Just thought I'd share....

Which eating category do you fall under??

I've been reading this book called "Intuitive Eating" by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. Kathryn McPee from American Idol credited this book with helping her get over bulimia. Anyway, this the best book I've ever read on nutrition and eating. It talks about stopping food obsession and learning to listen to your body. (Very much like toddlers do it). Toddlers have no issues with body image. They know when they're hungry and crave what they need.

This book talks about how this way of intiutive eating helps you learn how to reject the diet mentality. How our different eating personalities define our eating difficulties. It talks about how we can honor hunger and feel fullness.

A lot of people I know are "Careful Eaters". This book talks about how this "careful eating" can be a problem. It can become diligent and borderline miltant and when it does, it affects a healthy relationship with food and negatviely impacts your body.

I fall under the Professional Dieter category for sure! The book talks about this leading to yo-yo dieting which is very unhealthy and can lead to eating disorders.

So I'm curious!! Which category are you? (The last category/eating style is Intuitive Eating. This is what this book talks about...this is where I want to be)

Here's an excerpt from the book about eating styles:
Intuitive Eating by Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch

SUMMARY OF EATING STYLES

Careful Eater Trigger is Fitness and health. Characteristics: Appears to be the perfect eater. Yet anguishes over each food morsel and its effect on the body. On the surface, this person seems health-and-fitness oriented.

Unconscious Eater Trigger is eating while doing something else at the same time. Charcteristics: This person is often unaware that she/he is eating, or how much is being eaten. To sit down and simply eat is often viewed as a waste of time. Eating is usually paired with another activity to be productive.

There are many subtypes of unconcious Eaters:
Chaotic Unconscious Eater Triger is: Overscheduled life. Characteristics: This person’s eating style is haphazard—gulp ‘n’ go when the food is available. Seems to thrive on tension.

Refuse-Not Unconscious Eater Trigger is Presence of food. Characteristics: This person is especially vulnerable to candy jars, or food present in meetings or sitting openly on the kitchen counter.

Waste-Not Unconscious Eater Trigger is Free Food. Characteristics: This person’s eating drive is often influenced by the value of the food dollar and is susceptible to all-you-can-eat buffets and free food.

Emotional Unconscious Eater Trigger is: Uncomfortable emotions Characteristics: Stress or uncomfortable feelings trigger eating—especially when alone.

Professional Dieter Trigger is Feeling Fat. Characteristics: This person is perpetually dieting, often trying the latest Commercial diet or diet book.

This is where I want to be!!! Eat what I want, when I want!!

Intuitive Eater Trigger is Biological Hunger. Charcteristics: This person makes food choices without experiencing guilt or an ethical dilemma. Honors hunger, respects fullness, enjoys the pleasure of eating.

I fell under the Emotional Unconscious Eater. I am correcting it though.:) For the last month I have really been watching what goes in my mouth, how much and especially at what time. It's not easy, but I am doing it.:)

I'd have to say this is me, too.

I am either a Careful Eater when I have a specific fitness oriented goal and an Emotional Unconscious Eater with a little Intuitive Eater thrown in for balance. I chose Careful Eater for the poll since that is where I am right now.

I chose intuitive, only because there wasn't a "None of the above" category! The only thing that is "off" in the intuitive eater description is that I don't really get "pleasure" from eating. Yeah, I can enjoy a good meal, but I could easily live on astronaut food if that was good for you as a long term nutritional solution. I generally find the entire act of eating (food purchasing, prep, cooking, eating itself...) to be an annoying job.

I could have also sort of fit into careful eating, although it's so ominous - I pay attention to what I eat for fitness and health reasons (that's the whole point of eating!), but there certainly is no anguish involved.

m.

I'm a mix also.

I'm a careful eater, in that I worry about what I eat and how it effects my fitness performance and future health.

I'm a unconscious eater, as I'm eating my oatmeal and typing here at the same time. LOL! I'm always doing something else while eating.

I'm an intuitive eater, as I eat when hungry and usually without guilt or worries. I eat until I'm comfortable and not overly full.

edited to add as I'm laughing at myself.
I'm unconsciously eating what I carefully chose and was intuitively craveing.

Intuitive Eater 100%!!!!!!

I enjoy eating. Food to me is one of life's simple pleasures. I love pastas, cheesecakes, chocolate..... But I don't eat heavy meals 3x a day 24/7. Everything in moderation! Exercise helps to keep me trim. I'm happy with a small pooch in the abds with no food off limits than having 6pack abs eating only lettuce and bean sprouts YUCK. Hope not to offend the clean eaters. I do admire those who can do that!

I said "unconscious eater," but it's really more like CONSCIOUS eater. I am an emotional eater and am very, very aware of that. I eat constantly and try not to keep anything crappy in the house because I will eat it whether I like it or not. It just creates more and more stress. Ugh.

"Unconscious eater" just made me think of the news stories about that anti-anxiety drug (which one?) that was causing people to get up in the middle of the night and eat (like 'sleep walking' but "sleep eating': they had no idea they'd done it in the morning). Scary, huh? (And the weight gain would cause some, I would think, to have even more anxiety!)

Well it depends on the time of the day and my mood. But I definelty have been and at times I am:

Refuse, Waste, Emotional eater. I tend to fall apart at 3pm after work before workout and dinner. I have to really be careful and watch myself or I will gorge.

I am also a takeout eater. I love takeout, then I don't have to clean up.:-(

I'm careful about what I eat the majority of the time but I feel that can fall under intuitive. So I voted intuitive because I do honor biological hunger. That said, I am honestly almost always hungry and eat frequent small amounts.

I'm intuitive.
