What happened to these kids ????????????

I took my 12 year old to his 7th grade orientation. 90% of these 12 year olds boys and girls were taller than me. The girls chests were my size when I was a senior. The school goes from 7th to 9th grade. Today only the 7th graders were there. The school also said that you can't participate in any sports other than P.E. until you are in the 9th. My son is great at basketball. When did the schools add 9th to junior high? The boys were bigger than my husband who is 5'4" and weighs about a buck ten.

I haven't researched this. but I think a lot of it has to do with the steroids that are injected into cattle for beef processing. They don't go away when the meat is processed. I've noticed that too in recent years, and I think I need to do more research on it. Rather frightening.

You're not the only one who has noticed this. My husband has recently been treating teenagers that at first glance, appear to be in their 20's! I'm sure their diet has a lot to do with their size as well and this includes dairy as well.

The kids continue to hit puberty at earlier and earlier ages as well. Many girls as young as 9 or 10 are getting their periods. Not sure why though.

I must say though that your husband seems like a rather tiny guy. Five four and 110 pounds is pretty lightweight for a grown man and may not be a good basis for comparison.

I've also heard it is the hormones in milk.

My son is going into 8th grade; last year at the spring concert, when the ***5th*** graders got up, I nearly died! The girls looked like they were about 17 and were dressed accordingly. And this is a private school; you would think parents who are putting that kind of money into education would also be a LITTLE concerned about what their kids were wearing. One girl nearly broke her ankle prancing about in three-inch CLEAR heels. It was really horrifying, I will tell you, and I am generally pretty laid back about that sort of thing.

As far as the chest size on the girls. I don't think that is unusual at all to have the same chest size as a senior. I'm 42 now and was an early developer. My sister who is 4 years younger than I has almost no chest, never has. I went straight from nothing to a C cup. I hated it, especially since I was very tiny every where else. I'm only 5 feet tall and weighed probably only 80-90 pounds in middle school. A C-cup on my tiny frame looked huge. I have 2 boys and to me they, and their friends, all developed normally. He has friend who is very very tall and has always been taller than the other kids, but his parents are tall.

As far as 9th grade being in middle school. I've never heard of that, but our school is broken down a little strange also. There are 4 different campuses instead of 3, elementary (K-4), intermediate (5-6), middle (7-8), and high school (9-12). I've also never heard of no sports until 9th grade. Do ya'll not have a football/basketball teams for 7th and 8th grade?

When I was growing up Jr. High was 7th-9th grade and High School was 10th-12th. When we moved I went into a middle school system and it was 6th-8th with High School being 9th-12th, it all depends on what system of break down they are using. It is nothing unusual for 7th to 9th to be together I actually think it is better in my opinion.

As far as tallness, my 13 year old son has a almost 12 (still 11) year old friend who is 5 ft 9 and I am 5ft 7 and I have to look up to this kid. I have to constantly remind myself that he is 'only 11'. Maturity wise he is only 11 but he towers over my 11 year old boy who doesn't even stand 5 ft tall yet. Gotta be something in the water, eh?!? I think one of the other posters is right especially with girls it is all the hormones that are given to cattle these days. I know some moms are actually feeding their daughters only organic meats to prevent them from developing early.

I only have boys myself and they are developing at a "normal" rate.

First of all I would have never of thought of factoring meat into it. Is that why I was running around in 8th and 9th grade wearing that shirt w/ the Wendy's slogan on it saying:"Where's the beef?" LOL
My husband seems like an average height, but he is pretty skinny. I was just floored by the height of these kids. I was talking to one mom and she said, "The taller more developed kids were given more milk and fed better than the smaller ones".

The school principal told me that no there were no sports offered until 9th grade. When I was growing up it was k-6 elementary, 7-8 junior high and 9-12 high school.

I think when it comes to the chest of these young girls, you only have to look in the bra deparment. All bras designed for teenagers (and below) are padded and pushed. My dd is 12, and she wears a B cup, but looks larger, but I can't find a decent bra that covers her, and is comfortable that does not make her look more pronounced. My dd is also 5'5, but as I am 5'10 and I was 5'7 in 7th grade, well, I think she's short. LOL (She laughs nervously when I say that - I'm kind of short for my family).

Now, considering that, we live in the Bay Area and she is one of the few blondes in her class. The kids who have not had a life time advantage of the American diet rich in milk and red meat, tend to be much smaller, slimmer (no dd is not fat - she's just not skinny - she has a cute figure) and less developed. I seriously think there is something to be said for both genetics and the possibility that perhaps all of the growth hormones and other stuff we put into our food supply ought to be studied a little more thoroughly.

My DH is Indian - from India. When we visit over there, well, I'm 5'10 and blond. I stick out like a sore thumb. What's interesting is that the Indian kids who were raised in the US are much taller than the ones raised in India (4 to 5" taller). Diet certainly has something to do with it.

My friend who teaches pre-school has noticed really tall kids even there, they are all under 4 years old generally 2-3 years old, and she's 4 foot 7, there are a few there that are only an inch or two shorter then she is. Now those are some tall 3 year olds, it's funny, as the parents still want her to hold the child and carry it around if it's upset. Hmm how many of us, could carry around some one an inch or two shorter then us, like a small child, without throwing out their back? She doesn't workout so it's really not possible for her to even try. Some of the babies that come in that are under 18 months already weigh 30 pound +. I know we are supposed to get taller naturally but I do think the hormones in meat has made us get taller faster. If you look at the other countries that generally don't eat beef, you'll notice kids that aren't that tall.

As for as 9th being part of Jr. High, it was turning that way, the last year of high school, where I lived. But even then they still had sports for all the grades in jr. high.

But yes, this goes back to what I was complaining about a couple weeks ago, I'm only 4' 10” and I was running into get another bra at wal-marts as my strap broke and had a meeting to go to. Because I'm under a 36 C, I was sent to the kids' section. As my 34 B was now put over there.

But I do agree steroids do make you develop early, the ones they gave me for my neck to keep my spinal cord from swelling and doing damage to itself, gave me pre-teen breasts at about age of 9.

But then again, the kids that were raised up on farms etc, back in the 50s were also much bigger then there city counterparts. So maybe it's just having fresh beef easily available? There was a study done on that, about 15 years ago, in one of the medical journals. As I really didn't believe my father when he told me the farm boys were always bigger and stronger then the city kids, he grew up on a farm, and worked and ate off the farm every day. But he was right at least according to this study, and his year book. And I know his grandfather didn't give their cows anything other then grass, unless it was pregnant, then it got special treatment. But he'd never pay for steroids, he considered them a waste of money, as a cow will get fat with grass, it's senseless to pay extra to make them fat.

It may just be better nutrition, over all, too. My DD is pretty tall for her genetic background (well, MY side, anyway), but we only eat meat about once a week, if that, and she doesn't drink a lot of milk (she's more of a water girl). I know she eats better, nutritionally speaking, than a lot of kids her age, so maybe they make up for it with the hormones...

Every generation has been getting taller and bigger than the last, so it's not really that surprising, at least to me. Then again, talk to me when DD starts high school. I may be a little more concerned when she starts wearing make up and looking 20 ;-)

>My husband seems like an average height, but he is pretty

Did you mistype in your first post? 5'4" is short for a man. I'd say 5'8 is around average. 6'is tall.

Are you shorter than your husband?

Maybe one reason these kids seem so tall is that you are both short?

Consumption of animals products does factor in, as milk contains hormones even without them being added (it is, after all, designed to help baby calves grow quickly). Nowadays, hormones and other growth stimulants are given to animals, which gets into the meat and milk. There have been cases of very young girls (5 years old) developping breasts in areas where there were too many hormones in the milk.

Kathryn,
I am 5'3" and my husband is 5'4". The Dr. always tells us that we are average heights. I was going by what the Dr. said.

When I was in grammar school, the schools in my town were very "traditional": k-6 / 7&8 / 9-12

When I got into middle school (7th grade) they made a change and put 8th grade in the high school and 7th grade in the grammar schools so my class was the last in the middle school. We were headed to the high school the following year and the middle school was being shut down.

After that they even changed the grammar schools set up. There used to be 3 grammar schools are going from k-6. Today it is something like k-2 in one school, 3-5 in another school and 6-7 in the 3rd school.

As far as the kids looking much older and being bigger, I have definately noticed it over the years though I never knew why except for the way the girls dress now-a-days that makes them look 20-something. Heck, some of these teenage girls wear outfits that I wouldn't even wear as an ADULT!

Here a junior high school is a school that goes from 7th grade to 9th grade. A middle school is a school that goes from 6 to 8th grades. Junior high schools are a thing of the past around here. They decided years ago that 6th graders belonged in a school where they were away from the k thru 5th graders for purposes of development I suppose.
As for the steroid issue, I am flabbergasted at what people will believe. And the media is partly to blame because they give outright false info or bad info usually because of some agenda where some group is making money off of it. And then people believe it lock stock and barrel without doing a little research of their own.
Go to any legitimate non profit organization that studies such matters and you will see that steroids cannot exist in milk for any period of time and no sound study has ever linked milk to early development in kids. Steroids in beef----same thing. Once again, remember that the beef you buy IS THE FINAL PRODUCT of the steroids that were put into the animal. The beef is not injected and what is in the beef are actually the breakdown products from the steroids. And they are in minute amounts. If you care to not eat those items then that is fine since it's a free country but don't let the whole steroid non-issue be the deciding factor.
Food in this country is more abundant and nutritious, as is the child care in and out of the womb. This is why people are growing bigger and maturing earlier. In girls' cases I believe many dress more provocatively as well, which exacerbates our perceptions that they are more mature.
This health hype we are bombarded with really steams me. People waste money on stuff such as "organic foods", and other items, and it's completely unnecessary. My neighbors are having money troubles and they still go out and pay 30 percent more for organic foods, and they are getting nothing back for it. No legit study has ever proven that they are more healthy, taste better, or are better for the environment. It's amazing how easy it is to talk and BS people out of their money in this country. It ticks me off.
Sorry for the ramble.

My eleven year old daughter is 5 ft 7, weighs 118 lbs and wears a size 11 in shoes. As soon as she was born she grew a lot, as a three month old baby, she wore 12 month old clothes. So it cannot be the meat/milk, it's genetics. I am 5 ft 10 and she might outgrow me but I stopped growing lengthwise as I was about 14.

I always thought Americans are very short, about all of the teachers we had so far are way shorter than my daughter. Britain's population is short too compared to other European countries. I believe Americans are finally catching up and has nothing to do with what we eat - most girls in this country don't even get enough milk.

my daughter turns 14 next week. just got her period for the first time. She's wee, 4'11" and 89lbs. (then again, I'm 5'2 and her father is 5'6). One of my sons is 5'5 and another 5'10. Same gene pool, same diets. Go figure!

Kids are just bigger these days. I remember making the same observation when my son started middle and high school. The girls all made me look tiny, and I am 5'7", 115 lbs. Not only that, the boys are just TALL! My own DS (who is 18 now) is 6'1".... his dad is 5'6" and as stated above, I am 5'7". Who would've thought we'd have such a tall child?? His height is a constant source of amazement in our household! :D

Heather, I believe 5-4 is average for women, 5-10 is average for men, so your husband is on the small side and I would expect most Jr High girls to be taller.

My son loves red meat, drinks a lot of milk, and when he entered HS, he was 5 foot and 75 pounds. As a Senior he is 6 ft and 150 pounds and still does not shave. My daughter is 12 and is 5-1 95 pounds and is probably and A cup and started her period this summer, just like I did some 30 years ago. She does not eat meat or milk as she dislikes both.

Personally I think it is more about genetics than hormones in meat and milk. My son looks like his Dad, and so does my daughter. He has always been small and a little late in developing. When there are big kids at school, look at the parents, they are probably big too.
