Workouts during sinus trouble?

Hi Cathe,

I realize you're not a doctor - I'm just asking your opinion. I get frequent bouts of sinus problems. Sometimes I can function great, sometimes they cause a slight fever & I'm not ok. During the times when I feel mostly 100% (little tired maybe), is it physically ok to work out? More specifically, if I work out too hard, am I taking the energy that should be used by my body to heal the sinus issue, and instead making it work to recover from the workout? Obviously when my body says rest, I rest. I just hate to have to back off my workout schedule, even for illness, and find myself unconciously beating myself up in my head during the day if I skipped a workout the night before. The rational Me knows it's important to rest when I'm ill, but I don't want the pesky sinus problem to rule my life, and I want to stay at a healthy fitness level. Also I'm just plain addicted to working out - it's my ME time.
Thanks for any advice.

Hi Marianne! I get seasonal sinus infections not pleasant & it does zap my energy. If you have the energy to workout, I suggest you lower your weights than what you normally lift. My muscles shake far too much b/c of lack of oxygen so I always have to drop the weight poundage. Cardio should be just intermediate b/c I've experienced if I do any type of high intensity cardio I suffer worse & have to completely rest. I don't let it rule my life either. Good luck!

On another note, have you tried Shaklee products at all? My DH suffers from chronic infections & has been taking alfalfa tablets & they've worked wonders on him & me. I'm not planning on taking any antibiotics as they kill off all bacteria good & bad in our bodies. Please check out this website or email my friend, Robin Walker who's a distributor of Shaklee. Her email address is: [email protected].

Hi Kathy!

Can I ask you a quick question about the alfalfa? I have the same chronic problems. I actually managed to skip last year without a sinus infection, but came very close. What does the alfalfa do for the sinuses? Does it help with the drip? My problem is the thick crude in the back of the throat almost all the time, nasty stuff. There's more to it, but probably TMI! I detest taking the anitibotics too, especially since the body can build up immunities for it. I just have to be careful since I got menengitis from my sinuses when I was 17, at risk for it to return. So I would love any information to help with the problem. Thanks......

Hi Rhea! Yes the alfalfa takes that nasty mucous (sp?) away. I would want you to contact Robin Walker at [email protected] who will go into detail re alfalfa. I seem to have deleted the pdf document that she sent me. Because you suffered from menengitis, you might need more supplements than just the alfalfa. Shaklee has a new product called Netrifen which is supposed to build up your immune system so you won't suffer from colds or viruses. This might be very helpful to you.

I personally have been taking Shaklee's Vita-lea multivitamin & Physique (which is a powder you mix w/8 oz. of milk to make a shake) to help w/my recoveries from strength training. What a difference these products have made to my w/outs. I have more energy & no pain (DOMS). Please contact her. HTH, Kathy:D

Kathy thanks very much for taking the time to recommend the alfalfa. I will definitely check into it. I had posted my question the other night in despair after feeling sickly AGAIN, after nearly a month on antibiotics didn't work. I normally do not respond much anymore to this therapy and it suddenly occured to me that same night - why am I doing it then? It's just ravaging my system. I did get advice from my doctor to use Sudafed 12 hour, it's stronger and time released so it's got more time to really get in and dry out the mucus, whereas the 4 hour pills spike and then are gone from your body before they have time to really get in there. Anyway, 2 days on it and I can already tell a difference. I'd rather take pseudephedrine for awhile than be on another month of Augmentin.

I listen to my body and try to workout at a lesser intensity whenever possible. I just want to make sure I'm not borrowing from the energy my body needs to use for getting well. When it comes to Cathe workouts I get involved and tend to want to go full tilt 150% and then realize afterward that I overdid it, when I'm all wobbly and weak. So I have to remind myself going in, that if I feel less than 100%, then it's a less than 100% intensity day.

Thanks again. I will check out the website!
Oh, and if your help isn't enough to make me smile, Cathe finally made her announcement. Improving on her already stellar name... and new workouts!!! WOOHOOO!!!
