So!! what 3 movies did you "WASTE" your hard earned money on

OR

what would you watch again on DVD?

For me:

Alien VS Predator - TOTAL TOTAL MONEY WASTER - I got sucked in because as two seperate movies, they were great, so put two great movies together and what do you get? CRAP!

Team America World Police - A DVD KEEPER - the movie that made me laugh the most in 04 - stupidly funny........... but clever and a great mood lifter

Exorcist - The Beginning - HEART STARTER for me. Love, Love, Love a bit of adrenalin rush at the movies........although I usually few those scary bits with my hands covering my face and looking through my fingers

BEST:

"The Station Agent" - an 88-minute movie about three quirky, ordinary people who stumble into being friends, and that is it and that is all in terms of the action in the movie - and you just want to hit the "replay" button at the end;

"Bad Santa" - and Santa's really REALLY Billy-Bob BAAAAD! but hilarious (as are the late John Ritter and the underutilized Bernie Mac);

"The Cooler" - a lifelong loser (William H. Macy) who cools hot tables at a seedy Vegas casino for a seedy boss (Alec Baldwin who's better than ever) starts to . . . well, win for a change.

WORST:

"Van Helsing" - I truly thought I was going to die during that movie, bludgeoned by sound and visual fury and signifying less than nothing;

"Elf" - Will Ferrell (and Adam Sandler) is a symbol of everything that's wrong with Big-Box Hollywood (obviously I waited until this piece of carmelized dreck came out on DVD) - a human raised in Santa's workshop goes to New York and realizes what a Brave New World it is (like that theme hasn't been mined a few million times before);

Can't think of a third worst. Maybe therapeutic amnesia has kicked in.

I liked:

1. Chronicles of Riddick
2. The Grudge ( Japanese Version )
3. The Incredibles

Didn't like:

1. Blade ( 3 ... what was that? )
2. Alexander ( what WAS that?? )
3. Oceans 12

Definitely
Hero: Chinese subtitles, amazing, beautiful, thoughtful! Along the same lines as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

Kill Bill 2: Just kicks...well, those lower cheeks

The Fog of War: Should be required viewing for all, especially all students. A moving, fascinating, chilling documentary with former US Secretary of Defense, Robert McNamara

I try not to see bad movies, but we signed up for the pay one price rent as many videos as you want and so to get our money's worth we saw a lot,
I didn't really like Jersey Girl or Girl with a Pearl Earring (I had loved the book and the movie just wasn't my "version" of events).

OH!! OH!!!

I REMEMBER MY THIRD WORST MOVIE!

"National Treasure" - Nicholas Cage at his Nicholas Cagiest (please see comments re Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler).

Mog, you're gonna LOVE "The Cooler". Also consider "Who Is Cletus Tout?" with Christian Slater and Tim Allen - Slater takes on the unfortunate - for him - pseudonym Cletus Tout, who happens to be marked for extinction by cool hit man (and armchair movie analyst) Critical Jim (Allen in one of his most tolerable performances) (please see comments re Will Ferrell and Adam Sandler and Nicholas Cage).

Doncha just LOVE that hottie Peter Dinklage?

Best: Maria Full of Grace
Sideways
Fahrenheit 911

I also liked Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Motorcycle Diaries a lot.

Worst: National Treasure (my husband dragged me to this one)
Spiderman 2 (my nephew was visiting)
Alfie

I am looking forward to Million Dollar Baby, the new Eastwood film, and Bad Education by Almodovar

Oh, yes, I really want to see Ray and Hotel Rwanda. I can't remember when I saw Dogville, but I found it very provocative--so provocative I was muttering to myself toward the end, fearful that I was going to another Breaking the Waves, which made me sick. And--I did get a charge out of I Heart Huckabee's.

Best Movies for 04 (honestly, I don't know if I saw 3 good movies)
-- Garden State
-- Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
-- The Bourne Supremacy

Worst Movies for 04
-- Dawn of the Dead (most likely the worst movie of any year!)
-- The Forgotten

Not a big movie goer. I always wait till they come out on DVD, but my best movies I watched were
1) The Day After Tomorrow
2) Spiderman 2
3) Christmas with the Kranks

those are all the ones I saw for the year 2004

WORST

Stepford Wives
Mona Lisa's Smile

BEST

Bad Santa (i watched it 3 times in a row!)
B Jones Edge of Reason
Love Actually

Gorgeous and imminently watchable on multiple occasions:

1.Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
2.Before Sunrise & Before Sunset combo
3.Whale Rider

Complete Shite:

1.Dogville (longer and grimmer than a funeral dirge and overly self-indulgent with its own theatricality...and haven't we really had enough of Ms. Kidman by now?!?!?!)

2.I'll Sleep when I'm Dead (although Clive Owen is so much better than the role he had in this film...he's a man to watch)

3.Princess Diaries 2

4.About Schmidt (I'm sooooo tired of Jack Nicholson already...)

Starred mentions also for fabulousness:

1.American Splendour
2.Station Agent
3.Fahrenheit 911
4.Incredibles

Haven't yet seen but dying to watch:

1. Sideways
2. Kinsey

One just sticks out in my mind.

I could not stand "Meet The Fockers". It was awful and not nearly as funny as the first one. "Meet The Parents" was so much better. I was really disappointed and felt like walking out, but I stuck it out and watched it.
x(

Stepford Wives was also a big waste!

OK, I'll come out and say it...I LOVE "Elf"!! I went and bought it the day it came out on DVD and I've seen it 3 times. It is now a holiday MUST along with The Muppet Christmas Carol and Charlie Brown.

Others we liked:
Collateral
Bourne Identity/Supremacy
Napoleon Dynamite
Open Range

As for movies I hated, the only one that comes to mind is Ladykillers. Too much cussing. We don't go to the theater much (Polar Express 3-D was the last one we saw at the theater), and if a movie we rent is not for us we turn it off.

That's all that comes to mind right now.

I'm going on the assumption that this was movies either in the theater or on DVD. Best movie this year for me was Donnie Darko, which is an old movie, but just gaining popularity now.

Also loved, The Incredibles and Love Actually.
:)

Runner up would be The Forgotten for pure jump factor!

Worst movie hands down was Shark Tale.

There are quite a few movies I have yet to rent, *Garden State* and *Shaun of the Dead* being at the top of that list, but the best movie I saw this year was *Shrek 2* by a landslide. The only bad movie I saw was *Elf* when I was visiting my nieces and nephew. I saw quite a few mediocre movies this year that don't belong on any "best" or "worst" lists.

My DH and I are big Shrek fans. My DH reminds me a lot of Shrek. Among other things, they have similar physiques. Sad to say, I'm a bit like Fiona myself. A princess with ogre-ish tendencies. :+

Nancy234 - you'll like "Shaun of the Dead" - DH and I rented that one this weekend and we really enjoyed it. You can't put it neatly in a box (comedy? horror?).

Another indie genre-musher we really enjoyed was "Bubba Ho-Tep", about an aging, infirm Elvis impersonator (who actually thinks he's Elvis) who teams up with another infirm whacko who thinks he's JFK (Ossie Davis) to save their Texas nursing home from a mummy that's plaguing them. You'll be howling with laughter while at the same time scratching your head wondering what kind of movie you're seeing.

Sounds great, A-jock. I'll also try your other recommendations. This is a very helpful thread, especially right before a 3-day weekend! Bubba sounds hysterical.

Just a bald-head's up, Nance - the humor in "Bubba Ho-Tep" is pretty salty. "Elvis" has a growth on his unit that is the subject of many a dialog exchange.

A-Jock

Why would anyone watch an unnecessary "Ladykillers" remake when the original, black and white with Alec Guinness and Peter Sellers, was soooooo excellent and still gets the laughs?

Try it! It will revive this story for you..
