DOMS

Just wondering. Is there ever a time when you DON'T have DOMS? Seems like with all these tough Cathe workouts DOMS are a way of life. I'm also wondering of that's normal or good for the body?

Thoughts?

Good question! When i was younger id get them but im getting older and my joints are what hurts the most so if I have a day that my muscles are sore I'm kinda happy because I know I created little tares in muscle fibers that will grow back stronger. But you brought up something I've noticed ... I'm either sore in muscle or joints and I wonder if that is still good?

Are you using a recovery drink after your workout?

I look at DOMS as a good thing. In fact, if I am working out and not getting DOMS then I know it's time to change my workout--either by increasing my weights or changing my routine. If my muscles aren't "feeling" it, then I have muscle memory going on and I am no longer making the gains I am looking for. Here is a good article that describes DOMS and why athletes crosstain--to prevent muscle memory: Delayed onset muscle soreness from OnHealth

My soreness sometimes only lasts the day of a workout and sometimes it lasts several days. Since I've started doing Cathe, it's been lasting several days! I've been changing my workouts every week though. Last week was 4DS, this week is Pure Strength and next week is the Gym Style series. And I have definitely been feeling it!

DOMS is like a badge of honor that reminds me of how hard I worked out the day before but being sore day in and day out is exhausting. I have been there many times and prefer not to feel that way TBH. In addition, intense upper body DOMS makes me like I am running a fever. It's the worst!:(

I have started doing a lot of yoga or just extending my post work out stretches if there is no time for a separate yoga work out and that has helped ease my DOMS considerably. I still get DOMS but it's not nearly as intense anymore. Just a nice "friendly" reminder of my prior day's work out!;)

Something else to remember is that just b/c you may not get DOMS doesn't mean that you didn't get a good work out!:)

You know me Toni, I crave and thrive on DOMS :D. I find it oddly satisfying if I cringe while sitting on the toilet or when I can't do up my bra because my arms hurt that much (yes, I'm a DOMS wacko). I take it as a good sign that I challenged my muscles. And I am getting results so that means I'm doing something right ;).

Its hard to love doms, I know there are people who are masochistic, I'm not. I just had a week where I could barely walk for 3 days. It cost me a day of workouts, so I know I over did it. I often have the hardest time with a brand new workout because I don't feel anything. I don't feel burning during the workout. I don't notice it at all. So, I'm working on not working as hard as is humanly possible, just doing half of the reps and then being sure to get protein afterwards.

That reminds me, I have a workout to do tonight. I'm leaning towards After Burn.

I do likee getting DOMS but like OP said how healthy can it be to have it ALL the Time. Like me I used to get it when I was younger a lot but not every day. Now I have sore joints OR Doms. And we know what it Means but still ...... is it healthy to have so often?

I spend my days reading medical records of people who are disabled. So I would say that if you have sore joints every day you might have something like arthritis or fibromyalgia.

As for DOMS, that really depends. If you are pushing yourself to the limit every day and going harder every time you do a workout, then frequent DOMS is probably normal. I don't have it every single day, but I do have it several days a week when I am really pushing myself (like lately). However, sometimes I refer to muscle soreness as DOMS when it really isn't. If I push myself hard, my muscles will burn for hours afterward. That isn't DOMS unless it still hurts the next day.

With that said, constant DOMS could be a sign of overtraining. Question--do you take any rest days or at least do recovery-type workouts? I've actually push myself too hard before and felt like crap. To prevent that, I try to take a rest day once every two weeks and I also try to incorporate at least one lower intensity cardio workout into my weekly rotation.

Here's an article on overtraining: 8 Signs You Are Overtraining | Mark's Daily Apple

Hi Everyone,

For me there is a difference between a bearable muscle soreness, referred to by wendy, as a "friendly reminder" and DOMS. I do get the friendly one frequently during the week. The real DOMS do visit :D once or twice every fortnight depending on the routine I am on.
When I change my program or when I try a lifting dvd for the first time, I always have DOMS. I no longer worry when I do not feel DOMS. As long as I feel the burn while I am working out, I am fine and a happy bunny :D.

Kind Regards,

Nathalie

I have been doing total body, light weight, and staying with it but increasing the reps. You go at your own pace.I do not get doms,or at least very little. I have gained in strength. In p90x i would get doms or Cathe.Maybe because you're going at a slower pace and heavier weights.

I wouldn't say I'm in a constant state of DOMS, but the first week of any new rotation or routine is not fun. I also have fatigue when I have to take a break from working out and then jump back into it. If I try to jump straight back into a routine with full intensity(even if it's only been a week), my body is unhappy. And when I try a new routine, I feel more DOMS.

I have also figured out that doing 5 workouts per week vs 6 workouts per week helps me with recovery and general fatigue. While I like the effects of the 5 days vs 6, some rotations really needs 6 days to be effective. I'm guessing XTrain will be one of them. I'll have to see how things go.

DOMS are such a funny thing. I haven't done HiiT DWP for at least two months because I was doing CF and TTM instead. I did it yesterday, felt great in the process. But today, wham, DOMS. Then sometimes I'll do a workout, be struggling like crazy, shaking, convinced ill have horrible DOMS and...nothing. Go figure!

I'm like you, though, new things give me DOMS. I don't hate them as long as it's the pleasant "hey, I worked out hard" kind of feeling. If its the kind of DOMS that makes you wish you could pee standing up, I could live without it!

Overall, I don't have DOMS every time I work out, and if i do and its really bad or I'm getting them a lot, I'll take a day off. I work out to feel great, so taking a day off to recover is okay with me. :)
