Work Rant....

I am just ticked off right now and need to vent, I apologize if I sound whiny, but I am really steamed right now..

I am one of 2 people in our accounting department, plus I help out other people in other areas of my office, I wear alot of hats.

Currently I am covering for the Purchasing Assistant and the Office Administrator who are off this week. Now the other entity in my department is taking a half day off tomorrow. Why? Her friend's sister died and she wants to go to the wake, which is from 2-4 and 6-8. The funeral is Saturday.

You say, "why can't she go to the 6-8 time frame tomorrow??" Because her and husband have free tickets to the baseball game tomorrow night. Tickets that she got here at work.
Now, she is not a sports fan in the least ( didn't even know the team name..), and she expects me to cover for her tomorrow afternoon.

Okay, so now that makes 3 people I am covering for, much less doing my own job.

Another kicker - She is off next week for the entire week and guess who is covering for her then?

Now, I will be off in 2 wks, but she can't be bothered to cover for me. I come back to work and clean up what is left behind when I go away for a week.

I guess the bottom line is that I feel I am really getting stuck in the lurch here because she wants to go to a ball game..

Thanks for letting me vent, whether you agree or not...

Which game? I can arrange to sit behind her and spill a big ol' stinky mug of Budweiser all over her.

Hey someone did that to me before. It was not fun at all. Now you got me thinking if it was done on purpose. Smelled like beer all night and I hate the stuff.

Yeah, let's add insult to injury...she just has to go to see the worst team in the American League...

Did I tell you I also had to cancel a doctor appt. to cover for her????

I know, more beer....

Venting is what we are here for!:D And I think you have every right to be upset. Go Beavs!

You are soooo right, beavs.

I really do believe paybacks are a b...ch!

Our company is doing a rotating layoff thing, and I am looking forward to not having to deal with this individual next week.

I can relate! I guess the worst part for me is that there's really no one to vent to who can understand! Even my husband doesn't get it as he never had to work in this type of environment. He was in the military and now he's a financial analyst, so he's never had to really deal with office politics and office jerks (I'm being nice here as I do not want to swear!)!

I feel you and I would be just as pissed but if I were you I would just cover for them with the least amount of responsibility as possible. In other words get your stuff done and just take care of what you absolutely have to. If you have to answer the phones for them take a message and move on to your stuff. That is what I do when I cover for the office manager and receptionist at the office I work for. I just take a message and tell everyone that looks for them when they'll be back. If they are responsible enough they should contact all the people that they have things pending with and let them know that they will be gone for the day. Quite frankly I know what you mean it is hard to work with people who don't share the same hard work ethic but trust me they will end up burning themselves in the end.

Exactly, I would only do the emergencies, stuff that is a MUST do and save the rest for them when they get back.

Hmmm, I'm wondering if there is a way to make this situation work for you in the long term. Is there a way that you could empower yourself to gently confront your boss about the inequity in the situation? Maybe let your boss know how indispensable you obviously are, maybe deserve a raise or an extra couple days vacation? Rather than focus on how much this sucks, maybe focus on the opportunities inherent in the situation?

Thanks for all your input. I make it a point to show my bosses just how well I can do her job and mine....hmmmm. Times are pretty tough at our company right now, but my boss made a mention of the fact that he knows I am doing things that I have not done before, and doing them well...
On the other hand, she only does her job and no one elses...

There will be a payback down the road, I am just picking my points on this.

I really shouldn't be surprised by her actions, she always acts like the world revolves around her anyways.

I am working on channeling that inner beeetch..
