Yates woman got off

>Anytime you kill for no reason it’s insane. Should we let
>all the murders that kill for no reason get off on an insanity
>plea?

I used to think that, too. Certain crimes in and of themselves seem to be a sure sign that the perpetrator is insane.

But I think the legal use of 'insanity' is a bit different from the medical use of it. To be declared 'legally insane,' one has to be unable to distinguish between right an wrong. Not know that their actions were wrong. You can be medically 'insane,' but legally 'sane' if you are aware of the differences. (At least that's my understanding, after hours upon hours of watching legal shows on TV!;-) )

I agree Conni.

And this thing about "she got off", she will be institutionalize for an extremely long time. She will never be able to remarry or have children again. Don't you guys think something drastically was wrong here for a woman to kill her children? And I agree about that husband, who "of course" is remarried with step children. He knew about her condition, did NOTHING about having those children go to school instead of home school. Don't you think that is quite a bit? Five kids, under one roof, none in school, and she has to do everything? And don't forget about when she had #4, she had a horrendous time with post-partum.

I have empathy. My cousin's former girlfriend, married and had a child. And went downtown Chicago, and jumped off a building and killed herself. Now, how could she do this? How does anyone relate when you have not been through it, and she was having a hard time with post-partum. Some women don't need medication, and some do, and some have an extreme time.

Again, get off. How? No one won here and for women who have children, you should be the very FIRST to ask WHY, and HOW this could have happened!!! JMHO

Of course the husband should be held accountable. He KNEW and was TOLD after baby #4, what would happen for another child. And how could they live in such conditions for so long. Obviously, it was about monies, because he said on Larry King he spent 110K on Andrea's defense. Sorry, but he is the one that is off "scott free". And yes, he has no issue coming on TV with that grin, I wish Larry King would let women call into his show, I am sure there are PLENTY that have a LOT OF QUESTIONS for Mr. Yates. After Larry's show, you won't see him grinning for any other media outlet, period.

I wonder how much "evidence" and what it would do to our legal system if the husband had been prosecuted and found guilty. He was guilty for neglecting his wife's mental condition and I therefore endangering the children, but I think this is a fine line to prosecute.

Then would they go after parents whose kids went bad and prosecute them? I work with a woman who has one son continually in trouble with the law, one son who is on the right track. Are we going down the track that she would be prosecuted when he gets arrested for battery?

Yes, the husband should have knows that she was unstable, and made sure she got the help she needed, but not sure how you prosecute that, and to me leads to some very scary issues.

When people kill, at that moment they think it's the right thing to do,(or they would not be doing it.) Normal people would say they were insane at that moment.

She in my opinion should be put to death, the husband should be in jail.

She will be treated, released, and living next door to maybe someone who's reading this. That's not the way it should be......

At least that's my understanding and my experience after 23 plus years dealing with bad guys.

Excellent points and discussion :)

What strikes me is what great timing people's psychosis always seems to have! How convenient that her total breakdown happened in the one hour she was left alone in the day. I'm being snarky, but it does seem as if criminals always claim to be in the throws of psychosis one day, but the next they are lucid enough to hire Gloria Allred and talk to Dateline and generally advocate for themselves. Odd.

I have not read all the post above, but I am glad she will be getting treatment. You have no idea what it is like to have post-partum depression until you have lived through it yourself. Doctors do not always treat post-partum depression correctly. Yes, it is an illness.Yes, Sparrow some days you behave normal and feel your old self again, and other days you are a totaly different person(a monster at times). Yes, her husband should have seen the signs. Yes, he should be held accountable.

Just an opioion of someone who has had postpartum depression.

I disagree that Andrea going to a mental hospital will mean that she will get out in a couple of years or whatever. I think it's more likely she will spend her life locked away in a mental hospital. Look at John Hinckley, who shot President Reagan - he had schizophrenia, was found insane, and sent to a mental hospital. Although there were frequent reports that he was consistently taking his medication, and was much improved, he is still in the hospital and it's 30 years later. I think after about 10 years he wanted to be released and a bunch of psychiatrists testified that even though he had not had symptoms for some time he was still a danger to society, and I bet he'll never be released. The same thing may happen to Andrea.
