch marks but again hardly noticeable. I bet if he did more than just resistance bands and lifted weights he would put some muscle on and fill out. The loose skin was minimal. I think the trade off is worth it!

Congratulations on loosing 99# that is incredible. Well done!

While I was pregnant with my daughter, I gained a hefty 65lbs. If you look at my profile pics on here, I was a very big carrier. My stomach stretched to a size that I never thought was possible . Not only did my stomach get big, but my arms, legs, back, increased in size as well. After I had my daughter, approx 50lbs of fat remained. I had a lot of loose skin, stretch marks, you name it I had it. Slowly but surely my stomach went back to it's *almost* original state. I'm not going to lie, I still have a little loose skin on my lower abs, but my upper abs have never looked better ;). The extra fat on my legs, back, arms, GONE. They actually look pretty damn good (if I do say so myself ) now that I'm doing a lot of weight training. It was not until that I start weight training on a regular basis that my whole body started to transform. So my advice to you will be that although cardio is an important aspect of losing unwanted fat and maintaining heart health, weight training IMO is equally important (if not more!) to add muscles to your body, especially when you have lost a considerable amount of weight.

Good luck & take care :)

Natasha

I will definitely look for wheat germ oil.

To knoxville,

You can loose those 50 pounds....It does not matter if it takes longer. I would not rush!

IMO the most important element in loosing weight is to keep it off for LIFE! Maintaining the weight loss is a learning process.

Being in the position of keeping it off and/ or down for years is an empowering feeling. I wish you the very best to reach that point ;);););)

I can't speak to it as part of a weight loss journey...mine was from 2 pregnancies...but I had a full tummy tuck 2 years ago.
Best. Decision. Ever.

I don't know if you have kids or if you'd had a C-section. If so, tummy tuck surgery and recovery is almost identical. I can honestly say, post procedure, that it was not a big deal at all.
PM me if you have questions about it!
