Working out with kids around...?

How many of you are moms, or have kids around your house regularly? Do you attempt to work out when they are around?

I have a 2 year old who is all over the place. Also, he loves my step and thinks it is hilarious to imitate Cathe and the crew.

Am I kidding myself to think that he will behave and let me do my thing while I work out with him in the room? I really need to work out tonight after work [see my post, entitled "I quit" :( ].

Hmmm...a two year old...I'm thinking you are not going to be able to fully concentrate on your workout and may risk injury if you are preoccupied with keeping one eye on him. Just my opinion.

I have much older kids - ages 9 and 11, and they know that when I'm exercising they are NOT to interrupt me unless A. someone is at the door or B. someone is bleeding or C. the house is on fire. Otherwise, bother me and you pay the consequences! I know you can't do that with your 2 year old. Do you have someone that can keep him occupied so you can get that workout in?

My son will be 2 in a month. I am a SAHM. I work out when he naps. I also have a gym membership so he can play in the daycare there while I'll exercise there. I've never tried to exercise when it was just him and I home alone and he was not napping. I don't intend to until he's old enough to play in a room by himself w/o needing to be watched/constantly checked on. When I work out I don't like to be interrupted. :)

I agree. I have daughters 6, 4 and 15 months. The older two are fine if I give them instructions not to bother me. (I usually let them use the computer.) But the 15 month old is a diferent story. I have tried many things including putting her in the pack and play near me with a bunch of toys but it was much less than ideal. So I have resigned myself to working out while she is sleeping, either before she gets up, naps, or after she goes to bed. Just think, it is only a temporary thing. It will get easier as the kids get older.

Hi. When I first started working out with Cathe my son was 2 1/2. I would take his toys upstairs with me and he'd play with his toys and I'd work out. I would have to pause the workout a lot to tend to him but it wasn't so bad. He is now 5 and my "baby" is 18 months. There is no way that I can workout while he is in the room. He gets in the way, tries to crawl on the step, etc. I'd try it once and see how it goes. Good luck!!!

My son is 6 now, so he can play by himself on the other side of the room or be upstairs, he knows not to bother me. But when he was younger, hubby would just occupy him while I was working out. Of course, that got me in the habit of w/o right after dinner b/c hubby could so dishes and watch our son at the same time. Babysitting and dishes!!! I love that man! I don't like having to w/o right after dinner, but that's where the time has stuck it at. On the upside, it keeps me from eating so much. Its hard to do crunches with a belly full of spaghetti. But, anyway, I don't know your situation, but see if hubby/bf/gf/significant other/whatever, can watch him while you work out. Then give that person an hour kid free while they do something they like. When your son gets older, and knows to be out of the way and be quiet he can play by himself in the same room you're in.

Hi-

I workout with my son around and have since he was born. ( He's 5 now so its not as much of a challenge as when he was younger.)

I blocked off an area next to my workout space w/ baby gates. In it I would put toys, a snack, etc. I think it worked out bec. I could see him and he could see me. It definitely wasn't ideal and alot of the time I would get interrupted, but it was manageable. Or, I would workout at his naptime or before he got up in the morning.

Now, that he is older he will watch TV or play his video game.

It IS frustrating, I know!! Hang in there, believe it or not, it IS temporary and pretty soon it won't be an issue.

Good luck! Lynn M.

Honestly, I was not able to really work out until my daughter was 4. Up until then, she took it very personally if I didn't totally pay attention to her while I was working out. Really, up until then, my husband wasn't very helpful at keeping her out of the way while I exercised either.

Now she's almost 7 and will hang out talking with me while I'm exercising, or will play on NickJr.com.

I def prefer to WO while the kids are sleeping, or dad is here to watch them, BUT, I have a two and four yr old, and many times I have done a WO with them in the room. A few times I have told them to they are too close, but it usually works out somewhat. They are pretty good, and usually try to join in.
It is doable most days, just try, and even if you have to take a couple few seconds breaks, atleast you are doing it.
Good luck, I know the feeling!

My kids are 5 and 2 and I work out before they get up in the morning, although the five year old isn't any trouble if he gets up early. He just watches TV or plays on the computer (or sometimes sits and talks to me until I am finished).

I have a 5 and a 2 year old and I have no extra space so they are around while I work out.

When my 2 year old was younger I would work out before she got up in the morning or feed her breakfast so she had to be in her high chair.

There were and are interuptions and I do use that pause button a lot, but I still manage to get my workouts in. It is getting better now that the girls play with one another and I KNOW that I am setting a good example when they want to join me. Hopefully soon I will have a larger home so I don't have to work out in our livingroom/dining room/kitchen!
