Working out on carpet

I've been working out on a carpeted surface now for about 8 months or so and I was recently completly shocked at how much higher and better I was at plyo stuff on a hard wood surface!! I knew that the carpet was "sucking" some of my inertia but I had no idea how much. I was wondering if any of you had experienced this going from carpet to a harder surface. Should I not feel so bad that I can't always keep up with the plyo stuff because my carpet is stealing my thunder (and lightning) or am I just kidding myself? What do you all think??

I tried to do KPC at my daughter's house over the summer on her more plush carpet, and I could hardly get through it! My carpet at home in my workout area is more of the indoor/outdoor type. Just this morning I was thinking of getting puzzle mats for the room. I'm thinking it would help save the life of the carpet from my continual dripping sweat and be better for my joints in the high impact. What do you think?

Well we recently just got hardwood floor added in. Before it was carpet. I had to make some adjustments though. Sometimes I need to put down a rug so I can do planks, push ups, etc. because my knees would be screaming if I didn't. I make even more clickity clacky noises while doing KPC between the sound of my knees and my weight hitting the floor after jumping jacks, etc. Pretty fun, I think!

I have just moved house and had to go from hard wood floors which I loved to carpet which I hate and yes, carpet does suck up some of your height, rebound and energy. Definitely.

Carolyn: where did you find this harder surface? Did you buy some special flooring for your home workout area? What did you get? I need to lay something ahrder on top of this carpet now!!

I went to Target and bought the black (on both sides) puzzle mats. I got 4 to a pack for $15 and bought 2 packs. I bought them to prolong the life of my knees and yes I do notice that I feel my workout more than when I was just on the carpet.:) Definitely invest in these if nothing else. Your knees will love you for it.:D

I also recently moved from hard wood floors to an apartment with super plush carpet. i found that the carpet was too risky for my knees and I bought some puzzle mats off Ebay and are looking forward to using those!

Are you putting the puzzle mats on top of your carpet? I was just practicing my plyos in a gym so I don't have a solution.
Carolyn

You link them together and just put them on top of the carpet. Make sure you get the all black ones as someone else in a different post suggested. They said something about their bodies sticking to the colored ones.

I flipped my colored ones over and use the black side. I didn't want to feel like I was working out in a kindergarten room.

Also, I put together 30 mats in a 5x6 pattern. It makes the perfect-sized workout area. I have a carpet scrap I use for floor work/sit-ups/core work/etc.

Unfortunately, the cats seem to like using the mats for scratching as well. x(

I went to Dicks and bought 2x2 foam matts . I covered my floor.
I have a berber in the basement. It is much better on my knees with the jumping.
I have my dumbell rack on 2 of them to keep them from sliding. I bought the thicker ones. I figured they wouldn't wear out as easy.
Searched high and low for 10x12 Rubber matt. No luck.
It is really nice don't need a matt . Use a cut yoga matt for planks and push ups so i don;t slide when getting sweaty.
Told my husband to tear down some trees and build me a building. He just looked at me.
The look.

My opinion is they help.
Good luck.

So when you put the stuff over the carpet it doesn't create an unstable feel? I don't have the ultra short burber carpet, but my carpet isn't really long either so I'm wondering if I shouldn't have done this 8 months ago!! If this really works then my workouts will be 100% better not to mention safer!!!

Hi,

I bought the 2x2 puzzle matts at Dick's, too. I love them. I work out in my family room which has a flat, sisal carpet. Our house is on a concrete slab and doing step aerobics on the carpeted floor was bothering my knees. The matt hasn't damaged my carpet at all, it's made my workout so much easier on the old knees, and it's easy to take apart and store away when I'm finished. I highly recommend these matts.:)

So, ladies, can I just ask:

with these puzzle mats, can you do all your Cathe cardio routines on them? Step Blast and not catch your feet on the flooring? Circuit Max and not trip up?

DO they feel like they help you spring back up from plyo moves, or does it feel like you are sinking into them?

have so many questions before I go out and buy them.

Thanks!

Clare

I have always worked out on carpet; mostly because I have no other choice (well, except for the cement basement floor!). I currently have puzzle mats and a capet padding underneath a piece of berber carpet. I seem to do really well on that and it is fine on my knees. I'm tall and probably a little bit of a klutz, so I'm sure I couldn't jump much higher on wood anyway!!! LOL!!!:p

When I looked at the 2X2 puzzle matts at Dick's, I actually opened up the package and took a square out so I could stand on it. You might want to do that as well. These matts come with edge pieces so they lay nice on the floor--I don't really know how to explain it--but I've been really happy with mine. So far I've used it for basic step and some other floor aerobics and I haven't had any trouble at all. I didn't feel like I was sinking in to it.
