Etta James--unplugged & unhinged

I had the pleasure of sitting in the second row at her performance at a jazz festival. For a 71 she's pretty spunky and has quite a bit of talent left in her. I find it amusing that CNN has felt compelled to generate hype over comments. I think she likes to stir the pot a little and it sounds like she and the crowd were in agreement about Beyonce ;)

Knowing the crowd at blues concerts, I suspect they'd have agreed w/her if she said the grass was blue & the sky was green. :D

Anyway, the comments about how Obama is "not her president" strike me as very odd. Is she not a US citizen or something?

Oh, & for the record, while I know next to nothing about Beyonce & neither love her or hate her, I found her rendition of James' song beautiful & quite moving. I cannot for the life of me figure out why Etta would have such a nasty reaction to it.

Heck, even I'm in agreement! I think one of the lowest points I've seen in the music industry is when they had Beyonce cover everyone's nominated songs at the Grammy's a few years ago. Gag me... I know I'm in the minority, but I can't stand her voice.

Really? Jeez, I'm no expert, but she seems to have a nice voice.

They also mentioned in this news story that Beyonce & Etta seemed pretty friendly a year ago when Beyonce played James in a movie (the name escapes me). They had a photo shoot together & they looked awful cozy.

And what I really don't get is, why she'd be so offended w/her song being sung at the pres inauguration? Seems like it'd be an honor.......I wonder if there's some personal beef w/Obama, or if she's just kinda strange?

I guess Beyonce broke the Diva code or something. I think Etta's nuts, but Beyonce probably should have seen it coming. I really can't stand Diva behavior! And leave the president and his big ears out of it!

Laura - She can hit all the notes in all the right places, I just don't like the actual sound of her voice at all. I'm not saying she's a bad singer, she's obviously a good singer. I just don't like personally like her voice and she butchered some songs that I will not forgive her for! ;)

Honestly? This is much more interesting news to me than the woman who had octuplets from in vitro yadda yadda yadda.........;)

Yeah, what was up w/that comment about the ears anyway? Is the size of one's ears directly related to her/his ability to preside? I have to admit that was one of the funniest things I've heard in a while.........:D

There is always going to be a news worthy story, but we're allowed to discuss the not-so news worthy ones if we want. ;)

LOL at the ears comment too. Etta is obviously a feisty woman!

Don't worry, I wasn't flaming ya!!! Just excusing our tabloid gossip!

I think it sounds like sour grapes on her part, honestly.
And in fairness, I guess it would kind of sting if some new and popular singer was invited to sing YOUR song at such a historic inauguration...when you were available and perfectly capable of singing it yourself.

I mean, they invited Aretha Franklin (who has had better performances, IMO). But why not ask Etta herself to sing the song? Beyonce did a beautiful job, don't get me wrong.
Just seems a little weird.

I actually thought she was dead, so I figured that's why Beyonce was singing. LOL!

LOL, I too thought she was dead. Maybe Obama did too :D

I understand Etta being chocked as it is in fact her song and she should have been the one to sing it.

On the other hand, I think Obama was reaching towards a younger generation who were probably more influential in voting him in therefore Beonce was his choice.

OMG! I am such a dingbat, I didn't even think of that!

WTH? A duo could've been pretty cool............and would've appealed to young & old!

Right on!

Etta James should have asked to sing it - it would have been very easy to check whether she was still among the living, and Obama's people could have cleared that up in like 2 seconds. It would have been cool to have had Aretha & Etta James both involved in the Inauguration Day....oh, well! It would have been a nice introduction to the younger generation of Etta James. Maybe Mr. O could invite Etta to the White House for a concert in the East Room.
