When you lose, what exactly DO you lose first?????

I have lost 40 pounds so far. (Since mid July). I have hit my first plateau at 195. My FIL tells me during lunch yesterday that most of a persons beginning weight loss is all water. (Talk about bursting my bubble :( ). Has anyone heard of this before?

Great job!
Yes, some of the intial loss is water, but not all of those 40lbs pounds. Although, it is also some fat and muscle. By weight training and eating properly we try to change the ratios of how much of that is fat and muscle loss. However, you would only really know this by getting your bodyfat tested or taking your own caliper tests.

That's awesome, congratulations! Water my eye! I say don't worry about that now, you're doing something right.

In the beginning it is mostly water weight, especially on very low-calorie diets and low carb diets.

However, when I started working out again I did retain water for the first few weeks and then dropped it. So, if you are working out, which I assume you do since you are posting on this forum :) I wouldn't worry too much about your weight loss being mostly water.

In any case, unless you have some serious kidney problems there is no way you retained 40 lbs of water, we are talking about a few pounds of water weight here. I can guarantee you with 40 lbs lost, you lost at least 30 lbs to 35 lbs of fat.
Way to go, girl! You should be proud of yourself and don't let anyone "bust your bubble"!!!!

Wow! 40 lbs. in two months?!! Congratulations. May I ask what you are doing to lose?

I agree w/ the previous posters here and wouldn't be discouraged by what your FIL said. In fact, don't be surprised if - over the course of your weight loss - you get all kinds of advice and comments from "experts."

Just stick with what you are doing, and know that if you are slimming down safely, the remainder of the weight you want to lose will go slower than in the beginning. Be patient. You can bust through this plateau.

Chest! (Unfortunately!)

And when I gain, I seem to gain first in the abdominal area.

When one loses a lot of weight quickly, it's most likely that much of it is fluids (and even some muscle tissue, not something good to lose!).

Congratulations!!! I am in the same boat as you, I have hit a HUGE plateau (try 6 mos!) after losing almost 70 lbs!!! Yea, like someone else posted, the first 5 lbs or so is water, but the rest is all you, er, not anymore, anyway!!!

When I lose, it's always the chest area!!! I went from a 42C to a 36B!

Cleaned up my eating, do cardio 3 times a week and a weight w/out the other days. Rest 1 day. I do most of my lower body w/ little to no weights and lots of reps. I definitely do not eat after 5:30 p.m.. I can definitely feel the muscles, I just can't see them yet. I also know how important it is to build muscle while losing. I am 35 and don't want to lose what I am working so hard for.:)

Sure, the first few pounds are water, but not 40 lbs! LOL!!! When you first cut back on your calories, you are naturally eating less salt, so the body lets go of a few lbs of water. Maybe, at the most, the first 5 lbs. could be water. But if you keep going for several months, and you're eating properly, and you weight 40 lbs. less, that is not water weight loss at all. That is fat loss! Way to go!!! :D

ETA: I would try to slow down a bit. 40 lbs. in 2 months is a bit too rapid. From here on in, set a lower goal for yourself. Remember, the more slowly you lose the weight, the longer it stays off.

My hat goes off to you DH! I personally know how hard it is to loose that much weight. Great job and I'm sure you feel fantastic.

I agree with everyone regarding the water weight...maybe 10lbs at a maximum. I am 35 as well and have been at a plateau for the past year!!!

Don't let anyone burst that hard earned bubble!!! :D

You know, I'm sure your FIL does not mean to be a jerk, but I really hate it when people belittle real accomplishments based on nothing but hearsay (as in, "well, I heard it on Oprah that...."). 40 pounds is awesome, so congratulations!!!!

Marie

PS: Oh, yeah, it's absolutely the BOOBS that go first! LOL

Congratulations on your weight loss, and I just want to echo what the others have said. Of course, it is not all water.

I have a suspicious that how you lose depends a little bit on your body build; I have a mesomorphic build, and I always gain and lose all over.

What is it with these jerky relative?!!! They say the kids today are rude and insensitive (did I spell that right?) - and I say they learn it from their elders!

Is your FIL overweight?

Sounds like you are taking a healthy approach. I do think it's common to lose more in the beginning and then slow down thereafter. Just keep that in mind so you don't get frustrated with your progress.

Things that have helped me bust plateaus:
Increase cardio intensity and/or duration
Increase weight amount
Change up your weight workouts (keep the muscles surprised)
Zigzag calories

ETA: It has taken me 9 months to lose 24 lbs.!
