workout split debate

I frequent other forums, especially oxygen magazines forum. Over there they put down quite often 1 body part per day splits and 3 day splits saying that the muscles are targeted frequently throughout the week. They recommend hitting each muscle twice per week. What are you guys opinion? I have had success on a 3 day split. Cathe swiches between one body part per day and a 3 day split and look at her; she looks amazing! I love the setup of a 3 day or even a 4 day split but a 3 day allows me to get my 3 cardio days in. I don't think i could do GS 2 times per week for each muscle since i push as hard as i can the first time. I would love to hear your opinion. thanks

I agree with your thinking... I look at Cathe and she is doing something right! I love one body part per day with 30 minutes of cardio. This works for me. I am now doing a 3 day split with Pure Strenght series. Previous to this I did an endurance rotation with Muscle Endurance and the Pyramids. I think everyone is different and the more you mix it up, the better it works. JMO!:)

Although I change it up a bit due to time constraints, mood, vacation etc., in a "perfect" world, the format I think works best is:

cardio
upper body
cardio
lower body
cardio
total body (such as, MuscleMax, Jari Love Ripped) OR circuit (such as Drill Max, LIC, etc.)
rest, stretch or leisurely walk

That way you hit each body part 2x (once hard, once a little lighter).

To say one way is right and everything else is inferior is close minded. Reminds me of the "Conversation with a Body Builder" thread.

Everyone's body is different and results vary from person to person...goals vary from person to person.

So, I think it depends on the body type and the goals.

There is (almost) ALWAYS more than one right way!

Of course there is! I was not advising, I simply meant for ME personally that seems to work best.

thanks ladies. you are so right! there is not one way or wrong way to workout. what matters is that your working out and you are seeing the improvements you are looking for. i have a problem sometimes posting on the oxygen thread. i feel like there is a group of people on there that are rude and jump down your throat if you just post your own opinion or say what works for you. it gets frustrating. i find much more support over here with a lot less critisism. thanks ladies:)

I see what you are saying and it is irritating. Discussions are much more useful when the parties are WILLING to see things from another perspective.

Take the issue at hand...if I do a one body part a week rotation, yes...I will see results and I will be fit. But I won't like the results because I get too bulky due to my short, stuby limbs. I grow muscle pretty easy (yes, I consider myself lucky) but I don't want the thickness I get from slow and heavy type workouts. Besides, they do nothing to achieve my goals...optimal health and a better marathon.

However, the same rotation I don't like would be perfect for toastythemosty...she is long and lean, that type of rotation gives her the perfect definition.

Totally different body types, different goals! Two totally different ways of working out (I do total body endurance rotations and circuits...lots of cardio) and we are both right!
