Why am I so HUNGRY?

SRP

Cathlete
I have been just starving to death lately, but I've been eating the same things I usually do. Last night, my stomach was growling and empty just one hour after a very decent dinner. This morning, I woke at 2 a.m., ready to devour everything in the kitchen. I made myself wait until my usual 5 a.m. breakfast, when I ate TWO pieces of peanut butter toast plus some fruit. I was hungry before I got to work.

Sometimes this happens at TTOTM, and I figure it's just another way the hormones have devised to torture me. This is not that time. Anybody else go through ravenous periods for no good reason?

Yes, I do. It seems I have the same problem. I'm actually gaining weight because of it (a little). I get so hungry I feel like I'm going to pass out. I eat every 3-3.5 hours too!! LOL

I know I take a good multivitamin from GNC and I sometimes wonder if it could make you hungrier, as I know physicians who have been known to prescribe High Potentcy vitamins for the elderly when they lose their appetites.

I know I once read somewhere that exercise was supposed to actually supress your appetite, but that doesn't happen in me.

Hi Shannon!

Yeah, I go through this as well, but I can usually point mine to changing the intensity of my workouts. Sometimes I haven't changed anything about my workouts and go through a couple of days of being more hungry at night/morning than usual. Have you changed anything with your workouts? Upped your weights, etc.???

LOL, you must be reading my mind today. I've been starving today. Already I had oatmeal, a 4 egg white omelet, now yogurt w/ blueberries. However, I'm pretty sure it's due to very intense workouts the last couple days. What are your workouts like? Also, I do get that way during time of month, too. What's a daily menu like for you? Are you eating enough? Just some thoughts here :)

Hi Shannon,

I'm not a nutritionist, but I'm wondering if you have enough fiber in your diet. Try increasing your fiber content and see if that doesn't help. Also, have your tried 5 or 6 smaller feedings? This is what I do and it seems to stave off the hunger attacks. By all means, if you're hungary eat something. Have snacks that include a high quality carb and a protein.

IMO it's from intense exercise. I do about an hour of pretty intense cardio almost every morning, & I weight train three nights a week, & I do yoga & pilates on the weekends. I always shock the heck out of people when we go out to eat--I order like 3 courses & they're like no way are you gonna fit all that in your little body & I'm like just watch me...........LOL! And you should see me after a leg workout, I'm shoving food down my pie hole as if I'll never have the chance to eat again.

If it's a concern to you I'd recommend eating your largest meal of the day immediately after your workout, while your metabolism is still up & running, that way you can burn most of it off.

Let's see -
First, yesterday's calorie intake was less than I expected - I actually had a nearly 500-calorie deficit, which is what they say you need to lose weight. No wonder I never diet. I'd starve.

But that doesn't explain everything.

A regular day for me goes something like:
Breakfast: PB toast or yogurt - with fruit. Orange juice.
Lunch: leftovers from dinner. I cook double.
Dinner: Could be beans and cornbread, tuna and pasta (no sauce, just herbs and olive oil), potato or grain (millet, rice, etc) with veggies. Sometimes I eat salmon, when I remember to defrost it. I almost always include cheese with my meal.

No, I haven't increased my exercise within the last month, but yes, since I did increase it about two months ago, I did notice a change, but have compensated/adjusted.

Diet changes in the works: trying to get more leafy greens, more soy, and more protein. I want to cut back on fat a little, but a whole lot.

I would think I have enough fiber. I eat lots of whole grain products, which includes homemade breads and muffins with bran or wheat germ added.

Thanks, everyone!

I think you're right on in that you need more protein, especially with your breakfast. Without protein to start me off I usually stay hungry all morning and keep eating and eating. Also, add at least 2 snack times in there. It is a long time to go between meals for your body. A good rule of thumb is try to have at least a protein source and a complex carb at each meal. You can add your fruits, veg, fats in where you deem appropriate, as long as it balances out at the end of the day. This is not carved in stone by any means but will help you get through the day feeling more satiated.

Well I don't know, I did read that if you don't get the vitamins and minerals your body needs, that you will be hungry until you get them.
Could be too you need to up your protein just a bit....

Maybe it's because it's nearing Autumn/Winter. I always get extra hungry arround this time. I reckon it's your bodies inbuilt sensers trying to get you to lay down extra fat supplies for the cold months. Just a thought. :)

Re: the leg workouts.....as I recall, the days I was famished this week were both on leg workout days!!

Also, I tend to agree with the above statement about the Autumn/Winter thing. I've heard this before somewhere.

I am glad to see that others have this problem too. I have been starving all week and I haven't changed a thing and it isn't TTOM. Nights are the hardest but last night I decided to do some cleaning and I chewed gum. Yesterday during the day I had a diet pop to try to kill the cravings. I did better than usual since I would normally eat everything in sight and start over again in a few days. I am planning on do small things to keep the cravings down without blowing my calorie count for the day. My co-worker also said she is experiencing this and she doesn't diet or exercise. Maybe it is the change of season. Vicky

Great. Am I supposed to put on a couple of inches of fat and find a nice cave to hibernate in?

Did you know your motabolism runs high at TTOTM? Are you perchance burining more calories than you realize or experiencing an increase in metabolic function because of you lifestyle? You diet may need a slight overhaul. :)
