IBS

Does anyone else suffer ALOT from IBS? I am sick regularly, get stomach cramps, and all that stuff. The bloating isn't pleasant eiether. I am on tonnes of laxatives, and I am on anti sicness tablets, which seem to work. As long as I don't eat: Anything with a high fat content, red meat, alcohol

I know that protein is important when I exercise so much. Does anyone have any suggestions? Currently I can eat dry chicken, tuna and eggs. Which is what I eat the most. I worry that because I exercise 90 minutes every day of the week, three of which being strength workouts, that I'm not able to properly give my body the protein it needs. Does anybody know how this would affect my body? And has anyone got any suggestions?

Ooh, and if anyone suffers from it too, any idea to stop the vomiting? It's kinda annoying :S

Thank you :)

I'm so sorry you are suffering. While I've never been diagnosed with IBS, I've had extended periods of IBS-like symptoms, and it's so painful and tiring. My heart goes out to you. <3

If the protein you're eating now is working for your gut (though I'd wonder considering how sick you are currently), then I'd say don't worry. I've experimented with different protein levels (60g a day vs 130g a day).

* I've experienced excellent strength gains on 52-60g a day.
* I've not experienced any additional gains on amounts above that. (70 - 100g)
* At 130g a day, DH thinks I had symptoms of a kidney stone. Not sure if my protein intake was related, if I was dehydrated, or if it was a coincidence. We'll never know for sure, but if 50+g gets me to where I need to be, good enough.

Forgive me is this is dopey question, but are you seeing a specialist for your IBS? Have you read up on IBS-specific diets? You sound like you're really having a tough time! ((hug))

Oh dear - sorry you are having such a tough time. I never hurl, so I am grateful for that. I found that the best thing for me was uber clean eating. I also cut out high fats, most dairy and drink lots of water. Can you drink a protein shake? Those are ok for me as long as I don't use a mixer to make it. Eggs sometimes get me good. Why are you on laxatives? Do you just have the constipation part? And are these doctor prescribed or not? How much water and fiber do you consume? I would definitely see a specialist if you haven't already. Your body cannot go on like this, and have you working it out on top of it. All the best.

My mother has that. She does best with a large lunch of vegetables and some broth. Its about two cups worth. And she eats at least one piece of fruit per day usually an orange or a peach. She takes lots of antacids a prescription antacid (zantac 150) and she takes gas x for the bloating.

It's not a silly question :) I have been seeing a stomach specialist, but not an IBS specialist. THey seem to believe that just modifying your diet is the best you can do. Unfortunately, they're not very sympathetic.

Thank you for your sympathy :) The nature of IBS is that it's not got a detailed cause, so alot of people dismiss the symptoms. It does get frustrating at times! Although I'm not happy that you seem to suffer too, it's nice to hear from someone who knows what I'm talking about. So thank you :)

It's interesting to hear that you haven't noticed much difference in muscle gain with your differing protein intake. I have to say, for me, it's a relief. Because trying to find protein that my stomach accepts is not easy.. so I think I will stick with the limiting amount that APPEARS to be helping :) No one has ever advised me a specific amount before, so I will go for a 60g average for a bit, and see how it goes. THank you again :)

I was never sick until about 6 months ago. I had the flu, and then afterwards the symptom just stuck. Which wasn't all that fun really! The laxatives are doctor prescribed.. because before I began being sick, constipation and stomach cramps were the main concern (plus the bloating).. but unfortunately the sickness has overtaken it now! I eat ALOT of fibre.. the doctor advised me on this... but it doens't seem to have helped. I do through good weeks and bad weeks.. but the sickness just persists through both. I haven't tried a protein shake actually. I don't know much about them to be honest  It might be worth while. When do you have them? And where do you get them from  (I really don't know anything about them.)

THank you :)

You can get your protein shakes at places like GNC, The Vitamin Shoppe, and other nutrition stores, plus online. Here is the one I drink. I drink it after a weight workout and depending on my food for the day, sometimes before. And it also makes a good meal replacement when mixed with berries when I am in a hurry. I try not to drink too many a day (and really, I have found that 3 is too many for me) b/c I have to drink so much water or my body feels strange. And I love to blend them in the mixer with ice, and make a yummy shake but that extra air will make me bloated. Here is the link: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/opt/natwhey.html I have only tried vanilla. A lot of stores will sell individual packets of protein powder too. This is the best tasting one I have found, that doesn't have a lot of added junk ingredients though. And you may want to look for one that has whey protein isolates and not concentrates, if you think you may be lactose intolerant.

Have you been tested for other things? Sometimes, problems with the ovaries can present like this. BUT, I have also heard of people having something like the flu (there was even a thread on here a while back) and the stomach thing continuing to last, like there is some bacteria in there. Have you tried pre/pro-biotics? I hope you find something. It is so unpleasant, I know. Generally, I have the opposite problem as of late, but eating ground flax helps me keep things moving. And that Miralax is now over the counter, and it is a good one that is gentle. There is also a tea called Get it Going - http://www.vitacost.com/The-Republic-of-Tea-Get-it-Going-Herb-Tea-For-Constipation-No-2 I try to rely more on natural ingredients, when possible. Peppermint tea (find a good brand that has potent leaves) as well as peppermint pills (if you try them, get enteric coated pills and try to find pills with added herbs like ginger and fennel (I take these: http://www.vitacost.com/The-Republic-of-Tea-Get-it-Going-Herb-Tea-For-Constipation-No-2) help me tremendously with gas and bloating, and also with going when I need to.
