xylitol

As far as I know it is safe. It is used in most sugarless gums now a days because it is supposed to help prevent tooth decay. I have seen it at health/natural foods stores.

I prefer to use erythritol. Xylitol is very poisonous for dogs (not sure about cats) and just a small amount can kill them. I have 2 dogs at home and while I wouldn't intentionally feed them my food, accidents happen. It makes me nervous just thinking about them getting into the xylitol by accident or licking up my spill on the floor. Also, erythritol has the same tooth decay prevention benefits as xylitol so I am not giving anything up. I am not sure if erythritol is as sweet as xyltiol. I know it is about 75% as sweet as sugar but I prefer less sweet anyway.

Hope that helped.

It is safe for some people... It really bakes up well in sweet treats without bitter or chemical taste. My husband loves it and says he can't tell a difference between it and sugar. However, when I eat it I get very bad cramping in my stomach and gas. It is not absorbed by the body so it can cause discomfort in some and pass right thru others. If you use it, use small amounts and in moderation. Stevia is my favorite... It tastes good, it lowers bp, and it has no effect on blood sugar!
