What is average?

Here's my question, keeping in mind the vast range of fitness levels represented on this forum. But I just want to know where I stand.

When I used to run, I could do a 5k in about 30-35 minutes. This, I was led to believe, was a decent time, and farily "average" for a woman at my age a fitness level (33 at the time I was running, I'm 35 now).

So, what is the "average" amount of weight a decently fit woman in her mid-30s should be able to handle in a typical - haha, yes, I know - Cathe video?

Even though I think I'm doing pretty well, I look at some of these exercises in the videos and think, "Boy, am I really not fit enough if I can't do THAT?" For example, in the Tricep/Biceps S&H tape, there's some ab work at the end where the women go into this amazing oblique work where they lift both legs out to the side, and I thought, "Gosh, am I SUPPOSE to be able to do that?"

Anyway, enough said, interested in hearing your opinions. Of course, I understand that we all have individual differences in our fitness goals and abilities, but I thought it might be an interesting discussion.

I go from zero weight (Power hour lunges, doing all reps now) to 62 pound bar (dead lifts in Slow and Heavy) with an 8-pound dumbbell or pair being one I most often use. I do use my 25-pounders once in a while for back work. It depends very much on how many reps I expect to do.

I guess if everybody chimes in you could do some math and come up with an average! Ask again in a year, after lots of people read BodyRx, and you'll probably see some higher numbers!

Don't think there is anyway you are going to get a clear answer on this one. I have pretty weak abs I think and have a hard time doing those moves as well. I also don't think I could run a 5K in 30-35. So, sounds like you are above average!! Body types will make this impossible to figure..

Hello Susan,

For me there is really no average because I am always trying to go the next step above what I am can do. I have seen women who are twice my age (I am 30) who are fitter than I am, can lift more weights, run more miles etc. For example, I used to think that I will NEVER be able to do extended press ups, that I am of the 'average on your knees/girly press ups type'. Now, however, I can do them.

It takes time to improve on your 'average' and you can. You just have to be patient. Keep trying for those oblique and one day you will get there.
