What landmarks would you show a guest?

I just found out another poster lives near and runs on the Bruce Trail which looks beautiful. It got me wondering...If you had someone visiting who had never been to your neck of the woods before, where would you be sure to take them. What do you consider a must see in your back yard?
We often take visitors a couple hours north of us to visit the Finger Lake Wineries. It is high on the fun scale.
As far as outdoors, we love to go to Worlds End State Park in north central PA. The Loyalsock Creek, which runs through it, is a lovely, clear, rock lined trout stream. There are short hikes to picturesque vistas.
How 'bout you. What special place would you take a friend?

Well, I'm about an hour north of the Twin Cities (in MN), so a favorite hot spot is always the Mall of America...Going north, Duluth is beautiful, too...Lots of hiking, shopping and food!!

I'm always amazed at how much there is to see and do in Ohio. It's referred to as the "Mother of Presidents" because 8 American Presidents came from here. There are several historic landmarks related to the Presidents.

No trip to the Dayton area would be complete without a visit to the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum. It's fantastic! In the summer there's the air show that attracts people from all over the country.

Of course, there's a lot of Wright Brothers related things.

The Dayton Art Institute is a world class museum. It's very surprising to me how a small place like Dayton can support it, but it's a real source of pride for the area and the travelling exhibits that stop here are amazing.

ETA great thread, Robin. Thanks for starting it. This will be helpful in planning vacations!

ETA again that there are several beautiful state parks and bike trails for outdoor fun.

I've moved around a lot, but someday I hope to get back to where I grew up, Upstate NY.

I agree with Robin that the fingerlakes are a wonderful place. I used to meet my college friends there in there in the fall to tour the wineries. It's really pretty to see pretty autumn colors ...

I grew up south of the Adirondack Mountains which are filled with beautiful lakes, hiking trails etc..

I smiled when I read this thread because DH and I are always talking about where we will "end up" when he gets out of the Navy and we always come back to NY :)!

Great thread :)!

Hey Robin
My brother loves to take guestes to the finger lakes wineries! We are in Rochester, but he is just north of Ithaca. I have always liked Lake Ontario and the Ontario beach at both Charlotte and Durand Eastman Park. High Falls has gained popularity in recent years around here. We joke around here that all out of towners need to experience Wegmans and we all bring our guests to see Danny's stores.

We live about an hour and a half from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. I LOVE to go hiking there and have taken guests there. Also we live about an hour and a half from Washington, DC so we have museums, monuments and the Capitol, etc. near us. We live about an hour from Baltimore so we also have the Inner Harbor and some museums and the aquarium too.

I love our area!

I live in the heart of the finger lakes in Central New York near Ithaca, where I grew up. Definately, the wine tours on Seneca and Cayuga lakes are a must see. Loads of fun. There are also several falls and gorges in the Ithaca area, and Cornell University is particularly interesting and beautiful. It's definately a beautiful part of the country.

I'm the poster who lives on the Niagara Escarpment, near the Bruce Trail. There is SO much near me that it's hard to choose.

I live roughly half an hour from Niagara Falls, and I'm not far from the Muskokas (check out the cottage in my Picture Trail and you'll understand what I'm talking about).

Toronto is close and is a fantastic, world-class city with TONS of stuff to do, from sports events (Raptors basketball, Leafs hockey, Blue Jays baseball), to the arts and an amazing Art Gallery and Science Centre.

Lake Ontario is about a 10 minute drive from my house.

Niagara not only has the Falls, but the whole Niagara region is well-known for its wineries and incredible food.

Oh, and in winter I'm close to decent skiing and snowboarding too:)

Y'all should come visit!

Well, I live in the Bay Area, so we'd have to do the San Francisco Tour - walk the Golden Gate, drive down Lombard Street (the curvey part), visit Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf...

Napa, Sonoma, Russian River... all of the GOOD wineries... With a stop at one of the fabulous restaurants in the area (I don't think there's a bad one there).

Then the next day - to work off the food and wine, a nice hike through Big Basin Park - where you can still see the BIG Redwoods (Berry Creek Falls trail 12 mile loop w/ 4 waterfalls), and top it off with dinner in Santa Cruz on the Wharf.

Then, if we have the time a trip to Yosemite is a must (no matter what the season). I have traveled to many wonderful places in this world and have yet to find a place a beautiful and spiritual as Yosemite.

All these places sound great, and a bunch I've never thought about visiting. Yes, lots of vacation ideas. Sometimes we give the lesser known spots a miss in our hurry to see the tourist attractions.

I live on Prince Edward Island, so the obvious answer would be Anne of Green Gables. There are so many secluded beaches that are nice to go to, I am lucky enough to haev one just behind my house and I go there every day with my dogs and there isn't another person for miles. I love to take my house guests there, especially if they have children.

DH and I have been to PEI and we loved it. It's a beautiful island and there is much to offer aside from Lucy Maude Montgomery. We stayed at lovely B&B in Charlottetown. We wandered into an art gallery there one day and brought home a landscape painting by a local artist that now hangs in our family room. I'd go back in a heartbeat!
