My kitchen is baby-gated and apparently I failed to lift the second foot high enough this morning to clear the gate. Now I have a tiny black sausage where my pinky toe used to be! Ouch and ouch and ouch.;( Does this mean no stepping? I suppose I get to concentrate on upper body--not sure if lower body can be done. Anyone out there that's BTDT? What did you do and how long did it take to heal?

TIA

Hi Tia, I'm sure I broke my pinkie toe once. I never went to the doctor, but I'm pretty sure. It was excruiciating pain with immediate swelling and bruising. Nothing like when I just hit it on something. I actually did keep exercising, but it took several MONTHS for it to heal. It shouldn't take that long to heal, but since I didn't let it heal properly it took forever. It hurt to put my exercise shoes on, but once I got them on the toe did not hurt anymore because it was held in a stable position. I could do step, hi/lo, etc without any pain whatsoever. It actually hurt more without shoes because I didn't buddy tape to the toe next it. You really should do that as it helps with healing. My little toe even has a funny little shape now also. I really didn't have much of a choice on the doctor thing as I was in between jobs at the time and had no insurance. I really think they would have only buddy taped the toes together, however.

So, to make a long story short. You can exercise if you want the toe to take months to heal or you can lay off the cardio for a while and let it heal correctly. To be honest, I probably would do the same thing again and keep exercising. Not the right thing to do, but that's me.

I've done it 3 times

I've actually broken one of my pinky toes 3 times, and it HURTS! I am a klutz.

Anyway, in each case, I continued working out, and the pain was practically gone within a couple of weeks. Never went to the doctor, either....

RE: I've done it 3 times

When I was 16 I broke the one of the tarsals that lead to the pinky toe. Stupid me, I was practicing cheerleader jumps barefoot on concrete! Although the pain was unbearable at first, and my foot was an ugly black and blue, I was able to walk on it within a week, and I was jogging, doing aerobics and cheerleader practice within a month... Now, I think I remember my doctor telling me to stay off it longer, but I was way too antsy. I haven't had any problems, and I'm 29 years old now.
If and when you do go back to stepping, make sure you have lots of support/cushion in your shoes, and the toebox is big enough for your little pinky-toe (in case it's still swollen)
Love ya! Charlene

Thanks ladies! I still haven't been able to buddy-tape it (no tape & haven't been anywhere to get any) but I'm doing okay. I was actually able to put my shoes on do PUB. Thanks again for the input.

I broke a toe this past summer -- not the pinky, but the one next to it. I never went to the doctor, but I'm positive I broke it. I wanted it to heal as fast as possible, so I totally babied it. No stepping or running til I could step/run without pain. (I used a stationary bike while it healed.) It was 6 weeks almost to the day when all of a sudden the pain was gone. So, IMHO, either baby it to heal quick, or keep stepping and drag it out. Bummer timing with the new BB tapes! Good Luck!
:)
