Your thoughts on cheese

Cathlete
So, what do you all think about cheese? Do you love it and can't live without it? Is it healthy? Do you avoid it like the plague and think it's a very, very bad thing to eat?

Why?

I personally love the stuff and eat some every day. I just really enjoy it with my dinner - on top of just about whatever I decide to fix. I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian. I've been thinking that I need to cut back on my fat intake, which of course would mean cutting back (or out) on cheese, and probably other dairy. But oh man, I love dairy products. What a decision!

I love cheese. I used to sell cheese and I ate tons of it. I could literally eat 1/2 pound of Havarti in one sitting. Of course this was all before I was working out.

I consider it healthy in moderation. I don't buy blocks of cheese or spreadable cheese anymore. The only cheese I will buy is the shreaded cheese to sprinkle on a homemade pizza or the individual cheese sticks that I bring to lunch.

I do have a little bit each day but it is usually the cheese stick. Moderation. Moderation. Moderation.

Oh Man,i LOVE cheese I eat it everyday! I do buy the low-fat kind though!

My favorite is sharp chedder!:9

I love cheese but I weigh my portions. I tend to go for the really flavorful/pungent kinds because you don't need as much to get the flavor (bleu, feta, super sharp cheddar, goat, parmegiano reggiano, etc.)

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

I LOOOOOVE cheese! I'll never give it up. I love good 'ole American cheese and Monterey Jack. Yum.

My sister is a vegan and won't go near the stuff. Says it makes her gassy and bloated. She says she feels so much lighter without eating dairy products. It's true--dairy can make you feel heavy and sit in your gut. I don't eat a lot of cheese, but I do enjoy it when I do consume it. It's oh so very yummy in my tummy...;)

Sorry Allison, "American" cheese is not cheese  ;-)
I do enjoy cheese and I don't have any issues with dairy. I do my very best to enjoy it in moderation. I don't buy into the "dairy is evil scene" but I don't think it need be scarfed down in mass quantities either.

I was ovo-lacto vegetarian for two years before trying out the vegan way two months ago. I feel better without consuming dairy products and believe that cheese actually caused my headaches. The only difficult part has been missing pizza and eating out. You'd be amazed how many restaurants use dairy in most meals or even bread. The good thing is that is has cleaned up my diet considerably and I'm eating more nutrient packed foods. It all depends on your goals. I became vegan for a number of reasons, primarly ethical reasons. If it's only about improving your diet, then cheese in moderation is fine.

AGREED 100%!!! American cheese is an abomination and disgraces the name of cheese! :p

I LOVE cheese - sharp cheddar, feta, swiss, parmigiano reggiano (the real stuff from Italy, not that powdered crap in a shaker can), havarti... ahhhh, cheese. So lovely. So wonderful. So tasty.

I'm an ovo-lacto vegetarian, like you, Shannon, and I like my cheese. I don't have it every day, but several times a week, for sure. I mean, what's Friday Night Pizza Night without cheese??? I don't think cheese is very good for you - it's high in saturated fat and sodium. When you really think about it, it's basically a salty block of milk fat. But it tastes so darn good - I don't think I could give it up. I like to think of it as a treat. :9

Believe it or not, I was thinking about posting about cheese, too. Maybe because I've got a huge wedge of spanish manchego left over from NYE. It's definitely my favorite, and I was thinking "should I not eat this now that I'm back to trying to eat clean?" But it does supply protein and calcium, and tastes so darn good, so a little is fine... moderation is key here because it is mega-calorie-dense.

My thoughts on cheese are "YUMMMMMMY!!!!" I don't eat a lot of it, but I don't exactly avoid it. I have pretty much cut milk out of my diet because I think I'm a bit lactose intolerant. I know my gas output is much less since I stopped drinking so much of it. But the cheese, well, I'll still have it if it's around. Especially the feta!

Ha! Beavs, I just said the same thing about American cheese to a waitress the other day when I asked what kind of cheese they had for my burger. She said it was American, and I wrinkled my nose and said "that's not cheese". But it was all they had.

Yeah, that's right...I will never give up cheeseburgers. I think it was William Wallace who said, "They can take our lives, but they'll never take our CHEESEBURGERS!!!!!"

So, most of you think it's pretty tasty and okay in moderation. What's your definition of "moderation"? Once a week? Once a day?

The nutrition info on the back of my cheddar cheese says a serving size is 1 cubic inch. Oh, come on.

I love cheese, eat it most days, will never give it up.

My favorite is small squares of Monterey Jack cheese with wheat crackers -- usually have 6 for a snack and it makes me feel satisfied!!

I've just been nibbling on some lovely double cream brie. The last bits of the Christmas treats that came into the house, soooo yummy! I love a little asiago broiled on a pita then left to cool. Crisp and delish. I indulge in cheeses like feta, sharp cheddar and stilton because their flavour is so intense, a little goes a long way.:9

Take Care
Laurie:)

>i see no problem with adding a little everyday. that doesn't
>mean eating a pound of sharp provolone, lol.

Darn! LOL! A pound of provolone sounds pretty good right about now... ;)

Shannon, are you telling me you don't precisely measure your cheese to make sure you have exactly 1 cubic inch??? :p I always get out my ruler.... NOT! Actually, I like to get those Sargento cheese snacks - preportioned, so I don't go overboard. The Chipotle Cheddar is deeeeeelicious! :9

LOL - No, Emily, I just slice off a hunk and enjoy. I don't really want to see what an actual serving size looks like. It'd just depress me.
