Which Cathe DVDs would you take to Paris?

This coming Saturday, I am going to Paris on a business trip for 5 nights/6 days. Aside from the stress of 1: trying to fit all my stuff in a carry-on so as to avoid checking my luggage; 2: taking a 6 1/2 hour plane ride; and MOST IMPORTANTLY 3: leaving my DD for this length of time. Okay, so #3 probably should have been #1!!;-) I am trying to decide which Cathe DVDs should come with me.

I have no idea what my room looks like so I am assuming I don't have ton of space to work with. I'm thinking KPC and SJP for the Hi/Lo section, for sure. Any other suggestions? What about Drill Max? I could probably do some of the drills.

I was considering taking this as a recovery week, but since there will be no counting of the calories on this trip, I figured I'd better get creative and try to squeeze in some workouts.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have just about all of Cathe's DVDs.

Melissa, you could always take CM, SM, and KM. Those were the only other work outs I could think of.

Will you have any free time during the day? If so you can do A LOT of walking in Paris. If your only "down time" is at night, walking (unless you have a group) wouldn't be an option I would take. When I was there in 2002 our room was quite small and I don't think I would have been able to do a workout in there. Maybe Stretch Max or Core Max but not SJP, KPC or Drill Max. Will you have access to a gym? That's another option.

As for food I found the portions were much smaller so I wouldn't worry about eating too much. Enjoy your trip, don't worry about food/exercise too much...just have fun!

I would say take a couple of the workouts that do not require any equipment, so KM, KPC, CK etc. are all good. If the room is too small then you won't need to use them, but they are not heavy so it's no hassle to take them, just in case.

Paris is a great place to walk and if I have free time I would prefer to be out and about sightseeing. You will get a good workout just walking the streets of Paris. There are places that are hilly or have long steps for extra cardio; I think the Sacre Coeur is on top of a hill and trying climbing steps to the top of the Eiffel Tower.

Have a lovely time in Paris.

Unless you're staying in a really expensive hotel I don't think you'll have any space to workout in your room. You could lie down in the hall to do some abs but that would be about it! ;)

I doubt you'd be able to see the TV and find a space to work out. Take a week off, enjoy Paris and the food (and you can eat healthily there anyway). You won't see many overweight people and Parisians don't spend their lives in the gym!

Have a great trip. :7

Like everyone else said, Paris is incredible for walking. Also, you don't mention where you're staying (I assume a hotel) but wouldn't it bother the guests staying in the room below you if you do a workout that has a lot jumping in it? I'm just imagining those forward leaps in drillmax...I'd suggest non-impact, non-weighted workouts like the KM leg drills, or the floorwork from GS legs (with the bands) Or do the ankle weight work in B&G, L&G or PLB with the band. You don't want to have ankle wts in your carry on! For upper body, you could do push-ups for your chest and then use the bands for back, biceps, triceps, and shoulders. You can also do squats with the bands. Also, the lunge, squat exercise from B&G or the plie, curtsey squat from L&G are non-weighted and killer. Bring a core tape too and you'd be set. Don't miss a minute of Paris though--it's such a beautiful city. HTH and have a great time!

Chocolate IS the answer, regardless of the question.

>Do US DVDs work in France?

Yes, I think that the British and Euro DVD's are on a different coding system, so you might not be able to use your DVD's unless you bring a portable player.

As someone else said, though, you might just try walking to get your exercise! Have you been to Paris before? It's one of my favorite cities and very walking-friendly. You could walk all over and stop at a cafe to enjoy the people-watching!

And I'd agree not to worry too much about eating! Enjoy your time there, enjoy the wonderful food, and be sure to eat a pain chocolat for those of us back home!

Hope you have a wonderful time!!

I agree with the majority: forget the workouts, and use the time you would have spent on them walking. You could also rent a bike. If you feel the need to supplement, you could always do some squats, lunges, push-ups, tricep dips, crunches and planks in your room.

But really: take advantage of the free time you have and use it to plan some walks around town. Or take the train to Versailles, or visit the Louvre (you could spend hours walking through there!).

You will be walking everywhere! When I was there, I ate like the locals and walked like them, and actually lost weight. I would recommend the walking which is unavoidable exercise:) and crunches, pushups and a few leg lifts or wall squats in your hotel room. Trust me, you will not have the time to worry about fitting in a weight workout--I always think I will when I travel! Personally, I would not take anything...

Have fun, Paris is so great, enjoy your trip without the worries!:D

I just read in teh Washington Post travel section last Sinday (not yesterday) that renting bikes is very popular in Paris - not only as exercise, but as transportation. I will look for a link and post it later if I can find it. That is, if you are interested. ;)

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm going to stick with walking. I ended up taking a virtual tour of one of the rooms in the hotel I'll be staying at and it looks like there may be just enough room to walk around the bed...never mind any kicking, punching or crunching!! ;-)

Melissa,

For 4 years I traveled to Europe for my job and the rooms are very small, as you have now found out. I ran every morning for my exercise and walked to the shows that I was there for each day. We always tried to walk to dinner if we could (but not always possible). I would do pushups, dips and ab work in my room and also used a chair for step ups. Sometimes if the weather was really bad, I would run the stairs of the hotel if they were ones that were out of the way and wouldn't bother people. But that gets boring really fast. :)

Have a FABULOUS trip! And if you don't work out at all, don't worry about it. It's only 6 days out of your life - IN PARIS!!!

Wow! Lucky you!
I want your job, LOL.
As others have said, your DVDs most likely will not work in Europe, they use a different system. Also, European hotel rooms are smaller than American hotel rooms. The rooms I had in Paris were much smaller than any I've ever been in here....and that's standard.

That being said....I ate my way through every chocolate shop and pâtisserie I walked by, and lost weight!! that's because we walked....everywhere. Paris is a wonderful walking city and if you take the Metro you miss out on all the wonderful sights.

Enjoy!

I'm glad you've decided to walk as your form of exericse while there. I agree you'll want to maximize your time in the City of Light and fully enjoy the French food. Who knows when you will get back there again? Six days is not a long time, and you can work out like a beast again when you get home! Enjoy your trip!
