working out with a toothache?!?!

Has anyone on here experienced working out with extreme tooth pain?
I went to the dentist last week Thursday and had some dental work done on 2 of my teeth. Afterwards i was ok. I experienced no pain at all, except your occasional throbbing pain. On Monday i went to the gym and noticed i was experiencing more pain that was becoming unbearable. I began popping Motrins like they were candy. It got to the point where the pain was keeping me up at night in tears! Needless to say, i haven't worked out since Monday evening because the pain was so severe. I went back to the dentist today (to a new dentist) and found out that the dentist that did work on my teeth last Thursday, did something wrong and it caused an infection in my tooth and i now have to get a root canal!
I feel extremely guilty that i haven't been able to do my workout in 3 days and i just wanted to know If anyone else on here has ever experienced this. Have you ever been in such sever pain that it's put you out of commission? Unable to do any type of workout at all? Please tell me i'm not the only one. And can you give me some advice? :(

Hello. I'm so sorry that you are going through this. I work for a dental office. I know that there are some RDA's that visit this site and I hope that they chime in, because I'm not an RDA. I deal with insurance. I'm curious what kind of work did you have done? Not to be judgemental towards dentists but I've noticed in this buisness that there are Dentists that will say you need to get something done even though you really don't HAVE to have it. I would actually call your previous Dentist and give him/her the chance to see what went wrong or get a second opinion. I can never say this enough check to see if there are any complaints on file for the Dentist that you plan on seeing. Yes, research your Dentist, or better yet, ask friends and family for referrals. Root Canals are no walk in the park and depending on your situation will often need a post and crown which can bring the cost up to $3,000.00 and even more. I feel for you and hope you feel better, but don't feel bad these things happen. Be happy that it isn't a broken bone or something that can put you out of comission for longer. The best of luck to you.

I have been going through the same thing, and my dentist prescribed stronger meds than Motrin thank goodness! You should have called and insisted on seeing him right away, infection is nothing to mess with.In my case I took the meds, the antibiotics, he finished the root canals and now I am waiting for my permanent crowns. I worked out because I had the pain under control. All my best to you, that tooth stuff is awful!

Oh my gosh, stop feeling guilty right now. You're in pain. You're not supposed to work out if you're in pain. Just remember: Exercise should be fun and good for your body. It's supposed to relieve stress. Exercising in such pain is just the opposite, and it won't do you any good (it may even take your body longer to recover from the illness/injury). Don't do that to yourself.

This is the time to baby yourself and heal. Rent some movies, get some good books from the library, and rest. You'll be back in the saddle in no time.
:)

yea my doctor prescribed Vicodin for the pain after i called him in tears! I'm just afraid to start taking it because i hear it's a very addictive drug. But it looks like i'll have to put my fears behind me & take it.

Don't be afraid of the Vicodin. I've taken it on and off for stuff in the past ~ it's a wonderful painkiller, and you won't get addicted from just a few days of it. You can even break the pills in half if you feel they're too strong.

Well, i had a cavity in one of my molars & i went to have it filled but the first dentist i went to, told me the cavity ran deeper than i thought & that he was gonna have to drill it, clean it out & fill it. He told me i should probably get a root canal, but that he was gonna try and save my tooth from having to get a root canal. I should have just got the root canal from the beginning because he basically charged me a copayment for a tooth that he messed up and caused an infection!!!
So when i went back to my dentist today for him to check what was wrong, he said "Oh, it looks like the tooth has become infected". I didn't have no infection last week so it seems it was something he did wrong. Then he sent me to a root canal specialist who put me in even MORE pain & started the root canal procedure. That was a copayment of $160 plus the price of the antibiotics i have to take for the infection!!! So thank God in heaven i'm not feeling much pain now. But i have an insanely high bill now.
So it seems to me you're right about some dentists doin work that isn't necessary. As you can see, mine did. If i would have just gotten the root canal in the first place, it would have saved a lotof time, money & unnecessary pain.
Sorry so long but thanks for listening to me vent. :)

Thanks so much LaughingWater. I really needed to hear that.. That it's okay not to feel guilty from not working out, especially while in pain. And i guess i can try the Vicodin. but tell me, what side effects did you suffer from?

Let me preface by saying I get stress related chest pains and have MVP which causes palpitations and little bouts of funny chest "feelings" that will wake me up at night.

Vicodin can cause some funny chest related pains, palpitations, etc. I took a dose for some bad lower back pain and I didn't like the feeling I got at all. BUT THAT WAS ME - we all respond differently.

Just make sure to read the side affects and if you feel something isn't right then call your doc. Many people use vicodin and it really does take the pain away.

I liked the suggestion of taking half a dose. That will let you see what affects you may have without taking a full one. You can always add the other half if you feel fine.

Vicodin just makes me sleepy. Breaking the pill in half will give you pain relief while reducing that wazzed out feeling. It can cause constipation in some people. I'm not sure how long one has to take it to experience that particular side effect. I'm thinking a couple of days shouldn't be a big deal.

Regarding infections, many times they just happen, and it's nothing you or your dentist did. It sucks though. Once you're all healed, you should treat yourself to some really great ice cream!

I was on Lortabs for three months after my hip surgery, I took exactly as directed, I did not become addicted! That only happens with addictive types who abuse the drug, doubling the dosage, etc...these are drugs that do what they are supposed to do, take away the pain. Use them as directed and you will be fine.

And yes, have that ice cream, thats exactly what I did during my tooth drama!:)

"He told me i should probably get a root canal, but that he was gonna try and save my tooth from having to get a root canal."

This is not uncommon in Dental offices. Dentists, especially Dentists who do not do their own root canals will try to save the tooth to prevent the patient from unecessary pain. Here's the thing though, in Dentistry as in medicine nothing is a guarantee, we'd like to wish there was but there is no guarantee. Filling can grow, if not taken care of right away and a root canal treated tooth can end up getting extracted. If you think $160 for the root canal is high just wait till they tell you what your portion for the crown and post will be. Even with dental insurance it can cost you thousands. Sometimes, this isn't explained to patients, but most often a root canal treated tooth will need assitance to keep the tooth stable, ie. a crown or post. I hate going to the dentist. I truly, truly, hate it. It's weird that I work for one but I hate even getting my teeth clean. I guess my advice to everyone out there is get your cleanings 2 times a year and make sure you get the x-rays so that the Dr. can check the root tips or canals for infection. I hope you at least feel better.
Oh one more thing that most people don't know. Specialists have costs more. up to 30% more than a general practice dentist but if you do want to go to a general practice dentist for a root canal or extraction make sure that it is a repretable dentist and one that has been doing it for a while. Some general practice dentists will do it just for the money even though they are not qualified.
