What is it with some dog owners

I just don't get why some people get dogs and are totally irresponsible about it.

Like every morning I went to the dog park with our 4 dogs, and they always play nice, they are just happy to get the exercise and meet all of their four-legged buddies at the park.

This morning a guy comes with his two HUGE huskies (at least 90 lbs), they already go ballistic at the entrance, barking and growling at the dogs inside that came to greet them. The guy opens the door and those two giants immediately charge after my 30 lbs Mini Aussie, pin him to the ground and start biting him. The guy does nothing, just stands there and smiles. So, I run after the huskeys, pulling them off my Aussie. One of his dogs snapped at me and he still does nothing. My poor little Tuxedo ran away, hiding underneath the bench. We just got him on Saturday and he still is a little shy, trying to figure things out and the first thing that happens is two dogs attacking him.

I told the guy that he needs to control his dogs, he just smiles and totally ignores me. In the meantime I hear a lot of commotion, barking and a loud yelping, I turn around and the two dogs went on to attack my labrador and knocked him to the ground (mind you, he is 10 years old and 110 lbs).
I pulled them off again and chased them away, asking the guy again to please control his dogs. He just smiles, takes them to the other end of the park, lets them off the leash and what do you know, those monsters come charging after my second 7-month old Mini Aussie. They attacked three of my dogs in less than 5 minutes.

This really did it for me, I totally exploded, screamed at him that if he has out-of-control dogs that attack other dogs to not go to dog parks until they are socialized. He just smiles at me and then says "They didn't really attack your dogs, otherwise your dogs wouldn't be running around anymore" Really, so if I smack him in the face and he is still walking around it's not an attack either?? What a bunch of horse manure!!
To top it all off, the guy wears a bulldog t-shirt with a dog making an offensive gesture saying "damn you - busted". Well, that pretty much sums up the guys mentality.

I just can't believe how irresponsible some people are, there should be a law that people need to pass a test before they get dogs, especially that kind of dog!
My husband said I should have written down his license plate and reported him. What do you do in a situation like that?

Sorry this is so long-winded, I am just so ticked off right now, thanks for letting me vent.

Carola

WOW, there are no words to describe that guy! I can't believe he did that! I give you credit for NOT smacking him! I don't have any advice, unfortunately, but wanted to express my sympathy for what happened to you and your poor pups. :-(

I hope he doesn't come around that park much. I would hate to see you have to find another place to go all because of ONE jerk!x(

So I wonder if he would consider it attacking if it were a child the dogs went after? What a complete a$$hole!
I am sorry that happened to you. I agree with your DH, to get his plate if he comes back and it happens again.
I am about speechless at how ignorant and down right rude people can be.

Oh, I'm sooo sorry! That guy is a total jerk and should not have dogs in the first place!! Don't even get me started on that one.

Huskies are normally friendly dogs and we have several very well behaved ones at our dog park, including one huge malamute who has to weight 130 pounds, but is just as sweet as can be. But, there's no excuse for that kind of behavior. The sad thing is that his dogs will attack someone else's dogs who will then turn around and sue the park for damages causing the dog park to close. So, because he's an a$$, we all suffer.

Another thing you can do is call the park (most are city owned) and let them know what happened. The parks all have rules and a person cannot bring an aggressive dog to the park. They may keep a close eye on that park for a while.

Carola, I'm so sorry you had this experience. There's no excuse for that kind of irresponsible pet owner. Unfortunately, I don't think there's much you can do about it. That's the risk you run when you go to a dog park.

Is this a public or private dog park? Are there any rules and regulations posted? Is there someone on staff and in attendance at the park? There's a private dog park in my area that is supervised at all times. Maybe you could find something like that.

I worked for a vet for several years and one of the reasons I quit was because there were a lot of nice dogs with crappy owners. People often wear blinders when it comes to their own pets, too, and tend to underestimate how aggressive they can be.

One thing that drives me up the wall is people who use electronic fences and include the front yard within the boundary lines. My neighbor did this and their dog goes crazy evey time somebody walks by. It can be frightening, especially for moms and kids. My mailman and the UPS guy will not deliver packages to my door if the neighbor's dog is out because she appears aggressive, even though she's a sweetheart.

I wish there was some sort of test you had to pass before you could have a dog. ;(

Wow, scary! If that guy is at the park again, call the regular police number, not 911, and ask to speak to animal control. Might help.

From what I am hearing and reading, dogs (or should I say irresponsible owners?!) are becoming a huge public problem, not just with their endless barking, but with aggressive behavior that is left unchecked. As Cesar Milan points out, too many people mistake their dogs for people.

On a sort of related note, more and more landlords are refusing to allow dogs on their property because there's this crazy trend going on wherein the landlord is legally responsible for any bites that occur on his/her property, even if it's a visitor's dog! For that reason we have "no dogs, not even visitor's dogs" built into our leases. Too bad. :(

Oh, Carola, I am so sorry!!! I had something like that happen to my dog when we joined the park. She was attacked by an Aussie, has two scars on her leg and one on her ear from it, and I reported her to the park office right away. This woman told me it was the first time her dog did it and blahblahblah, but I didn't take any chances... do you have that as an option? I would get it in writing with whoever owns the park and I would definitely write down this guy's plate if you see him again. Owners like this give certain "aggresive" breeds, like dobies, pits, rotties, shepherds, a bad rap. I TOTALLY AGREE THAT THERE SHOULD BE A TEST BEFORE YOU GET A DOG!!! Can you imagine what this guy's neighbors have to put up with? UGH!
You did the right thing by confronting him, hopefully enough people will say something to him and about him and get him kicked out.
((((((((((((((((HUGS!))))))))))))))))))) I know how your dogs must be feeling, and you too!!!

OMG .. that ticks me off ..

.. I have two HUGE dogs .. French Mastiffs .. they are socialized . but due to their size I would NEVER take them off their leads .. that is just plain out old irresponsible!!

My babies would never hurt a flea ... but they are curious .. and their size alone would hurt a smaller dog or child if they were to bump into them .. or scratch them .. PLUS I worry about other dogs jumping on them .. and leaving them to defend themselves ..

there are no words for that jerk ..

we don't really have dog parks here .. but when we travel there are always designated areas for pets .. my babies are always on lead .. and we are always VERY careful to watch other dogs and their owners .. b/c you never know ..

Maybe he won't come back .. but if he did I would gather my dogs up and get his liscence and file a complaint tom the park .. then if nothing is done .. file a complain w/animal control ..

Poor thing .. {{{ hugs to you and your babies }}}

.. side note: it is not the dogs fault .. but the JERK and that @$$ of an owner's fault!!

I rarely go to dog parks and when I do I'm a stress nut about watching before we go and what dogs are coming as we are in. If I see anything that I don't like we either don't go in or leash up right away and leave. I won't risk it.

I also would let Tuxedo get used to his new environment before taking him out with dogs that you do not know. Give him some time to adjust first.

It sucks that people bring aggressive dogs to dog parks. I am very proactive at the dog park. I'd rather leave than risk an attack or bad situation.

Colleen

Did you report him? Surely someone RUNS the dog park (the county or someone) and requires dog be in control?

God, I'd be so pissed! I think you showed tremendous restraint. I would have kicked his ***!!!

Marie

PS: Hope the doggies are ok. :(

Words can't describe the pure anger I'm feeling at this stupid bastard! Unfortunately there too many idiots like him, which is why I NEVER take my dog out without taking a stun baton with a heavy end for clubbing and a very sharp knife in the handle. I hate to feel like I need this, and I would never want to have to hurt another dog, but I would do whatever I had to do to save my dog and myself. I wish I could get my hands on that son of a #$%^&!

You shoulda slapped him. Obviously he don't care bout nothin. Maybe if you DID slap him he would still just smile:p :p. What an A**

oh my god, i am so sorry (and angry) about what happened to you and your dogs. If i were you, I'd report this guy to the police- if i were that angry, i'd probably have that guys face burned into my memory!! his dogs are clearly too aggressive to be around other dogs, and because he is that irresponsible they can be taken away from him.
i have two dogs, both rottweiler mixes of different sorts- 50 lbs and 95 lbs. they do pretty well with most people and some animals- i would never take them to a dog park (of course, we don't have those here, so it's not even an option) unless i kept them on leash the whole time!!! the big one, in particular, could probably hurt a smaller dog simply by virtue of his size and weight, and it would kill me if another dog was hurt :(.
unfortunately, some people are just not fit to own dogs.

OMG, what a freggin jerk!

I am sorry to sound silly here, but where I live we don't have dog parks unless the dogs are leashed, so my question is I take it the dogs are not required to be on a leash while they are in the park?
I personally feel that should not be allowed, nothing against the dogs, it is just obvious there are bad owners like that guy and innocent animals can get hurt.

Hopefully you won't run into him again at the park.

My dog got in a fight with a dog my neighbor was watching last Friday. My neighbor was so appoligetic about it because she knows my dog is my little girl. She is 60lbs which isn't that little but you get my point.;-) My dog is 6 and the Golden retriever which was soooo nice to me is 8, both female. I told her I am kind of glad it happened because my dog Boomer thinks she dominates everywhere. Boomer gave Brandy a bloody lip. All she got was some chipped nails(time for a pedicure). I do not take my dog out around men for the same reason that jerk shouldn't take his dogs anywhere it sounds.

When other dogs don't get a long with Boomer I let their owners know it is because their dog is jealous of how pretty Boomer and her beautiful green eyes are!!!

I'd take a camera/camera phone next time you go (I'd go without your dogs and try to get pictures of them attacking other dogs:)), so you can get some evidence if it happens again. Hopefully he was a one time visitor. Obviously his dogs don't get out and socialize much.

Hopefully this incidence won't scare your dogs from going to the park again.:-(

Yes most states have off leash dog parks which are usually fenced in so dogs can romp and play off leash. The downside is that altho they usually have "rules posted", no one is there to enforce them.

If I go, I am very proactive. If I even think there might be an issue, I leash my dogs up and go home. When I saw that man with his dog, I would not have given his dogs an opportunity to hurt my dogs.

It can be a great opportunity for dogs to get exercise, meet other dogs, etc. You just have to be very careful of how you do it and when you do it.

Thanks to everyone that responded, I got some really great ideas.

I was just not used to such aggressive dogs and a jerk owner at that park.
I have been taking my dogs there almost every morning for the past year. It's mostly the same dogs that are there, and they all play nicely. I am not saying that the playing can't get rough at times, but they are never aggressive where I'd be worried about my dog.

I don't get bent out of shape over dogs playing rough. What I get bent out of shape over are irresponsible dog owners that seem to take joy in other animals being attacked and hurt by their bully dogs!

It's sounds good to be proactive and I agreee that you have to be proactive but I didn't even get a chance to take my dogs out of the dog park fast enough. I was only half-way to the gate when the guy let his dogs in and they immediately chased after Tuxedo. While I was taking care of Tuxedo, I was yelling at the guy to constrain his dogs and they attacked my other dog. Then I thought he was leaving but instead he took them off the leash standing by the gate, where they went after my other Mini Aussie. I just don't think I had any way out, the whole thing was less than 5 minutes. And the more I think about it, the more I think the guy really did it on purpose.

We went to the park again today and someone there told me that the same thing happened at another dog park a few days ago with two huskies. This guy may just be going around causing trouble.

Anyway, the dog park visit went great today and Tuxedo was happy running around and playing.

Thanks again for all your kind word (and the not so kind ones :) ), you just made my day and you are right, I should have smacked him! Have a wonderful day everyone!

Carola

That just has me fuming. I don't know what I would have done if that had happen to me. He sounds like he's wanting to see what his dogs will do, since he is not trying to stop them. One of these days, one of the dogs that his picks on is going to be agressive inreturn and all h-ll is going to break loose. NOt only will the dogs get injured, but someone is going to get serious hurt trying to break them up. How can people be like that? One of my aussie is dog agressive at home, so I would never chance taking her to a dog park. The other one is very submissive so when I take her, I have to watch her constantly to make sure she doesn't get picked on.

Check with your city and see what laws or ordinances they have for agressive dogs. Many cities now have specific laws (ever since that horrible dog attack on the San Francisco woman several years ago). If your city has such an ordinance then I would find out how they want it reported. Do they want you need to call animal control when it is happening, do they want you to turn in a video of it, etc? It's sounds like he is just out to get his thrills and doesn't care of the consequences. Unfortunately it is almost impossible to stop someone like this, that is, until he gets hit with a lawsuit for his dogs injurying a dog or person.

Good luck. Hope your babies and you stay safe. If your dog park only has 1 entrance/exit, I would recommend that you suggest to the park ownwer or city, that they put in a second exit that can be used as an exit only, thus allowing for an escape should a dog or owner get out of control.

WOOHOO! I'm glad!!! It's tough when you get those kind of jerks ruining the fun for everyone! I'm glad it worked out today and hopefully that guy will not be back.
