New Runners December 2009

We are having another dreary day here. I did HSC and about 50 kettlebell swings using my 44# bell. Yikes. I'm really starting to feel it.

Tricia ~ I admire your great positive attitude. No matter what the media says about the job market, I believe that there are jobs out there if you look hard enough. I don't think I'm on the cut list but you never know. We are an engineering consulting company and there are a couple of consultants that are not working on billable projects right now. I would think those guys would be cut first as they make way more money than I do. But still you never know which is why I am saving and have been for a while.

The one thing I love about living in the South is that you only need a wardrobe and a half. I have mostly summer clothes and a few clothes that will cover fall and winter. I'm still wearing dresses to work that I wore all spring and summer. In fact it is suppose to be in the 70's tomorrow through Tuesday and then in the 60's after that. I hope I can get my run in tomorrow it's suppose to rain.

Hope everyone has a great Saturday.

I've been up here for 6 years and STILL don't have a real winter wardrobe! I still haven't learned to layer properly! Someday . . .

LOL!! :D:D:D

When I lived in Chicago, I had a turtleneck in every single color and I would layer them with sweaters. I haven't wore a turtleneck in 20 years!

Still have them packed in a box somewhere? ;)

I look like I have no neck in turtlenecks! I have one that has a modest tutleneck. It's those monster ones that swallow me up and make me look like a linebacker!

Tricia ~ Sorry to hear about your husband but you have a great attitude and he has a lot of assets and I'm sure you will be back on track soon. Good luck to both of you during his job search.

Jane ~ I HATE turtlenecks. They have this amazing ability to make my face look fat . I can layer like a champ though and have more polarfleece than any single person should own.

I got my AOS Clinic Friday so I watched a lot of the instruction and did the Elevation workout yesterday. I learned how to do two exercises I couldn't figure out before (Turkish get-up and snatch) so I'm loving it already. In the workout, you can choose the number of rounds to do and I did 3. It felt good and I'm excited about the versatility of the workouts. I also did some yoga and some bellydance yesterday. I did yoga this morning and other than that it is a rest day. I'm going to do the Pinnacle workout tomorrow and then try to work in a couple of Cathe workouts throughout the week.

Hi ladies!

Tricia - I'm so sorry about your husband's job loss. That sucks that he had a rough trip and then they let him go. Nice timing, eh?

Jane - I do like having the seasons here. I'm usually ok with the cold until around March, then I'm ready for spring. I have way too many coats, just ask my DH. :) But dressing for the weather makes a huge difference in how you handle it.

I'm a knitter too so I really do like the cozyness of breaking out the sweaters and hot coffee and sitting down with a big pile of wooly yarn. Watching the snow. I think I would miss that 'nesting' if I lived too far south.

Hi Lisa! I LOVE T-necks. But I have a long neck so they look ok. ;)

My company (Accenture) fired Tiger Woods yesterday. I don't care really what the guy does but it's costing my company millions and millions of dollars to reverse a 6 year long advertising program. He should be ashamed of himself. When we are trying our best to be successful and retain jobs for our people, every dollar counts and this is a big waste of money that didn't have to happen.

(rant over!)

Ran 6 miles inside Friday, did a Wave workout from the FIRM Saturday. Yesterday it was warmer and I ran 9 miles outside.

I'm 42 miles from my goal of 1000 miles in 2009. As long as I don't fall, get really sick, or somehow injure myself, I will make it!

Hi Everyone!

We had such a dreary weekend but I did manage to get in a 4 mile run yesterday. I'm staying at my parent's all this week so I'm doing kettlebell workouts. I'm going to alternate between upper body and lower body.

Lisa ~ I'm glad you're enjoying the AOS Clinic dvd!

Cindi ~ I love nesting too. I just do it when it's 50 degrees! :p This is really the worse time of the year for me because it's so rainy and the time change really gets me to. Fortunately, next Tuesday the days will be getting longer again...yay!! I really miss the sunshine.

Sorry to hear that your company is losing millions because of the Tiger situation.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that you make 1000 mile goal!

Waving hello to Alisha and Tricia.

Thanks Lisa and Cindi! We're hanging in there!

Love to hear that you are so close to your 1000 mile goal, Cindi! You're giving me something to aim for next year! Of course, I 'll have to do it in a shorter period of time as I probably won't start running again until March at the earliest and be finished by the end of October, unless DH finds another job and I can join a cheap gym!

Jane - Are the days really getting longer already by next week? That didn't last long! Of course, it makes me happy because if it start lightening up, I'll be able to get out and run a little sooner as long as it's not too cold!

Did Disc 10 of STS tonight! 70% of 1 RM hurts! I'll be sore tomorrow!

Good morning ladies,

Cindi ~ Good luck getting to your goal. You're getting close! After reading about your goal the other week I thought, "I could do that!" And then I did the math and realized I'd have to average 19-20 miles per week or if I was running 3 times a week, ~7 miles per run. Since I average 2-4 miles per run... Anyway, my hat's off to you! I'd have to get way faster or I'd spend all year running and getting nothing else accomplished.

Tricia ~ How are you feeling this morning?

Jane ~ How did your kettlebell workouts go?

Alisha ~ How did the craft fair go?

I've learned a lot from the Clinic dvd. I'm not sure how long I will do the workouts but my form has improve already and I've learned new exercises and how to identify form problems. Even if it didn't have the workouts it would be worth the money.

I did CC V2 at the orchard this morning with the dogs. It was really pretty out there - mild and humid with the sun rising over the mountains in the clouds. I'm still very sore/tired from the kettlebell workouts. I'll probably wait and do a Cathe full-body workout tomorrow (probably Push-Pull) and then do Providence later in the week.

Waves hi to everyone else and anyone lurking.
Lisa

Thank you for the support ladies! I didn't have it as a goal at the beginning of the year - I think I would have been like you Lisa, done the math and decide I couldn't do it. But it just so happened that I signed up for two half marathons and a 10 mile race so the training for those two races just naturally got my mileage up to a point where I realized around August that I could hit 1000 for the year if I kept it up. And since I was tracking my progress per the plans, I happened to know how far I had run.

It is my first full year running. Last year I didn't start training regularly until May 1. I don't know how many miles I ran. This coming year - I'm training for my two races (May 1 Marathon and June 11 relay run) and then I'm cutting back so I can focus on some other things like my martial arts. I will still be running, but I plan to focus on shorter/faster/interval instead of long long mileage.

6 miles inside last night - temperatures were dropping and the wind was picking up! Cold, windy and sunny today. No workout - my DD has a Chorus concert tonight.

Today at work we are having a cookie exchange so I made a huge pan of toffee bars last night for them and I brought in two of my fudges for a fudge contest. And I brought in some of my boozy eggnog for a little afternoon treat.

There are cookies everywhere around here!

Hi Everyone,

The sun is finally out today!!! :):):):):)

Tonight is another night of swinging the bell. I will do some lower body stuff and also some back exercises with mom. Mom does not like to exercise so I'm very happy I got her on the floor to do something! Yay!! Dad was a very good counter yesterday!

Tricia ~ Yes, the days will be getting longer after the 21st, which is the shortest day of the year. December is just so dreary here.

Cindi ~ Fudge!!! Cookies!!! You are making me hungry. Enjoy the concert tonight.

Lisa ~ i just did an upper body and ab workout last night with my kettlebell. I did push presses, rows, crush curls, bicep curls, chest presses, cleans and hand to hand swings. For abs I did reverse crunches, pull over sit ups, and Russian twists. I also did some push ups.

I'm glad the AOS Clinic is working for you.

Hope everyone has a great afternoon!

Thanks for confirming that for me Jane! Woo-hoo! I always forget about winter solstice being the shortest day!

You are really kickin' those KB workouts out! Good for you! I did Rhythmic Step today, badly! It moved so fast! I still killed over 400 calories though! Also was able to get in a stability ball ab routine, which I really needed! I need to do way more abs than I do! It's my weakest area!

Hi ladies,
I did Push-Pull this morning. I was feeling pretty puny but I went through the moves and just dropped my weight a little bit. I don't know if I'm just still tired from the new kettlebell workout or if there is something else going on. I'm wrapping up the semester at school and grading tests and calculating final grades - yippee. After Thursday its winter break - yay!

Hi,

I'm working with FCP and editing video. I'm doing the holiday cooking. Today its lemon raisin muffins for my Mom's work.

I've been just one accident after another. I got hit in the nose with a hanger. I drank some broth that I thought was cold but was super hot and burned my throat so bad I was reduced to ice chips for hours (ouchie.) and I ate a peanut that had mold in it (couldn't see it) and it was too late by the time I realized what was wrong and I've been really sick to my stomach all night. Ugh. Last Saturday I worked for several hours in the cold and my arms hurt so bad for days because it was so cold I didn't know I hurt myself.
I can't run because we have a mountain lion in the neighborhood.

This week's rotation:
Sun/Mon Off
Tuesday: CW
Wednesday: Yoga Today, 3 miles with Leslie
Thursday: Imax 2
Friday: Yoga Basics with Kathy Smith, 3 miles with Leslie
Saturday: Powermax

Eats have been miserable. Lots of ice cream, truffle tart, and tings. Just not great. I wake up real hungry and just find myself face down in a bag of tings or pint of ice cream. But, I am doing ok on calories. I just need to improve my resolve. I did switch to Breyer's from Haagen Daz 5 because the sugar content and calories are lower. And, I'm taking my vitamins on time (lots of them for my Pcos.)

I'm just so sick and tired of being obese (5'2" and 180) that I'm ready to do the work of getting the next 50 pounds off. This whole year has been one injury after another. I need to shift my focus from just getting by to one of making progress. I'm starting my New Year's Resolution early. I only have one more challenge. Harry Potter club Christmas party on Saturday. I'm making a gluten free pudding, cake to share and also a teriyaki chicken with broccoli slaw main dish.

Today my planned eats are:
Breakfast: 1 c. Millet, 1/2 c. chex, 1/2 c. coconut milk,
Lunch: Vegetable soup
Dinner: Steak and eggs

Hi Lisa! Be careful that you don't wear yourself out into a cold or flu! Get some rest!

Alisha - You poor thing! I tend to eat and drink things when they're too hot! I don't like my food cold or even lukewarm! I couldn't imagine burning myself all the way down my throat though! OMG!

Good heavens, a mountain lion! Yes, indoor workouts sound like a smart idea right now!

You'll get yourself back on track with the food! This time of year is just horrible for will power! I've been cheating too at work. Clients have been bringing or sending food gifts all week! I haven't been too bad, but I've been nibbling here and there! At least I haven't gained any weight back! Not yet, anyway!

Only one more week to Christmas and it'll all be over! We can kick it back into high gear at the first of 2010!

I have actually been keeping up with my STS rotation and cardio. Tomorrow night will be the first missed workout due to our office/client Christmas party. AT least I'm only missing a cardio night! I don't like missing my STS nights as it's just so difficult to work it back in!

I'd like to send out helloes and Merry Christmases to all of our missing cohorts! I hope they are all having a wonderful holiday season!

Good Morning!

I forgot to post yesterday. I was planning to workout yesterday but was too tired. I did help Mom with her back exercises though. I'm so proud that she is doing these exercises. She is not a workout person but she does need to get her back stronger.

I'm doing another kettlebell workout tonight.

Tricia ~ I'm staying at my parent's all this week (I do so every 3rd week) so I just go there directly from work. Right now it's easier just to bring the kettlebell and do workouts in their house. When the time changes, I'll move outdoors and will run around their neighborhood in addition to the kbells.

Lisa ~ Take care of yourself. Hope you are feeling better today.

Alisha ~ {{{Hugs}}}. This has been a difficult year for me too but you just have to keep trying and moving forward. Don't get lost in what should have been. 2010 is going to be an excellent year for all of us. Enjoy the holiday season and then get out there in 2010 and hit it hard.

Yikes....Mountain Lions!! Even I would stay inside and I love LIONS!!!

Waves hello to Cindi!!!

Hope everyone has a great day!!

Hi ladies!

I hope you are having a better day, Alisha!

Ran 4 yesterday - just short on time. Then I made a huge pot of Chana Masala for work today. We are having a potluck and I'm the token vegetarian. Chana Masala is just chickpeas cooked with tomatoes, onions, and a bunch of spices.

Hi everyone,

Alisha ~ Here's hoping that everything heals well and your accident streak has passed. I'm sorry to hear you are struggling with your eating but at the same time you help me feel not so alone! I read your meal plans and think, "Wow I could never be so disciplined!" I tend to eat like I workout - okay, what do I feel like doing/eating today?"

I do have to say that limiting what I have in the house really helps. I eat the same thing for breakfast, lunch, dinner, snacks for a week or two and then change it up. If I have something new and interesting, I find myself wanting to eat lunch at 10 am just for fun. Of course, there is no one in the house but me so that really helps.

Jane ~ I'm also glad to know that I am not the only one who travels with a kettlebell or two! My 15# will be travelling all over with me for Christmas - to WV to see the family then down to Hatteras to Andy and the girls and, of course, Chip.

Tricia ~ How are you liking STS so far? Are you seeing improvements in strength or changes in hunger or anything like that yet?

Cindi ~ Chana masala - YUMMY!! I used to live in Morgantown, WV with this really great Indian restaurant. I miss great Indian food. Would you mind sharing your recipe? Enjoy the party.

This morning I just did 20 minutes of 10 Minute Solutions Pilates. The girl in the dvd kind of annoys me and spends too much time between the poses and not enough in them but I just needed some gentle stretching. I walking the dogs tonight and think I'm going to do another easy workout or cardio tomorrow.

Happy holidays ladies and good wishes to all of our lurkers/missing members.
Lisa

Hi everybody!

I did yoga today nerves of steel yesterday and I just did Imax 2 intervals 1-8. After that I just pooped out.

I"m all wore out from the cooking. I made a quiche and a set of black berry muffins for my Mom's work this morning. They had their big Holiday spread. I did go. I only had one muffin and plenty of eggs and lean ham so I'm happy about the whole situation. I also got some videoing done this afternoon. So, yippee!

Hi everyone! Final Christmas concert last night for the kids. YAY! Running today.

The Chana Masala was completely gone yesterday. No leftovers so I think that's a good sign. :) Here's the recipe Lisa

- Saute in some Olive Oil - 1 small diced onion, 1 clove garlic until onion starts to brown.
- add in spices: 1 T gr. coriander, 2 t ground cumin, 1/2 t ground cayenne, 1 t gr tumeric. Saute for about 30 seconds
- add in 1 can diced tomotoes with juice and 2 cans garbanzo beans, 1 cup vegetable broth
- simmer to reduce liquid (about 10 minutes) - I smash up some of the beans too to thicken it a bit
- add juice from 1/2 lemon, 1/4 c chopped cilantro, 1 T garam masala, 2 t grated ginger
- stir and salt to taste (add seasonings to your liking)

You can really play with this to make it how you like it - the basic parts are the chickpeas, onions, tomatoes. You can mix and match all the spices and other ingredients how you like.

I didn't do this for work - but when I make it home, I add a head of steamed cauliflower chopped up. I think that makes it more of a complete 1-dish meal.

You can serve with rice or naan. I usually serve with whole grain naan or pita.

It's better the next day so make it the night before if you can!
