Wow, Cathe & other Jerseyites

A fellow Jersey girl here!

Can you believe it? I was surprised to hear he resigned because of being gay, especially because of all the other controversy surrounding him!

Apparently he announced this in anticipation of a sexual-harassment suit being filed against him by a former (male) aide, who resigned after several questions were raised about his qualifications or lack thereof for his job (director of security). I don't think McGreevey's sexuality has anything to do with his ability to govern - but abuse of power/harassing a former aide, or hiring your unqualified squeeze for a job certainly does. What a mess.

I'm with you, Allison. I think it's true, and it's a shame, that a gay person would have had a difficult time making it as far as McGreevy has, but his whole "I'm a gay American" stance is covering for abuse of power issues that he doesn't have to mention because he is resigning, like using his position of power to hire his "unqualified squeeze". His resignation is not about being a gay American, and it's an insult to gay Americans that he is emphasizing it. He's not the hero he would like us to think he is, he's just another political sleazebag.

Well that was intentional. He didn't want to leave the seat vulnerable to a Republican getting elected. Also I do not believe he sexually harassed anyone. If anything, this guy took advantage of his relationship w/the governor to obtain a position he wasn't close to being qualified for.

The whole thing is just so bizarre. I work in NJ government & I'm just shell shocked over the whole thing, although it could, strangely enough, be really good for my career.

I just saw that on the news last night. (I'm a Chicagoan). I think it's honorable that he chose not to give that guy a high paying job so that he wouldn't tell. But I don't really know the whole story or what this guy's all about.

You seem to have it--basically the guy was trying to blackmail McGreevy, threatening to "out" him unless he got what he wanted. So McGreevy was pretty much backed into a corner. He could've chosen to fight the lawsuit & stay in office, but I think he chose the path he did to save the NJ Dem party. So yeah, I guess that is pretty honorable--he outed himself so state politics would still be aligned w/his general principles.

Funny, I don't see anything honorable about him at all. My guess is that there is more damaging info coming down the pike and he's doing this to stave it off and salvage what he can. McGreevy's administration has been corrupt from the beginning. He brought in the Israeli because he was sexually attracted to him, he didn't give a damn about exposing the security of the state or the nation (right after 9/11 too) by trying to give this guy access to classified information.

On top of that, he cuckolded his wife and family (those poor kids). This guy is a scumbag - good riddance.

I agree with Allison and shopgirl. This would be like Clinton putting Monica as head of Homeland Security. He also was on his second marriage and had kids, knowing he was gay. Nothing honorable at all! Thats my 2 cents worth.

LOL well that's somewhat of an exaggeration--the guy did work in what is Israel's equivalent to our DHS, so he did have some experience in the area. And when the US is looking for advice on homeland security the first place they go is Israel, which has been fighting terrorism longer than most of us have been alive. Frankly nobody here seems to know if McGreevey met the guy when he was seeking DHS employees or made him a DHS employee b/c he met him.

I'm a Dem but I'm kind of ambivalent about the whole thing--I had my own problems w/McGreevey's policies & agenda that have nothing to do w/this situation, & that factors into my opinion. I do feel sorry for his family though--they're the real victims in this whole mess.

I agree with that. I do feel sorry for his family. On the news last night I saw his wife standing there smiling. I wondered how she could seem so happy.

I have problems with this beyond the gay thing, which as others have said, shouldn't really make a difference. The fact that his boyfriend was given several high paying jobs for which he was not qualified is the issue. The guy was some sort of art major or something similar from a nondescript college. There's also some speculation as to whether his wife knew he was gay way back when and served as a cover so he could get elected easier. My source is Sean Hannity's radio show.
I find this mostly comical but at the same time it's not good that this involved Homeland Security, which in and of itself is impotent and has done very little about security in this country. But, in this day and age of politics where both parties basically stand for the same thing, one candidate(Kerry) seems to stand for everything with all of his flip-flopping, no real issues are debated, people are elected based on personality and how they look in front of a camera, and all of the other hidden agendas, it's just another garbage bag on the stinkpile that is U.S. politics.
I'm done now......big, deep, breath! LOL!

Coming out against the coming out!

McGreedy (yes, I spelled it the way it should be spelled) did NOT resign because he is gay. The governor of the state I love is under investigation for many, many wrong doings. There are many people in his cabinet that are also under investigation. This guy was under pressure by the democratic party to get out before the fire got too hot. He resigned to cover his political ass. The gay thing is just a cover.
