You know those fish bowls that have a fish in the bottom and the roots of the plant hanging in the bowl? What kind of plant is that???

I have a hanging decoration from Home Interiors in my front foyer and I can't, for the lilfe of me, keep a fish alive in it. I'm thinking that one of those plants would look awesome in it, but I have no idea what KIND of plant that is?

Anybody???

Hi Gayle,

My son made one of those eco systems for a project. We have it on our kitchen counter.

I don't think it matters what plant it is, as long as it can root in the water. I don't recall the name of that heart shaped, leafy household plant that very common, but this plant would work.

His system currently has a tomato plant, sunflower and something else. Then there's the little fish also a snail
.
This system is keeping the fish alive...although these plants will have eventually come out (I think). The plants haven't grown much in the few weeks we have had it at home.

Namita-a regular tomato plant??? Interesting.

Thanks everybody for your responses. Now I have to write those names down and head somewhere to buy it! LOL

THANKS!

yeah I read up out of curiosity too and they say to make sure to change out the water regularly and feed the beta fish food.

I bought a very large glass vase/candle holder at Target that I used for my beta and it works great! The glass is very thick and it cost about $25. Its much larger than the average beta tank. I don't have a real plant in mine though. I can't find the exact one online but this one looks similar in shape. (mine is clear glass not clouded, and I think this one is tiny not large.)

I learned through hard experience that if you decide to put a fish in yours, be sure to let the peace lily sit in the water for a few days before you introduce the fish. I don't know the science behind this, but apparently, when you first put the plant in, it sucks oxygen out of the water, which will kill the fish. After a few days, it stabilizes and the fish will be fine.

Oh, Jess, that's pretty!

My problem has been that the silly fish keeps getting stuck in the ROOTS of the plant! 3 stinkin' fish. lol And I was feeding them beta food, so that part is covered. I just need to buy a fish with brains so they don't get stuck! lol

Here's something similar to what I have:

(just one of them and it's more 'simple' than the pictured one, but I love it).
