Working out on Sundays

Does anyone else have a problem working out on Sunday or the weekend in general? Ideally, I would like to take only one rest day during the week. Lately, I have been taking off on Thursday and I really like that because I can sleep in that day and I know the weekend is close.

Here's the problem. I can't get myself to workout on Sunday. What is the deal? I do fine on Saturday and really look forward to doing my "long" run that morning. I just can't motivate myself to get moving on Sunday morning. Then I get involved in other stuff and don't workout and eat kind of badly. I really feel like if I did workout on Sunday that I would eat much better and be more productive. Why isn't this enough motivation?

Does this happen to anyone else? Do you know of any mind games I can play with myself to get my butt in gear :) ? Any help is appreciated!

I think this is one of those things you are going to have to make a habit. The more you do it, the more you "make" yourself do it, the easier it will get with time. Before long, you will have trouble NOT working out on Sunday!

I see that you are planning on running a 10K at the end of May. Perhaps if you make your Sunday workout part of that long term goal it might help to motivate you.

Personally, I sometimes have to REALLY push myself to get going if I'm not working toward anything other than physical fitness.

Sorry....no help here. Sunday is my FAVORITE day to workout, as I usually have time to do a long workout, 2.5 hours or so. I also try to force myself to take 1 rest day a week, but lately I've been opting for a "recovery" workout and doing some light cardio on my rest day. That's odd that Sunday is that day that's like that. I might feel like staying in bed on a Monday, but I usually feel like working out on Saturdays or Sundays.

Good luck with finding what works for you. Perhaps you need a few new DVDs to motivate you.....!! They always work for me !

Karin...not sure if I can help much. I started doing my long runs on Sunday years ago, so now it is a habit. I do share that habit with my sister and another good friend. My thinking is that if most running races are on Sunday then it is good to train on Sunday...:)

Hi Karin,

Yup - I do. I try to take off one day a week and I like it to be Sundays, but sometimes since I work half days on Fridays I'll sleep a little longer b/c I think I'll do my workout later because I have all afternoon. Rarely happens. So then Friday ends up being my day off (I'm trying REALLY hard to change that) and then I have to work out on Sundays and I hate it! Although now that the weather is getting better and cycling season is here, I have a friend who likes to ride early Sunday mornings before church. That might save me on Sundays until next November or so. :)

Oh - and if I get involved in too many other things on Sunday, forget wanting to work out!

It really is about making it a habit. I have come to love and savour my Sunday morning workouts. It's the day I can do mish moshes I've seen here and want to try or put something new together myself. I can indulge in back to back workout then take a good half hour to really streeeeetch my body out. Something else I love about Sunday morning workouts is my 3 DD's getting up one by one and coming downstairs to see what Mama's up to, they say things like 'Go Mommy!' and 'You can do it!' and it makes me smile every time:D

I tend to like to rest on a Saturday or a Sunday too but only because then I'm not starting or ending a rotation mid-week.

I don't mind working out on Sundays...in fact...sometimes I wish my rest days didn't fall on the weekend just because I have more time then!

Especially on Sundays cause they are such BLAH days for me...I look forward to working out on days when nothing else is going on. Even more so now that I can go to the gym cause it gets me out of the house on a day when I would normally stay inside all day long just because there's nothing to do...:)

Thanks everyone for your kind words and inspiration. I am going to aim for doing 40 min on the elliptical trainer to iClimb 3 this weekend. That isn't too much to ask, right :) ? I am also going to recruit a friend like Carole suggested so that I am more motivated. Of course I will be thinking of all of you working out and try to join you!! Too bad the weekend is so far away x( .

I think not wanting to workout on Sunday may be an ingrained habit from childhood: a lesson that your subconcious has learned that "Sunday is a day of rest." At least it used to be for me (I also associated Sundays with gloomy weather and Godzilla movies! but that doesn't affect workouts!).

I personally like to use my weekends to workout. I love the fact that I have a bit more freedom in choosing when to workout, vs. most weekdays.

I often will 'catch up' on workouts by doing longer workouts, or even (more rarely) two workouts in one day (like this past Sunday, when I did both P90 Masters Sculpt 5-6 and ---after an hour 'refueling' break--P90 Masters Cardio 5-6).

Not me, I live for my Sunday workouts. Saturdays & Sundays I spend 2 hours each in the gym doing cardio & weights. It's so nice to have the time & not have to rush through a workout or break it up into pieces the way I do during the week.

<sigh> I wish every day was Sunday.

Karin,
Well if it is any help I can not get myself going on Sundays either... See I workout during the week in the morning while the kids are at school so on the weekend I get involved in all the other "stuff". The only way I would accomplish a workout on the weekends would require me getting up VERY early before everyone else so I make sure my Mon-Fri workouts are very productive knowing I will be taking the weekend off.

I used to be the same way and it used to be my rest day, but I have started making Friday's my rest day since I can do longer workouts on the weekends. Once you begin to make a routine of it it really does become habit.

I think it is harder to get workouts in on both Sat and Sunday because with house and yard projects (and running errands and cleaning) there is always so much to do on weekends esp when the weather is nicer. If I don't get up early and get a workout in first thing in the morning it doesn't usually happen although many of our projects definitely qualify as functional fitness. But sometimes having just that one day when you don't need to set the alarm is great too! You could do a non-video workout like a bike ride or something on Sundays.

I usually have a really hard time wanting to workout on Sundays but once I get started I seem to find all kinds of energy. I think its the mindset that we are in that Sundays should be rest days. I'm Catholic. LOL!
