Running a spring Marathon (first time!)

Woot, good luck! Best advice I can give you: start slowly. Start off more slowly than you think you need to--believe me, you'll be on adrenaline and you'll want to go faster, but you'll burn out very quickly. Always better to go faster in the end :).

Give me some practical clean eating tips, please!

Cool, that's what I was worried about (leaving it out overnight with milk in it). I'm going to try this!! Thanks!

Give me some practical clean eating tips, please!

I don't suppose that would work if I substitute milk for the water? :)

Give me some practical clean eating tips, please!

Count me in as yet another person who got blah results when cooking my steel cut oats in a crock pot! They turned out all crusty and dry... Probably because I cooked it for 9-10 hours :-p. I found a crock pot recipe that essentially has you making a water bath in your crock pot: the oats and...

Which Lauren Brook DVD to start with?

I got mine on her website (ontheedgefitness.com).

Which Lauren Brook DVD to start with?

I have both Vol 1 and Vol 2 and Vol 2 is definitely more advanced than Vol 1. It's still doable, but I would start with Vol 1 first and make sure you feel comfortable with it. I now rotate between the two of them, but I think I would have been scared to start with Vol 2 first LOL. She has...

I need Help for My Sugar Addiction

I am so happy I came across this thread! I've become a full-blown sugar addict in the past few years (after growing up without a sweet tooth--I was more a savory/salty person), and now I can't seem to shake its grip. Thank you so much for the recommendations in this thread! I've been struggling...

    Body Composition Scan

Wow, now I'm intrigued--this is pretty close to where I am, and for that price, I may just take advantage! It costs me that much with my HMO to get a body fat percentage test done, and that wasn't isn't super accurate...

    Ok, I'm a believer now...

Woot, I'm famous, ha!! Very interesting discovery you've made... I never thought about it, but I don't eat the full serving of oats, either when I make this. A "normal" serving is 1 cup cooked (ok, technically that's 2 servings of whole grain, but you know what I mean--the box always gives...

    Ok, I'm a believer now...

I'm very humbled that I've inspired a new steel cut oats recipe :). And to think, it all came about because of my chocoholicism! :p

Btw, if you can't find sucanat, you can use regular brown sugar. I think the molasses flavor is more intense with sucanat, and it goes well with the chocolate, but in a pinch, brown sugar works just as well :). Also, you can substitute almond butter for peanut butter if you prefer that. I've...

Not nit-picky at all, I'm all about measurements too :). Here's how I usually make it with rolled oats (I think all the measurements would be the same with steel cut oats, except for the oats themselves): 3/8 cup rolled oats (if using steel cut, use 3 tablespoons of steel cut instead)...

    Ok, I'm a believer now...

Woohoo, so glad you liked it! Isn't it delish? :) Darn, I just got a rice cooker (that was pretty expensive already :)), but it's only got settings for white rice, brown rice, and keep warm. Not sure which setting I'd use for the steel cut oats, so I'll have to use the slow cooker for that...

    Ok, I'm a believer now...

That was my problem with it too!! I had to experiment with how much milk to add to the "paste" (LOL) before I stick it in the microwave. It took me a while to figure out just how much milk to add back: too much, and it becomes all soupy; too little and it's still a blob. I add about a tablespoon...

    Ok, I'm a believer now...

I get mine at Trader Joe's actually. They have several brands that are just plain steel cut oats: McCann's, Country Corner, and their own brand, which is a quick-cook version (I know, a bit of an oxy moron, but it takes 10 min on the stove top instead of 30 min). I use the quick-cook kind and...

Btw, here's what the zester looks like: http://us.microplane.com/microplaneclassicserieszestergrater.aspx Warning: watch your fingers when using this! These are really, really sharp.

Jonezie: I zest oranges with the microplane zester--it works really well! I've tried with regular graters, but I can never seem to get the zest to come off without pressing hard into the grater. Makes a mess. Man, all this talk of fancy oatmeal has me wanting to eat a bowl right now, rather...

    Ok, I'm a believer now...

The almond extract came about because I LOOOOOVE marzipan, so I love anything with a hint of almond :). Ok, full confession: I get a little fancy with my oatmeal :). Not only do I put in the things I mentioned above, but I also put in... drumroll, please... cocoa powder! Unsweetened cocoa...

    Ok, I'm a believer now...

For years, I've been reading about steel cut oats on this forum and didn't really get the appeal of it--every time I had made it, it would come out just ok, and I preferred the texture and taste of regular old-fashioned oats. Then last week, my friend told me to put salt in the milk when I made...
