    Nitpicky Question for Vegans

Kathryn: Thanks so much for that link. My mother feeds Iams, but I know she'll stop when she reads this stuff. My five dogs eat Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul, which is made by Diamond Pet Foods and I see that they are not on the list of manufacturers approved by PETA. Do you think that...

    New Cardio Videos

Hi, Jeanne Having done all these workouts fairly recently, I hope I can help. Step Blast is so fun, and I believe, somewhat more intense and complicated to learn than SJP. The combinations are longer and more involved, and then they are linked together at the end with some interval blasts...

    P90X Check-in

When I do the back workouts, I do the exercises from Legs and Back on a bar and those from Shoulders & Arms or Chest/Shoulders/Triceps on my Bowflex. I have been getting much more fatigued doing assisted ups/unassisted downs when I use the bar. Last night was L&B, so I steeled myself for the...

    How to please everyone....

This is intended to be humorous and nothing more. I'm quite sure it wouldn't be feasible, but since folks feel so strongly one way or the other about music here is what I was fantasizing.... Imagine that Cathe had at her disposal quality remakes or original cuts from all types of music genres...

    Dog question, please help

Hi, Amy My 8-year-old basset is just about to finish his 3-week treatment for Lyme disease. He's just about his old self. Yesterday we went for a three mile walk on a public trail and there were horses in front of us somewhere--I got a workout trying to restrain him! I'm so sorry your German...

    Intensity or Blast series

Hi, Heather Why restrict yourself to one series or the other? Why not mix and match the workouts from both series that you think you would like the most? The Pyramids are very popular for strength, KPC and SJP for cardio and circuit, IMAX2 is great for intervals, etc. So your'e a beagle...

Is the market oversaturated with Pilates and Yoga...

RE: Is the market oversaturated with Pilates and Yoga..... A-Jock: It was not my intention to imply that the scientific community gave us the currently mis-used and misunderstood term "mind-body". What I meant was that a term with scientific grounding is being falsely used by marketers of...

Is the market oversaturated with Pilates and Yoga...

RE: Is the market oversaturated with Pilates and Yoga..... It is especially distasteful to me that these trendy "workouts" are marketed primarily to women, as though hardcore, no-pain-no-gain programs would be discouraging for us. (Barbie: "Math is hard.") Cathe never insults our intelligence...

    Cathe, quick question for you

Hi, Guile, Obviously not Cathe, but I am a high school girls soccer caoch, and I feel that Cathe's cardio and circuit workouts are excellent cross-training for soccer. As far as heavy lifting, that should be done in the off season as the season's demands on your body are already great...

    What a Blast!

Cathe, Thanks for the sage advice. I will take it to heart. I've lived a long time under the mistaken impression that my feet were bionic. --Ann

    What a Blast!

Many folks recover much more quickly than I did. I walked around in denial ("it's just a stone bruise!") for five months. By the time I got treatment I had to stay off my feet, never mind no standing exercising, until I was pain-free for ten days. Then I could gradually add in activities one at...

    What a Blast!

Cathe, After being unable to do impact cardio for months due to stubborn plantar fasciitis, I finally reached the date upon which the podiatrist said I could up the ante. I reached for Step Blast, as I'd only limped through it when it first came out and got very discouraged. I'm sitting...

    PUB abs question

Try tucking your hips/pelvis just a little by squeezing your butt. It sounds like you might be letting yourself go a bit sway-backed which can compress the lower back. Engaging the glutes with that tuck should stabilize the whole area. HTH. --Ann

    O/T Summer blues?

This is a topic I'm hoping others who live on the school schedule can relate to. I work in a high school in a district that is losing students (and in Arniefornia, that means revenue)for a variety of reasons. Each of the four years I've worked there many jobs have been cut. In my case, I...

    Any advice for sciatica?

Hi, Angie: Well, at least you know there are others who feel your pain.... I've had a handful of piriformis episodes, mostly from falling while playing soccer, but the most recent one was just from a slight twist I shouldn't have made. The recoveries have taken anywhere from two weeks to...

    Any advice for sciatica?

The sciatic nerve can be pinched for at least two different reasons that I know of. One is when a spinal disc is bulging or ruptured, the other is when the piriformis muscle is inflamed. If you're doing lower back stretches but your piriformis is the culprit, you will not get relief, and...

    BS on Bosu

I wondered whether folks might see BS that way. Sorry....Seems like most workout titles turn into acronyms before the shrink wrap makes it to the garbage bin. Sometimes I have to ponder quite awhile before I figure out what is meant by a string of capital letters. I love the bosu, BTW (HA!), I...

    BS on Bosu

Just tried Basic Step for the first time yesterday on the Bosu. Since I'm still a week away from being allowed to do high impact due to my Plantar Fasciitis episode, I found it a great little blast. Added on a couple brisk dog walks and had a good cardio day. Anyone else tried this? -Ann

    Question about DOMS??

Lactic acid build-up is what causes DOMS. In endurance work there are fewer/shorter breaks, so more lactic acid build-up. In slower work with more and longer breaks, the lactic acid dissipates more as you work out, thereofre milder DOMS.

Working out after torn meniscus? (accident/not workout related!)

RE: Working out after torn meniscus? (accident/not wor... Tore my meniscus and severed my ACL 24 years ago. Had no insurance, so I couldn't even get a proper diagnosis (went around with a trick knee but still played basketball and softball never knowing when I'd get tricked) til 1985 when I...
