Question about DOMS??

Hi everyone,

Why is it that I only get DOMS after endurance weight work only?? When I do strength weight work this never happens. Is it that I am using the muscle longer during endurance training or am I not using enough weight during strength?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!

ever since i began weight training, it seems i'm stiff and sore in a different body part every day. i get doms when i'm doing endurance or strength. i guess its different for everyone. yesterday, i did strength on my legs - first time wtih increased weight load - and i'm stiff as a board today. sometimes i get stiff within hours after working out- don't know why or even if its ok. its just me, i guess. i think everyone is different

I do feel a more intense sore after endurance work than after strength work. I think it's because my body is so used to gym style heavy weight training, and because I tend to rest longer between sets when doing strength work. When doing endurance training, I barely rest and as you say, I'm using the muscle for much longer even though I'm using less weight.

I also have more DOMS from endurance type workouts than from pure strength workouts, especially if I haven't been doing endurance for a while. PH is especially nasty, while S&H is virtually DOMS-free. I'm sure the rests and between-set stretches help.

According to Muscle and Fitness folks, DOMS is not necessary to get a great workout, is usually caused more by the negative part of the repetitions, and happens more often when you are doing new workouts or a different way of working out.

On your strength workouts, if the last 2-3 reps are hard, and you couldn't do another rep in good form, then you are using the perfect amount of weight. If you could easily do 2 or 3 more reps, then either heavy up or do the extra reps.

Lactic acid build-up is what causes DOMS. In endurance work there are fewer/shorter breaks, so more lactic acid build-up. In slower work with more and longer breaks, the lactic acid dissipates more as you work out, thereofre milder DOMS.
