Why a 6" step nowadays?

Kathy02

Cathlete
I was just wondering why it is that you use a 6" step now, where you used to use an 8". Do you always use an 6" now, or only while teaching?
I know that you are a very buisy person, so if anyone else can share some insight I would love it! Thank you!

RE: Why a 6

Hi, Kathy -- I saw this same type of question posted awhile back. It should still be around here somewhere - did you try to do a search for it on the boards?

I used to set my step height at 8 to 10 inches! I still can't believe what I did in my younger years!! Now that I'm older, and I tend to have bum knees, I've found that (for myself), I can still get a very effective workout with a 6 inch step (and less chance to over-stress my knees).:)

RE: Why a 6

Thank you for your help! I was just so curious, and have been wondering for some time now and finally remembered to ask. I had also heard somthing about it being a knee injury that she had, but wanted to know exactly why. I will try the search and see what I come up with. I am sure I wasn't the first to ask that question. Not that I don't trust what you said Xenafan, I'm sure you're right, But I just want to see if the other person knew what they were talking about or not. You know rule out rumors and what not! tahnks again!:D

I know that in some tapes, you can see the scars where Cathe had some ACL repair done (from a skiing accident), but she was still using and 8"step at the time. I recall her saying about a 6" step that she got the same intensity workout as she had previously with 8"(but I don't recall it being tied directly to her having had children). I'm not sure if Cathe said this, or if I read it elsewhere, but someone stated that you should use the lowest step height you can to get the intensity you want.

RE: Why a 6

Hi Kathy! I lowered my height years ago after recovering from an injury and found that I was still very winded and working in my training zone on 6 inches so I stayed there. I pretty much always use 6 inches now. Occasionally I will do 8 inches just to shake things up a bit but overall, I have found that I stay in my aerobic zone at 6 inches and I enjoy stepping at that height mostly :)

RE: Why a 6

Wow, thank you Cathe for clearing things up for me. I really didn't expect to hear from you, just because you are so buisy right now. Thank all of you guys that where trying to help me as well I really appreciate it!
I like that you use a 6" step now, because I'm more comfortable with the 6" as well. This way I don't feel like I have to get up to an 8" to be in really good shape.:)
Thanks again!

Kathy

RE: Why a 6

I had used a 6" for several years, then earlier this year hurt my ankle and dropped to a 4" for awhile now. At first it felt weird, then I realized that I could do a whole workout and do the power moves and still get a good workout. I tried a 6" for variety and almost killed myself forgetting to step up. Just a warning to those who change their step level.
