Yoga - to supplement a cathe rotation???

Hello everyone. I start week 10 of P90x tomorrow. What a ride it's been and the results are incredible.

Today I went for a run (haven't in a few years) and ran 4 miles with no stops! All thanks to the conditioning of p90x. I've gone from 2 boys pushups to 15-18 perset (one of 20!). Still no pullup but I'm close!

Once I'm done I'm planning 6 weeks off and will do a cathe rotation GS (KM, LM, Imax3), I series, and P90 MS . I'm thinking 2 weeks each before I start 2nd rotation of X.

I love cathe it's great for cardio and strength but NO YOGA!

I'm looking to incorporate yoga into a rotation so far I'm leaning toward Bryan Kest? I've learned the importance yoga is to overall fitness.

Would love to hear your thoughts on bryan Kest or other yoga?

Robyn,
I LOVE Bryan Kest and in fact he is going to be in our town this weekend for a 3 day workshop and I am attending every one of his 3 hour classes. He is incredible. His videos are tough. They hit every muscle group and some you did not even know you had. You elongate your body while also strengthening it, which is quite a concept. I have all of his dvd's. I love the 3 package one with #1 being sweat, #2 tone and #3 energize. You can get them at Collage video or his website which is bryankest.com, I beleive.

I also love Baron Baptiste. He has a lot of dvd's as well. My favorite one for him is called long and lean yoga. There is a lot of ab work in that one. I have a lot of other instructors, but those two are my fave.

I recently have had some sciatica pain from running too much and doing the yoga has made a huge differnce. Give it a try and I think you will probably like it.

Let us know what you think! And, if you want to join in on the runners check-in we are the cheetah check-in. Have fun!

I found how great yoga is as well when doing P90X. I do portions of Yoga X with Cathe or Shiva Rheas Yoga Shatki. I like this one because it has a Matrix where you can pick which portions of the workout you want to put together to do, or there are 3 predone workout sequences. I had never done yoga before P90X. The flexibility work is so great of an addition to working out.

As with Diane Sue I too started Yoga with P90X. I think once a week is a good thing.

I agree also with Susan about Bryan Kest & Baron Baptiste (they are the only others I have!)

Good job on the 4 mile run Robyn!! Also way to go on the push-ups....pull-ups on the other hand are always hard!!...:)

Hi Susan, Diana Sue and Carole:

Thanks for your replies!

Ok I'll check out Bryan Kest and Baron Baptiste. Interesting how we all got hooked on yoga through p90x. How do they compare? I was looking on videofitness and couldn't really decipher the difference?

Susan - Very cool about taking the class with Bryan Kest - let us know how it goes.

Diana Sue - I didnt realize you did p90x too. When did you do it? I'm on week 10 (today) and am planning a 2nd round starting the 1st of the year. It's just what I needed.

Carole - Thanks for the good job. You were one of the people who got me to try out P90x. I'm so glad I listened to you!

Robyn,

I'll third/forth/fifth the Bryan Kest / Baron Baptiste recommendations! I love both of them, and use them quite a bit. I'd highly recommend Bryan's 3 workout set - it's dirt cheap on Amazon, and the workouts are still top notch (it's a bit old, but you'd never know). The workouts increase in difficulty, but even the first one is a good, solid yoga practice. I recently got Baron's LIVE! DVD, which has 3 workouts on it - 2 30 minute practices, one focusing on core, the other on mainly glutes and hamstrings (great for after a run!), and one 60 minute practice. I like all 3 of these, and use them often. I just got the Shiva Rea Yoga Shakti DVD, but have only tried one of the pre-set practices on it. I think I'll really like the matrix feature once I start exploring the DVD more. This has "lunar flow" sequences on it, which are supposed to be more relaxing, rather than invigorating. I'm hoping to figure out a good 20 minute series to pull together to do before bed fairly often.

To compare to YogaX.... Hmmmm.... Kest & Baptiste are similar to YogaX, in that it's flowing, power yoga, but they both seem to move a bit faster than YogaX - the vinyasas are faster moving. They will both feel very familiar to you, but will offer differences that you will like as well. My favorite is still YogaX, and I was a huge Kest fan before the X - so Tony has bumped Bryan in that department. But I'm glad that I have all of the options that I have, and really do use them all. You can go wrong with anything recommended here.

I really like Steve Ross. He has a show on oxygen in the mornings calle Inhale. It is great. I love the music he plays and his attitude. It is on very early so I usually tivo it so that I can skip through the commercials.

I'm another person who got into yoga thanks to P90X (I'd dabbled before, but hadn't done anything regular...and I've gotten away from doing it regularly again!)

I like Eoin Finn's "Power Yoga for Happiness." It has options for several different-length workouts. "Magically Hips" is one of my favorites.

Also, Bodywisdom's "Power Yoga for Everyone" and "Power Yoga for Athletes" both offer a variety of lengths of programs, and the instruction is excelllent. (Just watching the workouts, they seem very boring--just a guy in front of a curtain on a very plain set, with voiceover instruction--but when you actually do them, they feel really good).

I second Eion Finn's Power Yoga for happiness. Magically Hips is great.

I also like Shiva Rea a lot. I like Yoga Shakti or Fluid Power by her.

Mark Blanchard is (IMO) the toughest there is in Power Yoga. Let me see if I can find his website. www.progressivepoweryoga.com

His practices are a bit on the long side...but they're very good.

If you want something shorter and easier....Rainbeau Mars has a lot of 30 min and a couple 45 minute DVDs sold at CDUniverse or Amazon. She's also one of my favorites. I particulary like the Yoga for Beauty series, Dusk. Not the most challenging....but excellent.

Lastly, FitnessOrganica has one called Altar of the Heart by Tilak Pyle which is long but it is very good. Not real strenuous...but enough to work you a little.

Good luck and do let us know what you decide on.

Thanks everyone SO MUCH for your great ideas! Decisions, decisions. With my 2nd a sr. in HS and 2 in college next year I can't buy them all. Thanks I'll do some research.

RPage - For the most part I'm doing classic and following the diet quite closely. I've done some doubles but not enough to call it a doubles rotation! Time is the biggest problem for that! In a year from now I'll have time but not now!

Robyn,

Email me: michelle dot spina at comcast dot net.

I'd be happy to loan you some Baron or Bryan if you'd like to "try before you buy." Seriously. :)

I have Bryan's Energize, Sweat, & Tone on VHS free to a good home if anyone is interested. It is so difficult for me to part with exercise videos even when I have DVD copies.;( Anyway, if anyone wants them but then orders the DVD or just doesn't like the videos, just pass them on to someone else.

I've been doing yoga for several years and find myself doing more and more of it, even if it's a shorter, more restorative type after a Cathe workout. IMO, nothing beats it for flexibility.

My favorite power yoga DVD's are:

1. YOGA X - I love this challenging workout and often do the second half after a 30 min cardio session.
2. EOIN FINN, Power Yoga for Happiness - 80 minutes of footage with several premixes ranging from 30-55 minutes. Shows several levels. Love it, love it, love it.
3. BRYAN KEST, 1995 Power Yoga Series - 3 workouts, about 55 min each. I find his personality to be annoying, but the sequencing is very good and he holds the poses a long time. I bought this at DeepDiscountDVD for a little over $13 with free shipping.
4. EOIN FINN, Power Yoga - Released before PY4H. 70 min with a 40 min premix.
5. BARON BAPTISTE, Soul of Strength - This is a bit less challenging than the above four, but quite good. Other DVD's I've tried of his aren't challenging enough, although I do like his CD, "Putting Postures to Your Prayers" which is quite challenging.
6. RODNEY YEE, Power Yoga - This was released a couple years ago and is the best of his I've tried. It has a TON of sun salutations, however, so I don't reach for it as often as my others. His form is beautiful to watch and he moves quite slowly through the poses, which makes it more challenging and a nice change of pace.
7. DAVID SWENSON, Short Forms - 3 workouts: 15, 30 and 45 min each. It's an introduction to the Primary Series of Ashtanga Yoga and is extremely well-cued. I wish the poses were held longer than 5 breaths each, but I know this is strictly Ashtanga.

I'm always trying to fit more yoga into my rotations without sacrificing weights/cardio and without working out for much more than an hour each time. There are threads about "fitting it all in" if you'd like to do a search. I'd try to find a couple for you, but I need to go make dinner!:)
