Who is familiar with Québec? Need travel advice

I'm going to a conference in Québec in July, and would like to find a hotel cheaper than the conference hotel, but within a couple of blocks (walking distance when carrying handouts and other "stuff" for my presentation).

I've tried looking on some web sites, but it's hard to tell where the hotels are. The activities will be held in the Hilton. ANy suggestions for nice, cheap hotels in close range?

Also, any suggestions for good places to find vegan food?

The conference planners suggest flying to Montréal, then taking the bus or train to Québec. Any comments on that? (bus vs. train? a way to spend a few hours in Montréal before going to Québec, and not having to haul luggage all around?)

TIA

Hi Kathryn! I can't help you with the hotel question, but thought I'd tell you that you are going to the province of Quebec, but your conference is in Quebec City. I've been to Montreal a couple of times and it's beautiful, but I hear QC is even more lovely. It is primarily French speaking; Montreal has a larger English speaking population, I believe. I would love to go there some time! Have a great time!

Cheers,
Sandra

Try Hotels.com. They list shops, parks, etc are close by to the hotels you are staying. You can also sort hotels by distance from certain landmarks in the city you will be staying. The prices aren't bad either. I used it to book my hotel in Montreal.
I haven't been to Quebec City, so I can't comment on vegan restaurants, but Montreal is a great place to venture. If you get a chance to spend time there, I'm sure you'll have good time.

Have fun!

Hi TIA

I used to live in Quebec. Are you goin to Quebec City as part of your conference? If not, it is several hours away from Montreal about 3 hours by train. Just wanted you to know. If your taking a train contact http://www.viarail.ca/ to plan your trip. As for hotels, I would use Hotels.com you'll get a better deal. As for site seeing in Quebec City be sure to visit old Quecbec city for the architecture alone, especially Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral, le Chateau Frontenac (even if its just for tea) and of course the amazing restaurants and shops. It is a beautiful city. There are a lot of parks in the area such as Parc de la Chute-Montmorency you may want to visit their website at http://www.sepaq.com/En/index.cfm?Reseau=CT&Module=&Etablissement=PCM&Page=BIEN&Activite=#0. And in Montreal, there's really a lot to do. It really depends on what you want to do, try visiting http://www.tourisme-montreal.org/B2C/00/default.asp to plan your trip. But Notre-Dame Basilica of Montréal is beautiful church, just for the architecture.
As for English French, French of course is the language of Quebec but most people speak English especially if they work in the tourist industry. If you plan ahead, you really can't go wrong, both cities are beautiful. I hope this helps a little.

It was one of my nicest vacation -- combining the Quebec Marathon with a 10 day visit in this wonderful city.
So many things to see, I'm sure you'll have a great time. I don't really remember any vegan restaurant, but I have to tell you that the food is absolutely outstanding.
We spent the last few nights in the famous Hotel Frontinec -- what an experience! I'd gladly go back for a second vacation! :)

Yes,the conference itself is in Québec city.
No problem with French (which I'm looking forward to because I teach it and am fluent).
Thanks for the links, Erin. That will help me plan.
