Why can't I just be content...

with less food? Augh!

So I'm back on the workout wagon after slacking off for a few weeks.

Back to counting WW points, watching portion sizes, etc., too.

Bleh. I want more food! Baby carrots just aren't doing it and neither are little portions of other healthy foods like almonds and such.

I want to eat all day, like a steam shovel, just stuffing my face.

Maybe I'm crazy from the heat.

Oh my gosh, I LOVE those baked Cheetos. They taste like the REAL thing! Sorry can't help in the steam-shovel department. I struggle with my shovel too!

I would LOVE to be able to workout long enough to support the food I like to eat, but there are not enough hours in the day... :+ So, I'm with ya on the WW and getting back under control. I stupidly bought pistacheos - I can eat a whole boatload of those and not realize how many I eat. Today they are on my banned list.

Eating fewer calories doesn't have to mean 'eating less food' if you choose foods that are nutrient dense but low in calories (vs. calorie-dense foods, like nuts, that add up calories very quickly).

I wouldn't be happy eating small portions of food either. But there are foods you can eat larger portions of (that take up more room in your stomach and help with satiety) that aren't hi-cal: huge salads (take an entire head of romaine lettuce and add some other chopped veggies and a light dressing), foods high in water content (slice up a whole cucumber, a red pepper, and make some low-fat hummus--with reduced amounts, or even omitting, tahini and/or oil), broth-based soups (watch sodium content if they are store-bought), smoothies.

(For a visual idea of how you can eat more for the same amount of calories or less, page through "Picture-Perfect Weight Loss," which has side-by-side photos of food choices for various calorie amounts.)

Oh, I hear ya too. I've got years of 'Prevention' articles and 'Eat Up Slim Down' recipes in my head; I know everything about volumetrics, healthy fats, fiber, water, etc, etc, etc...And my favorite thing to do is ignore all of it. The queen of sabotage, dutifully working to undo any caloric burn achieved by the day's workout. I decided today I'm going to accept that my eating-right 'skills' will have to be 'developed' long term and it is perfectly okay to fall off the wagon, which I'm sure I will. The thing is, I've got skills, I'll do wonderfully for weeks or months at a time and then I switch to being a gluttonous self-saboteur for weeks at a time. oy ve. This is my biggest challenge at the moment.

Who can be? :p That's one of the things I loved about Atkins--once you found a zero carb food you could eat as much of it as you wanted. Now I'm counting cals & it's irritating the hell outta me. It's amazing how fast you get to 1500. And my stomach is growling all the time.

Ladies like us have an even tougher time b/c of our activity levels. I can do the steam shovel thing too. I HAVE done the steam shovel thing! (even though I frequently get comments about having an eating disorder)

The only relief I get is knowing I have a "binge" day once a week. That way when I'm sitting at my desk fantasizing about pizza & chocolate--now my fantasy will include them being stacked on a steam shovel, thank you very much--I know I'll be able to indulge at some point in the near future.

We do *know* what we're suppose to do, don't we? But I'm tired of eatin' like a fricken rabbit...

Lettuce and cucumbers will only take you so far.

I want chocolate, banana-nut muffins, and blueberry pancakes to take me the rest of the way...heehee!:p

P.S. I do the one binge day thing too. Only my binge days lately have been leaking into 48 and 72 hour stretches. Yikes!

I second kathryn's recommendation of the PPWL book - excellent! My personal plan includes 6 meals that amount to about 1424 calories 6 days a week, and one pig-out day. Two of those meals are 18 oz. salads. This works because my weight is steady, and I don't feel like cheating EVER because I'm satisfied on my strict days, and know that the pig-out day comes around once a week. I must say that it took a long time to work out this magic (for me) formula. That's why you have to try everything & come up with what works for you.

Oh boy, I'm never content! I love food, especially different and ethnic foods, it's fun trying new stuff, and I feel so disappointed and left out if I can't. It's not the daily snacking that gets me as much as the over the top eating when I'm at a restaurant or on vacation, etc.

Curious about the posters who mentioned a binge day, are you still losing weight doing this? I really want to drop about 10 more pounds (although, I could stand to lose more), and I just can't get there, I spend all week eating well, lose a pound, then have 1 off day and bam! 2.5 pounds back on. 1 step foward, 2 steps back!

I do 3-4 weight workouts (currently GS) and about 3 cardio workouts a week.

Yes, I had a binge day on atkins & I have one now on the abs diet (in fact the abs diet guy insists on it, w/the philosophy that any diet that doesn't have something to look forward to is doomed to failure). It might slow down the weight loss process but I think it's true--you need some guilty pleasure to stick to a diet.

One thing that I've done and I think many of you have done it too, it just seems like common sense, is to get rid of all fattening foods in the house. Easy for me b/c I live alone, I can see how this would be a problem for those w/families, esp. kids.

Anyway, I was having problems b/c I kept falling asleep on the couch, only to wake up standing in the kitchen w/half a bag of Reese's PB cups already in my tummy. It was either get rid of the stuff or keep unconsciously sabotaging myself. It's definitely helped. Now my dessert is a banana w/PB and you know what? It's just as good! OK, not JUST as good, but ALMOST as good. ;-)

And I just shop for my binge days ON my binge days. If I have anything left over I bring it to work & let someone else have it.

I hear ya on that! I can't keep anything in the house. At night, I'll eat anything appealing that's in the house, it's ridiculous, actually pathetic. During the day, I can resist snacking at the office. I tried keeping the natural PB on hand for snacks with apples, but I ate the majority of the jar in 4 days, it tastes too good to me. I don't have kids either, so it certainly is easier to just not have it around.

I'm going to have to look into factoring an actual "cheat" day into my diet, instead of allowing an "off" day, spread into an "off" weekend.

Thanks!

I kind of did that - I figured the weekly allotment of calories I can get away with to maintain my weight & actually figured out the # of calories I can eat on my pig-out day. I was able to spread it out from 5PM on Friday until whenever I go to bed on Saturday. It used to be only Saturday with the same # of calories, but I've tricked myself into one full day plus an evening. This is even easier to handle as far as having to be "good" between pig-out days.

Sa-Th I eat (or at least try to eat) just 25 WW points. Friday is my binge day, and I was able to lose weight with a once-a-week binge day.

Like Laura-Max, I only shop for my binge day on my binge day. And it is the day my DH and I go out to eat. And the food I eat has to be gone by the end of the day - no leftovers dragging on into Saturday and Sunday.
