Yoga or Pilates?

I have been doing stretch max after my morning run on Monday and Friday. I am looking into Yoga or Pilates as an extra workout per week. I am confused as to which would benefit me more. Like a lot of women, I am looking to firm up the abs and lean out the legs, while building upper body definition and strength.
Any suggestions on which type workout to choose?
Thanks to all who take time to answer.

well power yoga can help with those goals as well as pilates but pilates does more focus on strengthing core. i will be no help to your question LOL b/c i like to mix in both. i will do 5-6 days of yoga and then add a day or two of pilates. i will do this first thing in the morning before breakfast. then after breakfast i go about my other workouts with weights and cardio. i think each has helped me in my others to maintain strength and endurance not to mention a good yoga stretch workout to relax you after a day of hard work and maintain a good peace of mind. relaxing and taking time to meditate and just focusing on poses really clears up anything else and makes them seem trivial.

I do both:) They both can help you attain your goals. You really don't have to choose one over the other either. If you are stuck for time, there are so many workouts that incorporate both such as Yogilates, Tom McCook's Combining Pilates & Yoga for Balance as well as Denise Austin's DVD JH Pilates (if you don't mind her voice and don't follow her poor form during the roll-ups;)). For myself, I like to remember there is no law that says I have to do that "entire workout" that day.....I can always do the second half the next day;)

Robin:
Thanks for your reply. I already have the Denise Austin one that incorporates both. For now I guess I will dig it out. I feel like maybe I have progressed to the next level though as I find that a pretty easy workout.
Would the other 2 you mentioned be a step up?
I had heard you mention in one of your other posts about Sarah Picot and had been considering ordering that or the Bryan Kest yoga. Kind of going back and forth between those. Decisions Decisions

Get Bryan Kest Power yoga DVD for sure! It has three (approx 55 minutes each) practices. I got mine pretty cheap on deepdicounts.com. I think Amazon sells it too. I still haven't gotten to the third practice yet. It's hard! }( One of these days.

I've been looking on collage and debating on getting Sarah Picot's pilates mat. I'd be curious to see what others think of her DVD.

Hi Paula,

I just googled it so you could see the DVD I was talking about. I'm pretty sure if you search around you can find it cheaper.

Here's the link:

Yes, it's (1) beginner (2) intermediate and then (3) advanced. I stick with one and two right now, but I have something to work towards.;-)

HTH!

ETA: Read the reviews, especially the last one. It's true - you work as deep as YOU can.

i do enjoy bryan's yoga instructions. i have this dvd and power yoga weight loss, power yoga intensive body sculpt on VHS. i love them all. in the last two i mentioned they show a modifier but i don't think they have one on the Power Yoga DVD you just have to look around to see who is modifing the moves on their own. its a great yoga workout regardless and you can work it as deep as you can. as bryan says its not about what it looks like its about how it feels like.

It is called, "Power Yoga." It has 3 programs on one DVD: "Energize," "Tone" and "Sweat." The background exercisers are EXTREMELY flexible. Make sure you go into the poses to your own degree and are not comparing yourself to them or you'll be very intimidated. I like these because they're challenging, under an hour and he holds the poses a while. You can't beat the price at DeepDiscountDVD:

Sara Picots intermediate level is definitely a step up from Denise Austins and once you master the moves you can do a quick 20 minute Pilate workout:)....just make sure you are honestly working the movements and breathing techniques. As for Bryan Kest.....I totally agree with the other posters, you just can't go wrong. I enjoy his Power Yoga DVD (I also enjoy P90x's Yoga X). I have to admit, I am far better at doing Pilates than yoga, but yoga is much more forgiving than Pilates ("This is where you are today and that's okay" as Bryan says...;))

Yoga and Pilates really do go hand in hand. Pilates, although it has many of its own original movements, actually borrows from yoga so your Pilates technique can only improve with yoga.

Have fun...it's all good!
