What's the Habit You're Proudest of Breaking?

We all have our bad habits...some worse than others. I was wondering how some of you have overcome bad habits and which ones they were.

For me, I have two.

1st: I am proud of breaking my 3-4 cans of sugar free red bull per day habit (which went on for almost 2 years!)!!! I started that habit in college. One turned to two cans which turned to sometimes 4 per day. In addition to being pricey it also caused me lots of headaches because of the overloading of caffeine. I am proud to say that I now limit myself to 2 per week!! I think the turning point for me was reading somewhere that too much caffeine can inhibit your body from metabolizing fat. Don't know if that is true, but it was the wake up call I needed!!! x(

2nd: Spending frivolously!!! I used to just whip out my card at any chance I got because to me, shopping was therapy. Now, I only make cash purchases (unless its something big). I give myself a certain amount of cash each week and when its gone, then I mentally know that I have reached my limit and wait until the following week before indulging again.

The habit i'm most proud of breaking is by far quitting smoking. I never thought I would be able to do it, but after 5 tries i've finally done it! I made 4 years this year. It's amazing how I can still crave it, but there's no going back now!

OHHHH, bitting my nails for sure! I used t bite em' down to nothing untill I went to school to get my esthetician license and just knew I couldn't have my nails all tore up working on clients. I'm still working on not letting the "F BOMB'S" fly so much(he,he)

Smoking! YUCK! I use to smoke sometimes 3 packs a day. JEESH!

That was 16 years ago.

For those who have quit smoking, was it a cold-turkey thing or did you have some sort of aid (i.e., gum or the patch)?

I ask because the catalyst for this original question came from my best friend's struggle to quit smoking...by far her worst habit of all.

Nice thread, Have anyone ever told you, that you look like the lovely Angela Bossast (spell check):+ :+ you do.

And you have such a lovely smile, great job cutting back on Red Bull, not good for you.

Barbara: love your pictures, is that your husband? He has pretty eyes.

Heck I can’t think of anything right now, I just woofed down 6 chocolate chip cookies. Dr pepper diet pop and had ½ bag of chips. Wait there’s more, slice of ff wheat bread with 1 chicken leg. I need a bed…………… NO CONTROL, I tell ya

The patch & zoloft. But it's still pretty hard & in all honesty I keep a stash of patches for when I go out to bars & the urge slams me all over again.

I have quit twice over the last 15 years. First time I used the patch. it works great. Second time [about 5 years ago] I smoked and smoked over a week long period until I made myself sick. I really chain smoked. then quitting was easier b/c the thought of smoking made me nausiated. Haven't wanted one since.

A friend of mine is quitting now and her doctor gave her a perscription that is working well. not sure the name though. It's the only thing that has worked for her.

Thanks Teddygirl for the compliment...how very nice of you. :) But no, I have never had that comparison before! Now...if I could only get her arms.....

Lauramax, thanks for the quick reply about zoloft and the patch. I will pass along the info to my friend. Its strange because her and I went to college together. We started smoking "socially" (isn't that how it starts?!)....and I stopped after graduation and she didn't.

Now, its been over 4 years since graduation and she is no longer just smoking socially...but over a pack a day. I have tried so hard to give advice and website links and help lines...but to no avail.

Perhaps using aids (like the pills and the patch) will help.

Thanks!!!

Smoking....I quit over 10 months ago and will never smoke again. I didn't think I'd be able to do it and I had actually quit twice before for a couple years each time. Third times the charm :) Just cold turkey......I did use quitnet website a lot in the beginning for support though. It really helped.

Smoking! Quit cold turkey last July and feel strong - being able to do Cathe's workouts keep me from smoking again!

I just wanted to give all of you who have quit smoking a big pat on the back. I've heard it's one of the hardest things to do - way to go!!! :D

Smoking for sure. I was lucky in that I sort of had an epiphany. Just suddenly thought this is disgusting and it is probably making me sick. Never smoked again. No gums, no patch just what am I doing?! Now if I could only quit p.m snacking.

Rose,

For many many years I've tried to quit smoking. Cold turkey, the patch, cold turkey, little at a time, oh did I mention cold turkey. Well that is the one that finely helped me, cold turkey and never looked backed. It was one of the hardest things to do in life. Not easy at all. A horrible struggle, but I did do it, thank God!

I quit smoking, cold turkey, 10+ years ago. It disgusts me now and I can't believe I ever smoked. I don't miss it all and I never crave cigarettes. Now, if only I could cultivate the cardio habit -- then maybe my elliptical wouldn't be covered in cobwebs:7

Oh yeah, you really DO look like Angela Basset!;)
