Working out while sick

Do you do this?

I am sick, I am thinking another sinus infection, third so far in 2007.

I feel crappy all the time, not necessarily worse when working out. But when I am working out and breathing heavy, it feels like my throat is on fire. That part is pretty painful...

So should I work out tomorrow, or sleep in? Tomorrow is legs/butt day...

katie,

i feel like i could have written what you wrote. i have been suffering from sinus infections this year. so far i have had one jan, march, and now. i just went to the ent and he thinks the allergist had me on the wrong antibiotic. he will be dealing witht he problem from now on. i will be on new meds and a nasal wash with antibiotics. i get bronchitis with the infections so severe, that i have to sleep sitting up. my workouts suffer terribly. last nite was the first nite in almost 3 weeks that i was able to do cardio. you have to be careful. if you have asthma (i have exercise induced asthma), you can trigger an attack.

i would suggest light stuff. i mostly walked and within a few days of starting the antibiotics and getting the coughing somewhat under control, i start some light weights. now i have to start all over again to build up to where i was. i hope we can get this under control. it is very frustrating, i know.

How about yoga or pilates? I would do Cathe's Stetch Max on days like this, but I think pilates is even better. I am going to get some pilates DVDs to do on days off.

I actually just got over the same exact thing!! Claritin D worked wonders for me and I felt better in about three days. Also try gargling with warm salt water for your throat. As for working out, I know I probably should have been resting but....I kept working out. I just kept my routine a little bit easier then regular days. I always feel like maybe I can sweat out my sickness...unless I'm extremely sick..then i rest. Hope that helps and i hope you feel better!

If misery loves company, count me in.
I've been sick for over a week now. I've gotten in 2 spinning workouts (not at top exhertion) in 10 days (and I usually workout almost everyday). I'm so SICK of being SICK.

I have not been to the doctor. Maybe I have a sinus infection??? I guess I should go after the weekend. What are the symptoms of a sinus infection? I just have a stopped up nose and drainage. Sometimes I feel like I have a fever, but when I take my temp, it's normal. My throat sometimes hurts, but mostly only in the morning.

sounds like you have something. i have the feeling of having fever but i dont. you blow your nose and it is green. you are stuffed up, headaches and pressure in the sinus area. i always get a cough which turns into bronchitis if not treated early enough. this is due to post nasal drip.

you should go to a doctor for a proper diagnosis.

Let your body's energy go towards healing rather than working out.

Do you use a Neti pot (some call it a 'nose bidet')? If not, you might try it. Rinsing your nasal cavity daily with a saline solution can help prevent sinus problems (you can also add Neti wash, which contains zinc, or collodial silver, which is an antiseptic, for short periods). It can also help those with nasal allergies (by rinsing out pollen and other irritants).
