Where to buy a dress suitable for beach wedding?

RunninTeach

Cathlete
I recently posted about my sister's upcoming beach wedding and am thinking I should try to find a dress soon since fall & winter wear is probably out already. I browsed Ann Taylor, Ann Taylor Loft, Victoria's Secret, Chadwick's, and Boston Proper but so far am not seeing anything that jumps out at me. Any recommendations for online stores where I can find a not-too-dressy, not-too-pricey beach wedding-appropriate frock? TIA for any suggestions.

Try smartbargains.com. It's Loehmann's online. They usually have cute sundresses at good prices.

Good luck!

Hi, Cathy!!!

I might suggest you try Lilly Pulitzer for a Beachy Wedding dress...I love all of her stuff! I usually buy from www.inthepinkonline.com or Lillypulitzer.com has a bunch of other sites listed too.

Enjoy the wedding! :) Denise

Cathy, I love to help people shop. Are you in your twenties? Thirties? Forties? What's your figure type? What's your coloring? Is the ceremony during the day or at night?

I 2nd J Crew!!!!!

BUT............check out Kohl's, Marshalls, and TJMaxx too! I always luck out there!

Good luck!!!!

Thanks, ladies!! I went to Macy's, Lord and Taylor, and a warehouse-type discount place near me that is sometimes good for finding dresses on-the-cheap but no dice. I also looked at SmartBargains but didn't quite find what I'm looking for. (It's a great site, though, so I've bookmarked it for future use.) The Lily Pulitzer dresses were adorable but a little bit more than I wanted to spend. So, I ordered a VS dress last night but am not sure it will work. It's that baby doll style, which can sometimes look maternity. Plus it's also jersey material, and sometimes that can be too clingy in the wrong spots. I don't love it, so I'm still looking...I will try JCrew, TJMaxx, and Marshall's next.

Nancy,
I know! You were great about finding those coasters! :) I am 33...dark brown/black hair, fair skin, blue eyes...usually size 8 (sometimes 6, sometimes 10)...a bit pear shaped I would say -- I have to watch butt/thighs when it comes to fit...it's a daytime wedding...thanks for any additional suggestions!

I really love the J. Crew dress!! :D

ETA: I checked out the colors. The one you chose is called "fresh tangerine". Some people look great in orange, but many don't. Before ordering, try on something in that color to make sure you like it on you. There is a color called "Strawberry Ice" which appears to be more of a true pinkish red, a color which generally looks great on brunettes. There is also a beautiful blue, which is the kind of color almost anyone can wear. With your blue eyes, I think if I were you I would get the blue.

Nancy,
I wanted the blue, but they don't have it in my size. I do wear orange and think it looks good, but you never know if the color on the computer screen (or in the catalog) is how it really looks in person. Generally, I go for the black & white combo (which I don't want to do for this particular event) or bright colors - blues, greens, deep reds. I do wear pinks, but I don't think it's my *best* color. My only hesitation here is that the sale is final...And I am wondering if the fabric (silk chiffon) is a mistake for a beach wedding...

Cathy, although I've never been to a beach wedding, in my opinion, chiffon is just fine. Is it a night wedding?

Just editing to say that I don't blame you for having misgivings about buying a dress without trying it on. Do you have a J Crew near you? I think you should just take a few hours and go try on dresses. It's very difficult to buy online, especially when the item can't be returned.

Cathy, I just have to chime in here and say that we must have the same body. When I read the"usually an 8 but sometimes a 6 or 10" that is so me!

Nancy, I agree--it's better to try this stuff on. I did go to my ol' standbys -- the stores where I normally can find something for these situations -- and tried on several dresses but no luck this time. So I got to thinking about some of the catalogs I used to get years ago and figured I'd give the online stores a try.

I actually wanted to avoid VS because the shipping isn't cheap and returns wind up costing you, too, but I wanted something colorful and fun and not too formal...I might have had an itchy trigger finger with that one...Ya think it looks too hooch?

I do have a JCrew not too far. I will stop in there tomorrow as it's on the way home from my tutoring job.

LD: oh yeah, I don't have too much consistency with sizes. I almost have to try *everything* on anymore...I know you used to live in PA...I'm thinkin' this might call for a trip to KOP!!! Ugh, the Schuykill. *lol*

Have you tried Banana Republic or the Gap? They have some really cute summer dresses that are probably on sale now.

Also J Jill and Isabella Bird/Territory Ahead have some very pretty, beachy kind of clothes.

Cathy, Hoochy: absolutely NOT!!! I really love that J Crew dress and think it will be perfect if it fits well. It's lovely and demure. I'm dying to know how you made out!
