What to do with kohlrabi???

:) I got my harvest at the farm yesterday and I had NO IDEA what this round green thingy was. I searched for it online and learned it's kohlrabi.

Have any of you ever eaten this before, and if so, how do I prepare it?
Can I use it in a soup? I was thinking of throwing all the veggies I got yesterday into a pot for a soup. Here's what I have: 1 kohlrabi 'bulb', 1 zucchini, 3 large beets, 5 leaves or so of Swiss Chard, basil and parsley. Thinking of adding in some fresh garlic and broth for an interesting soup.

Any suggestions?

OMG. I got one at my CSA last week too. Thanks for the link. Now I have a bit of a clue what to do with it.

Thanks!

I peel 'em, slice 'em and eat 'em. Or chop them up for a salad (I have some in my salad right now!) I've never had them cooked. I've been eating them my whole life as my grandma always planted them.

Alien shaped veggies - you just gotta love them! A midwest favorite.

Eat them raw - sliced up sticks/straws and dip them in hummus or something else. Grated in salads is good too. A little goes a long way. I never liked them cooked.

I steam them for about 10 minutes, slice and sprinkle a little lemon and salt on them. They are delicious!

WOW! Who knew! :) And let me tell you....when I opened that bag yesterday I almost called the 'lady farmer' (as my boys like to call her) to ask her what this weird-looking thing was, but I was too embarrassed to do so! ;)

Thanks SO MUCH for all the suggestions! I ended up putting it in a soup, it's simmering now and smells YUMMY! I sauteed garlic, carrots, celery and onions. Tossed in the diced kohlrabi (which smells EXACTLY like cabbage, which is a FAVE of mine), diced stalks of Swiss Chard, 2 T tomato paste and spices. In a few minutes, I'll toss in the Swiss Chard leaves (cut up) and the diced zucchini.

Who's coming for dinner?????? YUMMY!

Gayle

As already mentioned slice it up and eat it raw in salads and slaws.
It's also good in casseroles that call for veggies like zuccinni.

General rule of thumb for me is if it calls for zuccinni, I'll go ahead and add it to it. Well okay I haven't tried it in zuccinni bread, but you get the idea. :p

I like the idea of using them to dip in hummus. :)

I grew up with kohlrabi and I am kind of sad that I rarely find it. I thought it's kind of a German thing.

I eat it either raw, just cut in small pieces and dip it in hummus or put it my salad.

Or I sautee it with other veggies and some olive oil, or put it in veggie soup. I love the taste and texture of it, although it's a pain in the fanny to get the skin off and get it prepared

My Grandma used to make in in some sort of cream sauce with garlic and green onions, it was YUMMY! Unfortunately no more dairy for me . I just made it with garlic and green onions and some herbs, it's good but not the same :(

We used to grow it all the time when I was a kid, but it's hard to find nowdays. I wonder why?

Just peel, slice, and eat raw. That's how I eat it.

Gayle, I've never tried them, but it looks like they are from the cabbage/turnip family (I think)? I googled it and they look like little brussel sprouts. I'm sure you can use them in a soup -- give it a try and let us all know! My mom has a wonderful garden and is always planting stuff that my husband and I eat (but not my mom and dad -- they only eat a limited amount of things). She grows cabbage and brussel sprouts, but if these look good, I'll have to tell her to try them. I'm not a great cabbage or brussel sprout fan, but my husband LOVES them both, so if this is similar in taste, let me know!!

Good luck Gayle -- keep us posted!
