why count calories burned?

I was wondering how important it is (or to you) how many calories burned? I keep reading how so many use HR monitors.
I keep a pretty good mental track on how many calories I consume.
I'm contemplating whether I should get a HR monitor or not.

i do it so that i know how much i can eat!!!!! i LOVE food... and 1200 isn't a lot of calories to eat... the more i workout... the more i can eat above those measly 1200!!!!

(that's why bike riding days are SO great!)

OK, are you saying 1,200 should be your calorie limit for the day? And if you eat, say, 400 more calories, you do an extra workout?

I think this is a bad habit to get into. Exercising specifically to burn of certain food calories can also be one sign of exercise bullemia.

Here is a website to help explain it and help you calculate your daily needs.

I agree that getting too carried away with counting calories can be a slippery slope. I suffered from anorexia for 3 years and I never want to go back to that obsessive, self-destructive behavior again!

That said, I DO think that it's good to know what your daily caloric needs are, especially if you're trying to lose weight. You basically want to eat AS MUCH as you can while still losing NO MORE than 2 (preferably 1-1.5) pounds per week. Your body has a way of adjusting to too little calories and eating only 1,200/day or less will surely come back to haunt you later when you want to eat more. I would say as an average an active woman needs around 1,800 calories a day. If you eat lots of lean protein, complex carbs (whole grains, fruit, veggies, etc.) and healthy fats you can get away with eating a lot! 1,200 calories is for birds! Eat enough and eat well!

Cheers!

I completely agree. I don't know how an active person can exist on a low-calorie diet for an extended period of time.

hmmmmmm well.... in a sense... but i don't do it that way! 1200 is my non-exercise, just sit on my butt calories.... and i do like to eat at least 1500-1600.... or more some days..... which is almost always taken care of with my morning workouts... (with the exception of p90x yoga where i barely crack 200 calories burned! however i still eat the same amount of food on those days....)

but i don't eat something and say that i then have to ride my bike X number of calories or do a cathe workout to burn extra.... that wouldn't work anyways.... cuz i workout in the morning....

when doing my long bike rides on weekends, naturally i eat more cuz not only do i need fuel during the ride.... i'm hungry after the rides! (you burn a lot of calories pedaling for 100 miles!!!!)

HOWEVER.... that IS the reason i started working out.... i would count religiously and then worked out to add more food.... or rather would work out that morning or would be out riding be bike when i was a new rider and saying "i'm riding for ice cream" (fat free kind!) people thought i was kidding! but now it's more a "way of life" and i have my calories down where unless it's a treat or cheat i know what i can eat with my workouts...

i'm kinda babbling... am i making ANY sense? basically it all boils down to if i workout i can eat more... if i don't workout... i should only eat 1200 calories or i gain weight!

that's not even bringing in all the health benefits and muscle-tone, etc.... that exercising gives.... but a biggie is that i do get to eat more!
