Yoga vs Power Yoga?

I'm wondering if anyone can tell me about the differences between Yoga and Power Yoga?

I never thought I'd be interested in Yoga, but I definately feel the need to stretch lately.

Thanks,
Liz

Liz,

Beware Power Yoga! IMHO, it is the hardest exercise you will ever do. I see Cathe has incorporated one or two power yoga moves into Boot Camp. I was a little bored with my yoga tapes, so I ordered a power yoga tape and took a power yoga class and almost died (okay, I'm exaggerating again, but I didn't recover for weeks!!). Someday, I hope to do power yoga. But that will only be after I have conquered every Cathe workout there is and have started to find that nothing else is challenging. I think we may be talking about year 3003. :)

If you're just starting out with yoga, there's a lot out there to learn and to know, I found, and there are many different types of yoga that emphasize various different things. I would suggest starting by taking a basic class or with a video that comes highly recommended on Videofitness.com.

Are you sure you didn't get into an Ashtanga Yoga class or video??

I like Bryan Kest's original 3 Pack Power Yoga Series. The production and the whole thing. It's one set I'm proud to have in my collection. I'm not into yoga at all but if I start to get all tight and miserable then his volume 1 or 2 usually gets rid of the knots in my back and it really does wonders for the hamstrings. I remember ending up climbing out of bed because I couldn't sleep because my back hurt and doing his workout and after an hour the back felt great and I could sleep. So there must be something to this YOGA thing. That being said, if all you want is gentle yoga stretching ... Ali Mc Graw has a pretty one. I tried doing it twice but couldn't finish it...no attention span for that sort of thing. :p

Hey, Nancy, no need to wait until 3003 to do Power Yoga!! I find it a great complement to Cathe workouts -- sure, it's hard at first, but you can use it to help you get into shape rather than waiting until you are in great shape! I've been doing Ashtanga Yoga since 1995 -- it makes my performance on Cathe tapes better, and Cathe workouts make my Yoga practice go better. You won't believe how strong your core and upper body will get; the ab segment of PUB is actually not all that bad for me (although my form isn't perfect yet) and Yoga has definitely helped with that.

Well, I've been researching this a bit more (thanks for that link BTW) and have read many negative things about Rodney Yee and lots of good things about Bryan Kest.

I never considered myself a yoga person, but from time to time I feel very 'tight' and thought it might help.

Thanks everyone,
Liz
