Wrist Pain

I am experiencing quite a bit of pain in my wrists-could be the cold Canadain north or just overwork injury-but my question is what can I substitute for pushups for the chest and tricep dips on the step? I just can't stand that much pressure on that joint. Hope everyone had a great Christmas and you enjoy a Happy New Year!

Cybersis,
I cannot ever do pushups or dips either due to tendonitis in one wrist and ganglion removal surgery on the other. So, for pushups I usually substitute bench presses or flys. For dips, I substitute tricep kickbacks or overhead tricep presses. Good luck!

Hi Cybersis,

Iam in the same boat as Cruncholi (Hi Cruncholi btw!!) who helped me alot when I had my surgery for my ganglion cyst removal this summer. My other wrist has been hurting in the same place as well now for several months but Im pregnant so I can't get an MRI to see if I have another cyst. Anyhow, I too have had to just totally eliminate pushups and tricep dips and plank work (the ones that you hold yourself up at the wrist). I do very similar things as Cruncholi. Basically another set of any excercise for that bodypart. For triceps I like the cross body kickbacks that Cathe uses in her PS series. I don't see them in many of her other weight tapes so they are a good addition for me. For chest I usually add dumbell presses or switch to an incline or something like that. No matter what your wrist pain is from it is far better to avoid those high stress exercises until you are feeling better. If it seems to get worse I would get to a doctor for an x-ray and/or MRI.

Hope you feel better soon.

Hi Alison! I was wondering about your ganglion surgery and how you are feeling!? That is wierd about your other wrist feeling like you have a ganglion there. Listen to this... about 4 or 5 months after my ganglion surgery, my left wrist started hurting a lot, so I went to the doctor. He said that I had tendionitis and a small ganglion in that wrist! It's like I got rid of the one and now it grew on the other wrist. FRUSTRATING! That was in late 1993--now that small ganglion is still there, but it is not nearly as bad as the right one was. Anyway, congratulations on being pregnant again. That is very exciting!

Cybersis, I agree with Alison that the cross-body kickbacks in the PS series are a great one to substitute for the dips! Also, I thought of this after writing my last message to you...You could try wall pushups or fingertip pushups if you really want to do pushups. The wall pushups are not very challenging, but you will be putting much less stress on your wrist than regular pushups since you will be bearing less weight. The fingertip pushups are something I used to do in Tae Kwon Do class. It stresses the wrist less because your wrist remains straight, as opposed to the bent position with regular pushups. In one of her videos, Cathe recommends doing dips or pushups using a hex-head dumbell or pushup handlebars. You could try that, but that doesn't work for me either. Still too much pain. Just some suggestions!

Thanks guys for your help with alternate exercises. I will be sure to try them!
