yoga ok on a rest day???

This may seem like a simple or goofy question, but I'm curious if Yoga is "ok" on a rest day??? Today is a rest day after finishing STS week 1 and starting week 2 tomorrow. This morning I felt like I needed a good stretch and I reached for Rodney Yee's Power Yoga Total Body (which I absolutely LOVE, btw). But as I was doing it and shaking during some of the more 'powerful' poses, I wondered if this would truly be considered a rest day.

What are your thoughts?

Gayle

hmmm, I typically stretch on a rest day and it usually involves yoga or stretch max...power yoga might be too much though because it gets the heart rate up....

IMHO if you were shaking during some of the poses you were being taken out of resting state. Maybe find a gentler, flexibility-only-oriented yoga practice or do a Stretch Max segment instead, and save the Power Yoga for your week off after the end of each mesocycle.

Hi Gayle,

I agree with Aquajock - yoga can be very strenuous. I actually teach several classes a week, including a power yoga/yoga bootcamp and even though I'm not doing the full class, as I'm moving about watching students and helping with hands on adjustment, I still structure the rest of my training (i.e. STS as of next week!) with that in mind.

In order to do justice to STS, and to balance all of my weight training , I make my own personal yoga practice much less vigorous than I would if I was not doing Cathe's workouts. I think it's still okay to use the Rodney Yee DVD as part of your weekly regime, but be more gentle on a true 'rest day'.

If you want any advice on some other yoga DVDs, let me know - I have a huge library of them and can probably recommend some!

I'm glad you guys are discussing this. I had a regular, challenging yoga practice for years that I recently set aside for Cathe.

For me, both Cathe and a vigorous yoga practice are too much. I've modified with more gentle poses during the week, saving the more strenuous yoga for when it fits into a rotation I've created (usually a muscle endurance rotation). :)

Thanks, everybody, for your replies. I appreciate them all! My rest days will now consist of stretching workouts only!!! THANK YOU!

And I have to admit to some DOMS from yesterday's meeting with Rodney Yee! :D .....in my core and back.

I tried to do yoga on my off-weight days and truly found that the more powerful stuff was too hard too do, and I was over working the muscles. So I will do gentler forms of yoga on off days, but not the more strenuous stuff.

I'm a Registered Yoga Teacher (200+ hours) and here's what I would recommend. If you were shaking during some of the more powerful poses, you can always modify the poses. If you're not sure how, any qualified yoga instructor can help you or the Yoga Journal website can help (or send me the names of the poses in private message and I can tell you how to modify). Just trust your body in terms of what is your goal--do you want to successfully finish Cathe? If yes, then definetly modify the yoga and/or take a nice long walk. If you really want to "work" the yoga practice, then expect not to be as successful with STS.

Good luck!
