What good things have you done?

Ok, I was watching Opra yesterday, and she made me think of some of the good things that I have done in my life. the best feeling that I've ever had is doing the Walk for Diabetes and raising over $1200 for the cause. I always give all of my change to the bell ringers of the Salvation army. And I always donate to the March of dimes.
What kind of good things have you done in your life? Maybe you will inspire some of us to do more good things.

I'm a social worker (actually a stay at home mom of two right now) and I'm very proud of the work I've done. I worked in foster care right out of grad school...and while I didn't really like the job (I swear it's the hardest job on the earth) I found it quite rewarding helping the children and families overcome such crazy hurdles and difficulties in their lives.

But I have to say I'm most proud of the work I did with people suffering with HIV/AIDS. This was my most recent job and it brought me such joy, personal satisfaction, and pride in what I was contributing to my community. My most fond memory is working with a woman who was an addict and getting her into treatment and clean for the first time in a very long time. She began to do such great things for herself and for others in the treatment center. She unfortunately passed away while there, but I know deep in my heart that she was so grateful to have passed on clean, sober, and making a lasting mark in others lives. That makes me feel so good inside knowing I helped get her to that place in her life before she died, and that she died with people surrounding her that cared about her and loved her instead of dying out on the streets all alone.

Good topic!

I too always drop money to the Salvation Army during the holidays. I did the American Heart Walk for about 4 years in a row. I try to do something nice - whether it's just holding a door for someone or a please and thank you - everyday. I'd like to do the Susan G Koman Breast Cancer walk here in St Louis this year and also be involved in a reading program for kids.

A while back I learned while raising money for the Lukemia And Lymphoma Society that a contribution in any amount makes a difference. From then on out I never say no to a charity when soliciting donations. I know that even if it's just $1.00, when added to all the other $1.00 donations, it adds up.

I am so fortunate to live in a country where there are countless opportunities for me to take advantage of and where I live in luxury compared to so many other people. I cannot, in good conscience, walk by, shut the door or hang the phone up on someone who is trying to gather money to help those less fortunate than I am. Being so busy raising my family and working I have no free time to give so that is the very least I can do.

Hi Kathy,

This is a good topic. I remember seeing a show once where Oprah had the girl on who sings, "What have you done today to make you fell proud..." I think the name of the song is Proud from Biggest Loser.

Anyway, I always think of that song and try to do **something** every day. I have little ones, so volunteering my time isn't always possible. However, when it comes to my kid's schools I try to be up there for everything that I can (reading, computers, paint mom, etc.).

A few years back I found that our town has an Adopt-a-Family program at Christmas time. That is always fun to do and an Easter basket program.

Me and the kids will frequently put a bag together of things that they no longer fit into, play with, etc. and give to goodwill.

I also try to make monetary donations whenever possible.

What a wonderful topic! And we have some fabulous ladies here, don't we? Wow - it just makes me feel good.

My list ... 100 mile bike ride for the American Lung Association (raised $550). 100 mile bike ride for the Leader Dog for the Blind Program (no donation - flat fee). March of Dimes walk (raised $350). Member of the Santa Clara Country Search and Rescue Team as well as the California Rescue Dog Association. Assisted on several searches. Volunteered with the Red Cross for Hurricane Katrina aid - helped run a Shelter for 10 days - one of the most incredible 10 days of my life).

Seriously though, the only ones I really count are the Red Cross and the Search and Rescue. The others were more for fun.

I often donate to St. Judes Childrens Research Hospital...I heard a telethon on the radio a several years ago and it had me in tears. I went home and called to pledge $50.00 and have been donating ever since...

DH and I do volunteer work with and donate money to the historical preservation society in this area. We do Treats for Troops. We also make a regular donation of food to the food bank. Recently did a "Bowl for the Cure" breast cancer fund-raiser.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow - what a ride!’ — Peter Sage

Well, recently a very young girl with 3 very young children was trying to raise money by having a yard sale. Her boyfriend was diagnosed with brain cancer and had very little time to live. I gave her a car seat, baby swing, tons of baby clothes. I wanted to give her a check for $1000, but I would have been murdered by my husband!!

I have to add this, my dh and I were getting gas. An elderly man was looking pretty confused as he was checking his oil. Dh went over and tried to help him by checking his oil and engine. He can be so sweet!

I give my kid's clothes/toys away to friends or people who need them.

I donate platelets at the Red Cross every other Week which takes about 2 hours with a needle in each arm, I get to watch a movie and the nurses are sooo nice. And when my beloved Lab died last year I began donating money every month to the ASPCA since I'm not quite ready to rescue another one.

Here's another good quote...

"Live your life so that your children can tell their children that you not only stood for something wonderful - you acted on it"

I have this one on my wall and it's kind of like my creedo.

DH and I do volunteer work for Salvation Army and the Hemophelia Association. We are also very active with the ALS association. We become active when DH was diagnosed with ALS 4 years ago. His Grandfather had ALS as well and unfortunately passed away from it when DH was still quite young.
