Whats the point?

Hi Gals,
Quick one for ya.
Yesterday morning I got up at 6 and ran for 30 min.The whole day I was STARVING! Today I got up with the intentions of running but I found my way back to the bed.It is almost 9a.m now and I am not one bit hungry.
So whats the point? If you get up in the wee hours of the morning,to workout on a empty belly,(the purpose being so that you can get your body moving and maybe shave some weight off)but then you eat more. Then prehaps I should just stick to working out in the evening.
Does anyone else think this? Or do I end up buring more cals working out in the morning? The other thing being, when I workout in the evening, I workout longer. In the morning I only fit a 30 min run in.
What do you think?
Lori:)

There have been arguments over the best time to exercise. While some argue that the best time to exercise in terms of getting the most bang out of your buck is in the morning before you ahve eaten much...in truth there appears to be only a very slight advantage if it exist at all. Just workout at a time that is best for you. I do not workout in the morning because I can't put in as much effort at the time...I can't lift as much, I am not as flexible and I can't go as full out on cardio as I can later in the day. In addition, I feel sick if I exercise stenuously in the AM. Therefore, my most effective time is in the evening.

Bottom line is do what works best for your body/lifestyle. What ever keeps your workouts consistent is what is best for YOU.

Now, about the appetite changes. When your appetite increases after a workout or eating breakfast or doing a workout don't think of it as a negative situation. It is just your metabolism kicking up and sending the message that your body wants fuel.
OK, so give your body adequate fuel in healthy amounts and choices. This helps support the practice of eating small meals through out the day. By doing so metabolism is at a more steady level and a higher one than it would be if a person went several hours without food, and then had a large meal.

When people report that they don't need to eat before say 1:00pm but then they can't stop eating after that, you can bet they are not 'on top of their game' in the mornings!.

* Sorry if I got OT here.

I agree with above posters Lori. I too have wanted to work out in the mornings too. Like you, I wanted to fit in a run this morning before the kids woke up. Well, it didn't happen. Number one reason is my 2 year old is a feisty little creature and won't go to bed at a decent hour. So, I am tired, I need all of the sleep I can get. I like working in the afternoons, and evenings. It works for my life. So if you can work out longer in the evenings, I say stick with that. :)

Hi Lori,

One thing to stop eating more later in the day, is to grab something before and after your workout. Doesn't have to be much just a few bites, or sips. As remember you just slept for 6 - 7 hour, and you probably didn't eat right before you went to bed, so that's at least 8 hours without food, when you wake up, now if you go running for an hour, that's 9. And then you finally sit down for breakfast. That's at least 9 hours without food, and your body is probably very mad. So yes, it will make you eat more during the day so it can save up, so it has fuel for your morning run. So you may or many not be actually losing fat. As anything after 5 hours can triger stravation mode, if you do any activity, that includes waking up at 3 am, to read a book to a young child. So do grab a little bit of protein or carbs before you head out, you'll find that you won't be so hungry during the day, even if all you do is drink some milk. That gives your body some fuel, do wait about 15 minutes, before actually running, but I know how that can cut into running time, especally if it's only 30 minutes. But the main reason why your so hungry is because you haven't had food in a while.

Also another think could be your body clock, I don't know if your a typical morning person or not. So this may or many not play into things, but certain times a day, your body clock is set to trigger your motablism to burn faster, and if you manage to exercise during this time you really burn the calories. but it really depends on yoour daily schedule as to when or where it does this.

Hope that helps,

Kit

If I do morning cardio, I make sure to eat immediately afterwards. A FULL breakfast with a lot of protein, enough carbs and some fat. This keeps my body from getting into starvation mode.

As for the time of day to work out... I do it when I have the time, although I'm at my best in the afternoon. I don't know why. My body is most awake during that time and is most ready to take anything. I'm actually hungrier in the evening, probably because I do most of my working out in the afternoon. And when I'm hungry, I eat. If I get hungry at midnight, I get out of bed and eat a small snack -- which has been the case since Hardcore came out. I figure that if my body's working harder, it deserves more fuel regardless of the time of day.

hi PINKY! i recently posted a ? about morning workouts and recieved several answers about eating a small something before i workout. it works but i still don't get as great a workout as i do in the afternoon. as for being hungry the rest of the day, try to make sure you give your body a small amount of protein shortly after you workout or try different foods to find out what it is your body is really asking for. obviously it needs something that it is not getting.

Hi Pinky,

The body clock also plays a very big role as to when we have the most enery. When you have a chance always go with your body clock. The times you seem to be most awake are usually the most benifical times to workout, but it is not always possible to workout then. There is usually 4 seperate cycles or time slots that are give you the most energy, it's a challenge to find them all. As there is two where you have a lot of energy but pain receptors are turned lower then normal, so you can either give yourself an extra little push before feeling the muscle burn. Then there are two just energy cycles, and then there is a ton of stuff in between that your body does. I hope that helps give you some info about why you have more energy in the afternoon.
