What if you've been working out HARD and find out you've been pregnant??

I'm concerned b/c I'm off the pill. Even though we're taking other precautions for a while, you never know. I'm still working out at my normal level...doing Bootcamp, Legs & Glutes, IMAX 2, PLB, etc. My heartrate gets really elevated even though I feel fine. So let's say I do this for 2 months and then find out I've been pregnant the entire time. Would I have done harm to the baby? Have any of you done that and had things turn out fine? Do you just need to slow down once you're in the second trimester? Thank you!

I had a surprise pregnancy a couple of years ago and was working out very intensely at the time, so this was a big concern of mine. I found out that I was pregnant when I was about 5 1/2 weeks along. I worried that I had harmed my baby by exercising so hard and long, but she turned out fine - full-term and healthy. I listened to my body and cut back in the first trimester due to fatigue and nausea, but continued exercising right until delivery.

If you do get pregnant, it's very important to make sure that you stay hydrated, don't go anaerobic and rest when your body feels tired.

Take care!

Thanks Erica,

That's what I was worried about. Sometimes (when doing interval cardio, for example), I do go anaerobic. I'm glad to know that you didn't do harm. It makes me feel better.

Hi,
I knew I was pregnant but was told listen to your body. I did imax2 pregnant and didn't start modifying til about my 4th month. My daughter is healthy but certainly likes to be moving, wonder why? LOL

Hi Steph,

This happened to me - I nearly missed all of my first trimester...and to think I was wondering why I wasn't feeling any fitter!

I taught classes almost up to the end and did go anaerobic at times - as soon as I knew, I just pulled back about until I was working out at a comfortable level.

I was really concerned about my high level of activity and actually got in touch with Jim Clapp who wrote the gold standard book "Exercising Thru your Pregrancy" - he was very helpful and gave me a few other tips to measure intensity which weren't in his book. His email addy is at the end of his book.

His major line was that "if it feels good then it's probably OK"

Good luck

Thanks guys! I appreciate all the great advice. I will definitely get that book (when the time comes ;-) )
