At my current fitness level, I usually use a 6" step, but there are some videos where I use an 8" such as BodyFusion, and LowMax. There are few others that I am getting ready to move up on. What about you all?
For most Cathe workouts, I've gone down to 6", though the last time I did IMAX2, I did it on 8" for the first time. Some workouts, like IMAX3, I do on 4" the first time out, just to get the feel of it.
For other instructors, or earlier Cathe workouts, I usually use 8". (And for some older Firm "step" moves, 10").
I generally do the same as Cathe. On her older videos I used 8" and on the newer ones I do 6". Except I do Rhythmic Step and Imax 2 on 8". Okay, it just depends! When I'm learning a new workout I always start on 6".
I'm with Dani, although I think I beat her by like .25"- I'll take it!!!
I was tripping doing Low Max yesterday- couldn't tell if it was my complete lack of coordination or whether I was tired, or short. Maybe a combo of all three?
Since meeting Cathe and crew on the roadtrip and seeing how tiny they all are, I've set my step to 8" for everything. I figure I'm 2-4 inches taller than they are so I should buck up and work as hard as they do! Now that I've gotten used to the higher step, it's not so bad. Besides, I burn lots more calories on the higher step. If your knees can take it, go for it.
I've been stepping for many years and always use an 8" step. It took me awhile to figure out why I struggled with interval 5 of Imax 2 until I finally realized Cathe & Crew were on a 6" step. Now I lower my step for that interval only and then go back to 8" for the remainder. Fortunately for me I have never had any knee problems.
I have always used an 8 inch step for all of Cathe's videos. When I have tried to use a 6inch my heartrate just isn't high enough. I am 5'8 so I think that makes a difference. I have never had any knee problems so that is also a factor.
When I first started step, I wanted the highest step I could get. Does anyone remember those days (I felt like I should throw a rope up for the climb--okay, a bit of a stretch--hmmm, was that a pun?)? It was too high though, so then I actually decreased to an 8 inch height ( I'm 5'9"). A few years back, I pulled my calf muscle so I reduced my height to 6" and I was stuck there for awhile. Now I am back to stepping at an 8" height.
I remember learning that when stepping you should lift your leg no higher than a 90 degree angle to accomodate stepping onto the step. In fact, sometimes when people use a step that is too high they will resort to bouncing their landings to keep the pace, which actually can lead to strained calf muscles. Guess who's guilty? Me, me...
Anyone else hear that?
I was wondering the same thing the other day.I always set mine at 8" and I don't even think about it.SO does this mean that we are getting a harder workout then Cathe? I think Rhonda is the only one who sets hers at 8".I assume it is b/c she is so tall

Mine is at 8" unless there are a lot of jumps onto the step - like in the IMax's. Although I did Circuit Max and the last segment has jumps and I did pretty well on an 8", so I'm thinking of trying all but IMax 3 on an 8". I am just not brave enough for that. And I'm 5'10, so like the other Amazons out there *wink* I get more of a challenge that way.
I used to always use an 8" step until I came across Cathe workouts. Then I decided to do as she does for whatever workout I was using. Rcently, I decided to use 8" for RS too as someone else mentioned. I'll have to try it on Imax2 as well.
With my cranky knees, 4" is enough. But there are segments in Cathe's older workouts where I can use 6". I can do RS and LM on 6" but have to modify the "torque-y" moves.
Mostly I do 6 inches. Occasionally 8 if I'm feeling extra energetic. I err on the side of caution so I can concentrate on form and intensity and not tripping. If I know the routine inside & out then I might take the plunge. I'm only 5'4" so 8 inches is a tad stretching it for me.
I think I read somewhere that Rhonda's about 5'6". I could be mistaken, but I don't think she's super tall. I think it's because the rest of the crew is 5' to 5'2" and that just make Rhonda look tall.
