What happened to clementines?

I remember when the clementines first came out and they were so juicy and sweet and yummy and easy to peel.

Now it seems their just as nasty as the rest of the fruit at the grocery store - hard, difficult to peel, no flavor, and expensive as he11! Sometimes they even have seeds.

Sigh. Another great idea ruined by whatever it is in the universe that ruins good ideas...

Maybe you've been getting bad batches of them? I dunno - the clementines I've been having are AWESOME - sweet and juicy and easy to peel as ever. And no seeds so far. I have 2 clementines every day - love them! :9

What brand do you buy? Maybe it's the brand, or where you're living you can get them cloer-to-ripe than we can?

I live in MD. I forget the brand that is sold at the local Giant grocery store near our house.

I think they're called "Cuties", and I get them at Kroger in Central Illinois. They're $5.99 a box on sale, although I think I paid $6.99 last time (no sale).

ETA - yup, they're Cuties. Here's the website. I guess they're grown in California. So maybe try looking for California ones?

I think you may have gotten a bad batch. I got one bad batch and they were hard to peel but no seeds and were still sweet. All the rest were easy to peel. Hopefully, the next batch you get will be better. :)

Maybe you should try a different grocery store.

Susan, 2 years ago I discovered clementines and thought they were awesome. So, last year I was so excited when they were in season. I think that my first box was great, but after that I didn't have a good box the rest of the winter. I actually stopped buying them. They were chewy and had no taste. It makes me gag to think about it actually. Anyway, I was going to give them another try this year. I hope that they get better!

I've gotten two little crates of them so far this year, and they've been yummy! I put them in a bowl on my desk and let co-workers have some. I've met quite a few new people because of those things; people go crazy when they see them! I love that when I peel one, my whole office smells citrusy!!!!

Funny, I just bought a batch the other day and they are not as sweet as I have had in the past. They also don't last very long, do they?? Well, they look pretty in my fruit bowl, so that's a plus, right?

Depends on your part of the country. 2(?) years ago only the northeast could have imported clementines because of medfly.

I have never been lucky with clementines, the ones that I bought always had seeds - YUCK! I am buying Satsuma mandarines instead, I bought a big box at Trader Joe's for $ 6.99, just munching one, they are YUMMY!!! Easy to peel and no seeds.

I saw them in the grocery store today (Publix - Atlanta, GA.) and they were $8.99 a box. I love them, but I don't think so!!!!

I too got some at an ATL Publix. The first weeks batch was small and juicy and the next time they were large and a little tough with a few seeds.

Question for JeanneMarie, do you by chance work for a local airline to go nameless? It is a small world. Just curious because of the name and you live in Atlanta.

No Christie, I don't work for an airline. I live north of Atlanta on Lake Lanier. You must know someone that works for an airline with my name?
