Okay, I'll admit that I'm sitting here jealous of everyone who has the HC's to watch and I'm tired of waiting for mine....

Does anybody not have or watch TV? When we moved (about 6 months ago) we never got around to calling the cable company and we have been without TV since. Of course, we have dvds and videos and let our kids watch those, but my husband and I have found the lack of TV (especially commercials) has been really positive for all of us. My husband has now turned in to a sort of anti-TV crusader and sent me this link which I though I would pass on:

I must admit I have not read all of the articles, but some are pretty interesting. I especially thought the one about "Beautiful People Syndrome" would prove relevant to some of us Cathe-ites.

I hope nobody takes offense at my posting this, I just think it's interesting, and like I said before, I'm just trying to find something to do to until the UPS man arrives this afternoon.

Tracy,

I am intrigued. I have always dreamed of having a TV free home. I could just picture the kids and I reading books are playing games. HA!

My dh is a TV addict. We have one of those huge TV's in our living room, he is obsessed with high definition, satelite, etc. We even have a TV in our kitchen.

I try to keep the TV off in the daytime. My 4 year old started asking for everything he saw in commercials. He didn't even know what the product was half the time. It was funny. I had to explain advertisments to him.

We moved where we are now 3 months ago and have not put in cable or a dish. We can get in a few local channels. My 2 year old (3 next month) will watch sesame street but then he likes to watch DVD's. Dora the Explorer, he has picked up some spanish, especially counting. He also likes to watch Blue's clues and a few others. My two older boys wonder when they get to have more channels, they miss cartoons. We mainly watch DVD's or some of the shows we pick up with our little antenna. The older two do play the gamecube when allowed. They have to earn time before they can play though.

Hello!

We live in the North Georgia mountains and I homeschool my three children ages 8,7 and 4. We've always had cable but moved in November and could only get satelite. My dh said no way to $50 per month so we're TV-free. It was hard at first but I can honestly say we love it! Our kids do watch some videos and DVDs but very few. We also do have Gameboy but time on it is closely monitored as well. The children play outside and read more and my husband and I enjoy the time to read and do other things as well. I know some people love having TV but the benefits we've gained from getting rid of it outweigh the convenience at our house!!

We have never had cable. I think it is too expensive. Also, if my family had cable, we would watch it. That means spending less time on activites that we enjoy, such as kayaking, making soap, and cooking. We have videos and DVDs for the kids to enjoy if they want to see childrens programs.

Hi Tracy,

I do not watch much tv at all but my DH is quite the opposite so for us to have a TV Free home is impossible! lol I spend a lot of time doing other things because I find tv boring. I get in my moods where I just want to slug on the couch and watch tv or a movie but for the most part, I can't be bothered with it. I find that all I do is surf the channels anyway coz I can't find anything I want to watch.

We pay $50.00 per month for our cable subscription...if it were up to me I'd have it knocked down to basic for like $10.00 per month but DH would have heart failure! LoL

Have a great work out!

We have one tv in the family room. This has worked out great for us. We watch alot of documenteries from the BBC. Also, by the time the violent programs come on, it's too late in the evening so my kids don't watch them. Also, the commercials here in Europe are not filled with short sound bites.

You know, I have often wondered what those short sound bites do to a developing child's mind. Would it account for the rise in add in recent years ?

Do you live in Switzerland? Just curious because of your name....
my husband is over there right now in Zug.

tv makes me crazy! we have one inevery room b/c dh is obsessed. i only watch HBO or HGTV of Food network. i can't stand commercials but dh is crazy about all of thoses animated shows on comedy central and sci-fi(both of which i despise!) and he has to have it on all the time!!!!

We have 5 TV's - 3 with cable.........so we ARE alittle addicted to the "ucly box"

AND at least 2 are on all the time, but different channels

What irritates me most though is when a TV is left on in a room, but no one is in there.

With only 1 child at home now (who does her own thing) , and DH who travells alot, TV HAS become my solice at night when Im alone. Its relaxing for me, to curl up on the couch, find a "girlie" movie and eat my dinner in peace. So I will always at least have ONE TV in the house...........for me!
