What protein shake do you like?

I've never tasted one, so have no idea which ones are good. Can you give some details, such as calories, protein and sugar grams?

Thank you!
Sandra

Hi Sandra,

I usually drink whey protein, either the GNC brand or from Pro-Lab. Most of the whey drinks have between 20 and 30 grams of protein per scoop, and almost not carbs/sugar (maybe 1-4 grams). To be totally honest, none of them actually taste GOOD. There are, however, may ways to fix them up. If you mix vanilla protein with a bit of orange juice, it ends up tasting like an orange creamsicle. It is even better if you add frozen berries. If you are looking for more of a meal replacement, mix vanilla powder with skim milk, a banana and a bit of peanut butter, and it will taste like a peanut butter and banana sandwich. If you are just mixing it with milk, you might want too add a drop of vanilla extract, it makes the taste soooo much better. Any fruits or berries tend to go well with the vanilla flavoured powder. The chocolate powder goes well with milk and a banana. I tend to prefer the vanilla one. If I am going to have the protein shake with just water, I usually mix it with a very small amount of cold water so that I can gulp it down quickly and not have to endure the tast for too long. I find that most of the different brands taste somewhat similar.

Take care,

Ady

I use an inexpensive brand of whey protein called Body Fortress that I pick up at my local supermarket. They sell it in 2 pound containers for like $12.00. LOVE A BARGAIN!}( It contains 23 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar, 110 calories and 1.5 grams of fat per serving. I prefer the chocolate flavor. I use skim milk (you can use soy milk, water, whatever you prefer), a banana and a bit of natural p/b. I throw it all in a blender with a half scoop of the powder and I am a happy camper!:9 I don't even need ice in mine cause the milk makes it cold enough. Some people will freeze bananas in place of using ice but I don't need to do that either.

Are you planning to use a shake for breakfast or dinner? I dont know how I would incorporate a shake but I was thinking to try it. I want more protien to build muscle and not have to eat more cals. Thanks for the question and I like the good recommendations for things to make the taste better. I am goinig to print them out.

I use Whey Gourmet and my fave is a cup of soy milk, a scoop of powder, sliced frozen banana and a tbsp of natural peanut butter! Yum!

Jay Robb's Whey Protein Vanilla and Jay Robb's Egg White Protein Vanilla. Yum!!

They have different flavors like tropical fruit, strawberry, chocolate etc. but I prefer vanilla.

You typically can get it at health food stores, however, the cheapest I have found is www.vitaminshoppe.com.

One scoop (approx. 28 g) of the Whey Protein is 113 kcal, 0g fat, 24 g protein, 4g carbs

One scoop Egg White Protein is 110 kcal, 0g fat, 24g protein and 0g carbs

My favorite post-workout shakes are:

3/4 cup low-fat milk
3/4 cup red grape juice
1/2 to 1 cup frozen raspberries
1 scoop Protein Powder = approx. 3 Tbsp

1.25 cups blood orange juice (regular orange juice works too)
1/4 cup of kefir (or low-fat yogurt)
1 cup of frozen mixed tropical fruit (pineapple, papaya, mango)
1 scoop Protein Powder

1/2 cup soy jogurt
1 cup orange juice
2 tsp maple syrup
1 pinch kardamom
1 pinch cinnamon
1 pinch white ground pepper
1 scoop Protein Powder

1 cup mango (fresh or frozen - if fresh, add ice cubes)
2 Tbsp lime juice
1.25 cup unsweetened apple juice
2 tbsp coconut milk (unsweetened)
a little bit of fresh ginger
1 scoop Protein Powder

I use 1 sccop of Protein Powder (the scoop is supplied with the powder) but you can use more or less, if your protein requirements are different.

i like the bsn products that monica brant advertises for they have different protein shake flavors like cinnamon roll. i also like syntha 6 chocolate flavor it takes just like chocolate milk when you mix it with water.

Hi Sandra,

I use On Whey Protein by Optimum Nutrition.

Here is a recipe for one make: It is called Super Shake
1 c green tea, chilled
1 scoop of casein or whey protein
1 T ground flax seed
1/2 c frozen raspberries, blackberries, strawberries or banana
1 ground nuts
1 T greens (I use Lifes Greens)

I also make one like Shelley makes; which is really great tasting.
I've been trying to use more soy milk instead of skim milk, but read my next post, it is from an article in my local newspaper.

I also really like the BSN Lean Dessert Protein as well as the Syntha-6.

Right now I am using Pro Complete protein and the vanilla really, honest tastes like melted vanilla ice cream!!! I also like the chocolate and strawberry flavors, too!

Thank you so much for all your thoughtful and informative posts.:) You have been a huge help. I am going to print these and start shopping.

Thanks again,
Sandra

I either use Jay Rob's vanilla whey protein, or "Show me the Whey" vanillay whey protein powder which is a Wild Oats brand. I usually do 1/2 cup OJ and 1/2 cup soy milk.

I really like Elite Whey Protein by Dymatize. I get the rich chocolate. 1 scoop has 112 calories, 23 grams of protein, 1 gram of sugar and 2.5 carbs. No Aspartame. It is the first one I can drink without holding my nose!!! I actually lick the spoon!!! I mix it with 4 oz. of water and it mixes well. :9
